Hmm, I would try to update the Direct X, I have heard of this before, but never figured out the problem. Try some of the menu stuff.

I just have a question: how do you do a drive-by shooting? I read on an FAQ that you can do it in the PS2 version. How do you do it on the PC?

Whilst driving, look left or right (by pressing 1 or 2 on the number pad, I think), and then just shoot with the left mouse button.

Could someone please help me out. Here is my problem, the game runs ungodly slow. If I'm going in a stair line, its fine but as soon as I turn, the FPS drops to practically 1. I have the resolution set to the lowest setting.

Okay, I'm running:
Athlon XP 1800
Randeon 8500 64MB
512 MB DDR RAM

Definitely above spec. And GTA3 ran fine in Windows 98, but now that I'm running XP the game stutters and hiccups. I know, big surprise, but I`ve noticed somehting interesting. It only happens when I enter a new area. If I turn around a go through the area again, its smooth as buttah.

So I don`t think its a rendering problem, more like a disk access or caching problem. I have a 40GB 7200 rpm hard drive and yes, I have defragged it. I have a 1024 MB fixed swap file. I`ve tried it on C: and D: (where the game resides) and it doesn`t seem to make any difference.

I`ve scoured Take 2`s support area (very informative, BTW), and tried EVERYTHING they suggest for improving performance, but nothing helps.

I also just bought Soul Reaver 2, and it seems to have a similar problem, though its not as obtrusive. Does anybody out there know anything about disk caching and... well, stuff like that?

Well, here goes. I just got the game. My computer is fairly outdated. It's on Windows ME. When i shove GTA3 in and start to play, everything goes fine until the opening video starts to play. Then some time before i actually get to anywhere i can control, the screen freezes up, but the music continues to play. Then when i press any key, it closes GTA and takes me back to my desktop. i have no idea whether my graphics card is outdated or not (i don't even know if i have a graphics card, my PC is as it was two years ago) and i can't seem to find out what kind i have. Oh, and my PC isn't connected to the internet (though it will be soon). I'm on my dad's PC. So, anyone able to help me?

Edit: i've now learnt that the game is clashing with a system file known as kernel32.dll. As it's a system file i can't delete it. Anyone know what to do?

i have played gta 3 loads before but now when i try to play he just wont stop walking backwards. i have had this problem on other games as well like Conflict desert storm 2. plz help

Does it do that when your not playing a game as well? If it is, then maybe try getting a new keyboard. Also, be sure that your keys arn't sticky, my friend's brother got jelly under the shift key and it sticks from time to time.

Its nothing to do with the keyboard, because it doesnt happen with other games such as half life. might it be direct x 9 . that is all i can think of.

Im also Missing a file.img.uha it worked once but now it won't let me install it anymore,maybe i'll just get the New GTA,cause Vice City runs like a Champ on my POS computer,

miskec hey you could try updating your Drivers for your video card,if that doesnt help,i had a problem like that in a game and needed a New Video card so just to make sure i used a different video card and started the Game up and it worked ....
