After level 10, you only gain 3 hp. This is for warriors. 2 hp for rogues and 1 hp for mages.

^ correct; thats why your supposed to earn HP quick as possible;
try and max out rolls before level 10; or if HP is vital for you (its not really vital for anyone if your a good player) try a barbarian!

Agree my Half Orc Barb was a machine. I could just leave him to take them on and concentrate on other members of the party.

this is part of the d&d rules
in BG2 at least you don't have to reload every single time your character gets a bad hp roll. that game designer mustve liked to see people get killed often ------------------- RPG maker resources -_- selling games role playing game name generator

So what exactly does consitution do then? I have a mage and oddly enough his constitution is as high as his intelligence.

I believe that a high constitution increases the likeliness of countering diseases, poisons and such.
This is the Wiki Description for The 3rd D&D edition on Constitution, so I'm assuming the effects of having a high constitution are somewhat influenced by what's written below: quote Wikipedia on Constitution in D&DSo it's not that bad to have a high constitution on a mage, perhaps it'll stop you from being disrupted all the time. I always found my mages with high constitution to have higher hit points, although I have noticed no real change in their ability to fight off the effects of enemies hitting them. In fact, my current mage has a problem with being distracted every single time he is touched, so I usually end up having to keep him at the rear.

If you read the description carefully it says it increases the amount of hit points among all the other stuff.

The amount of initial hitpoints, yeah. The increases for mages seems to be across the board the same afterwards, though -- my mage has high hitpoints but he still moves upwards with hp slowly.

Well that doesn't fit that description so maybe Baldur's Gate is running on a slightly edited version of the rules.
