Pokemon Starters?

Right now I'm really focusing on Treecko, Ralts, and Wingull. I catch almost every new one I see, but I figure instead of raising like Zigzagoon I'll wait and get a geodude, then a fire pokemon of some sort, that way I'll cover all bases. Any tips?
