No, the gravity and physics usage, shooting through space and the ability to control the environment aspects alone make it less similar to SM64 than Sunshine was, and that game had FLUDD. Other than it being Mario, it really isn't nearly identical, although the same core gameplay appears to be there.

i didn't really like mario sunshine all that much. well i just got it a few weeks ago and played it for a while then got bored. and the fact that i got a wii recently and zelda certainly isn't helping the fact that i don't play it.

well I think Sunshine was one of the best Mario games. I guess it just depends on what you like.

I, actually, am not sure if it will be better. From what I've seen so far, it doesn't look that amazing. The space theme doesn't appeal to me that much. I liked Super Mario Sunshine more than Super Mario 64. I found it much more fun for some reason. But I guess it's all a matter of opinions.
And this game looks more like Super Mario Sunshine than Super Mario 64 to me. ------------------- | |
