re: **General In Game Problem Thread |

I found out what really happens is we are getting an little box that pops up behind GTA3, the box says:
"Unhandled Exception: c0000005 At Adress: 00000000" Maybe this will help solve our problems.... I tried playing with the slider bar for hardware acceleration under the troubleshooting tab of the display adapter. This let me play the first mission, and I thought it was fixed, but I just ended up having the same problem, just slightly later in the game. Then after that it started freezing at the same point it did before. *sigh* I tried everything and this is really starting to annoy me.

quote chaosegoTry reinstalling the Direct X version that comes on the Install CD. If you look at the Install CD, you'll see a folder labeled Direct X Runtime. Inside that folder are Direct X installation programs. Choose the appropriate one for your operating system and run it to install Direct X 8.1.

I have the same problem...I drive around and after a while the frame is freezed for 5-10 seconds then you hear a bit of scratching in your sound. Then it just has a "grainy" hum then after a while it says "Error reading the Grand Theft Auto III DVD". I simply hit Alt+Tab then go back in. It usually happens in a vehicle, the game works a lot better when I am on foot. I can do this 10-20 times before it slows down so much that I have to reboot the computer, I can barely get through missions. I have only just passed "Under Surveillance" on Staunton Island and I got the game in the mail the day after it came out, it takes half a day to complete one mission!
Arrrggghhh I hope Rockstar comes out with a patch or something!

This is common in Windows 2000/Windows XP when the person playing the game is logged in as a different user than the person who installed the game. Grand Theft Auto III saves the users settings and saved games in the My Documents folder under GTA3 User Files, so if a different user is logged on the game can't see these files. Logging on as the same user who installed the game will usually correct this issue.
