Hey, was I right or was I right? Driver is a driving game
But the point is the N64 couldn't handle them. They're just the genre I'm into -------------------

What are you talking about? The N64 had dozens of racing/driving games.
And what do you mean the N64 couldn't handle them? You do know that the N64 is more powerful then the PS1, right? I was assuming that you already knew that obvious fact. -------------------

Back to the thread topic for a moment. I can understand the argument that Mario is a dying franchise seeing that some feel it hit its peak on the SNES or N64 (and popular culture in the 90s), but when you're the most popular videogame mascot of all time, with every new game still selling better than almost every other franchise out, do periodic lulls really make that much of a difference? Even the crappiest Mario games (ahem, Sunshine, ahem) are still rated higher than the high majority of platformers out there.
So OK, maybe Mario is not as popular as he used to be, but is he dying? No, I think just the fact that Mario Galaxy is being released solidifies the argument that he is not. ------------------- "Eastmost penninsula is the secret."

re: Is Mario a dying franchise? |
quote Ville_ValoDDR:MM was a spin-off. When people refer to actual Mario games, they refer to the major platformer titles that feature Mario himself in his regular form. Games such as Super Mario Bros, Super Mario 64, and Super Mario Galaxy are considered the core games of the Mario franchise and referred to as the Mario games. Games like Mario Tennis and DDR are, again, just spinoffs. They aren't even developed by the same people, so you can't compare their success to the core franchise's success.

quote GogetenksRighty-o. If we considered every game that featured Mario as a playable character, we'd have to argue over whether SM64, Super Smash Bros Melee, or Mario Kart 64 was the best Mario game, hehe ------------------- "Eastmost penninsula is the secret."

They are spin offs, not the core games. Once the core games die, the franchise dies. Failed spin offs don't affect the franchise nearly as much.
quote Ville_ValoYou know what a publisher does? They fund a game and such. They don't develop anything. They don't actually make the game. Any flaws in a game like Mario Power Tennis might not be in Super Mario Galaxy because these are totally different people. Publishers are there for financial support. The package the game and do all the stuff like that. Developers actually work on the game itself. You can't blame Nintendo's development teams and people like Shigeru Miyamoto for a game that Camelot developed. As long as the core franchise, the major platformers, are around and strong, so is the entire franchise as a whole. None of the franchises he is in currently in charge of and working on right now have lost quality or are below superb(arguably, Star Fox has, but as far as we know, they aren't working on one at the moment). Mario is still strong, regardless of the unimportant spin offs like DDR: Mario Mix or Mario Power Tennis designed by other companies nobody cares about.

Nintendo gets a slice of the earnings, Nintendo authorizes the game. There are too many Mario spin-offs, and Nintendo likes it that way.

I jonathin Mcdowel of [link name=Nintendo][/link] agree we will barely support this game and will return to regular old mario with koopas, goombas and bowser not futuristic robotic wanabees. We will return to the old ways and are already planing to make Mario Superstar Saga Advanced Generation consisting the first ever mario games and 5 new (not including Galaxy).
TY for your post. [link name=Dahboss@hotmail.com][/link]

Mario is a Living Franchise! |

I own NES, SNES, N64, GCN, WII, PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, Dreamcast, GB, GBC, GBA, NDS, and PSP, so I can compare all of the mascots.
Mario is not getting worse. Mario is getting better. The reviews do the talking. Look at the older reviews for the older Mario games, and then look at the new ones for the newer Mario games. Super Mario Sunshine is... BY FAR... the BEST Mario game. All those who don't like it, only assume it is bad, because they judge too quickly, after reading the story line and such. The truth is, everything works perfectly. It might be a little odd here and there, but at the very end, it has extreme innovation. Nothing beats the music and the graphics. Crash Bandicoot is not a copy of Mario. Same with Sonic. They are both very different. I see Crash when I play Crash, not Mario. I see Sonic when I play Sonic, not Mario. This isn't always the case. When I play Starfox Adventures, I see Zelda, not Fox. The Mario franchise is still the top. With over 193 million games being sold, it will never die. Until Mario gets worse than games like... "Aquaman" "Annoying Stick" "E.T. for Atari 2600" It is going to be around. Mario games are the best. And that's a fact! Also, Nintendo has the best racing games in the world. Nothing beats Mario Kart. Grand Tourismo and Need for Speed, although good games, do not beat Mario Kart. Firstly, there are no weapons in Grand Tourismo and Need for Speed, so they get very boring, very fast. Secondly, Mario Kart is much more innovating, and much more fun. Realistic games are not always better. If I judged games on how realistic they looked, I might as well play real sports, and race real cars. I might as well play real chess, and not video game chess. You can't play real Tetriss, or real Bust-a-Move, but you an play real Checkers. So I find games, that you can play in real life, very pointless. Games should be limited. Too many people play too many video games. The markets are flooded with Sports games and racing games. There should only be one of each Sports game, per console. So much repetition. Mario strives away from all of that. You cannot play Mario games in real life. But damn those sports games. 50% of the video game market is practically made up of only sports games. We only need one of each sports game. Apparently, these are the new upcomming football games: NFL 2008 NFL 2009 NFL 2010 NFL 2011 NFL 2012 NFL 2013 NFL 2008 DX NFL 2009 DX NFL 2010 DX NFL 2011 DX NFL 2012 DX NFL 2013 DX NFL: Special Anniversary Edition Extreme Football Extreme Football 2 Extreme Football 3 Extreme Football 4 Extreme Football: The Super Bowl Mario Football Sonic Football Crash Bandicoot Football Namco Football Football Football Evolution Football Evolution 2 Football: Rise of the Under Takers Football Madness Let's Play Football Big Boy's Football Alien Football Charlie Brown Football Pointless game of Football Virtual Football Football Legacy: Attack of Defense Football Shadows: The Wrath of Russia Football National American Football Football Sports Amazing Football Good Football This is a Football Video game Football of the Year Football: White Box Edition Backstreet Football And Finally... Interviews with Football Heroes: Football Palace 2014 Special Anniversary Black Box Edition: Summet of the Undertakers Reunion Super Bowl Melee Championships All of the games will be available on Xbox, Xbox 360, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Nintendo Gamecube, Nintendo Wii, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, and Playstation Portable.
