For me, it would be the first. While the latter definitely had some defining qualities, along with some perks that this game did not, the sense of completion and the massive undertaking set upon your character, along with the plot, is much more impressive in the first one. I recommend that if you play anything, you play this one first, and then move onto the second one when you are ready to.

I concur.
While Kotor II had some good features that I still come back to now and again, it lacked any real substance. The plot was watery and a disgrace when compared to the first, which, lets face it, had one of the best plots that I've ever seen in a Game, (equal to Aidyn Chronicles for N64).
In the second game you really have no strong idea of WHY you're doing things.
Also It was too easy. The damage in the second game goes upso high that it's just ridiculous. I once saw a single master power attack hit do over 300pts of damage. Even Malak on the Star Forge does no more than 60 at best. This msy seems a small point but when you consider that the amount of damage you can do goes up so high, little things like grenades become pointless. It really changes how the game is played.
Also, FP and VP get so high, and recharge faster so that your character basically becomes a God.
AND, difficulty flip flops. Anyone who has finished the game knows what Im talking about. You can wade through a sea of your enemies blood in the level leading up to the end fight, without so much as breaking a sweat and then the very last Bad "Guy" stomps on your head uless you use tactics that are very much like cheating.

To make a long story short (too late, I know)
The second game lacks the luster that makes the the first game a much more fulfilling and satisfying experience.

Would of been awesome if KOTOR 2 had Reven in it as well.

Well... RevAn does make a cameo appearance in the Darkside cave on Korriban. And Revan is also talked about a great deal especially by Kreia

In fact, the entire plot of your character, along with most of the story, is based on the history of Revan, from both the Mandalorian and Jedi Civil war eras.

Well Revan is not a set character in the first game, you can make "him" male or female, light or dark. So there would be 4 different Revans. (male light, female light, male dark, female dark)

What Mishtram said about the plot being based around his history, it depends on what you answer when Atton asks you about Revan, whether he was male, female, light or dark. Depending on what you pick, it stays throughout the game and appears in dialog that way. So in order for Revan to appear the creators would have had to make 4 different ones(listed at the end of the first paragraph) It would be weird to describe Revan as a dark sided female and talk about "her" all the time with Kreia and then see a light sided male Revan in cutscenses.

I'd go with the first Kotor because it was by Bioware and those guys are awesome. (yes i do succumb to fanboy-ism but only when it comes to certain game developers... like Bioware or Atlus)

PARABLE IS BACK YAY. I say Kotor as it is the only one i have played haha.

Well, KOTOR II lets you customize more, and gives more options. However, it does have an insanely long trial planet....

i would deffinately say that the first KOTOR was better than the second because of the story line, the story is amazing and very in depth, while the second seemed pointless at countless times. the main improvement of the second would be the workbench but other than that give me the first kotor any time
