Depends what you mean by free play. Can you still hop around to the different Planets? Yes, but there really isn't much of a point. Besides grinding through respawning enemies there really isn't anything left to do in the game. On a side note you can't actually Planet hop once you've visited the Unknown World and the Star Forge.
