Chrissy (my neighbour) has asked me for a fossil and I have tried sending it in mail, droping it next to her and putting it in my inventory and talking to her but she doesnt notice. how am I supposed to give it to her?

Did she ask for it on the day that you found it? And did she ask for a FOSSIL, or a checked fossil ie. bones?

Your villager probably wants an identified fossil. They shouldn't care what kind as long as Blathers identified it.
