Ignore the adventure and it's true Gunpey. |

I think the key to enjoying Gunpey DS is to concentrate on the core game, which is a subtly improved version of the original game.
http://sourceforge.jp/projects/oswan/ If you use this program, (and can get past configuring the wonderswan's keyboard layout), then you can play the original versions of Gunpey. The rules were a) no break , and b)Only swap tiles, rather than move tiles around singly. The DS version, when played in "endless", can be played happily with the stylus (which gets infuriatingly turned off on adventure), across two screens, which the player taps a button to switch between. It is this juggling between two fields of play that qualifies this game for classic status in my mind. Playing the original Wonderswan version will make you realise that underneath the cartoon characters for kids (present in the original colour version), there is a masterpiece of brain workout. Inexplicably, in addition, Q saw fit to include a music sequencer which alone makes this truly idiosyncratic release a must get for anyone with some headphones on a long journey. If anything Gunpey tells us that Q are genuinely interested in games if, when courted by Disney, they continue to produce a homage to an obscure Japanese puzzle created by a genius. 8-10 | |
