FFXII: Revenant Wings flies to DS
Weekly Famitsu dishes out the details on Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings; producer says DS game is not a sequel, is aimed at new audience.

The PlayStation 2 title Final Fantasy XII, released in Japan this past March, has already shipped over 2.4 million units. With numbers like those, it's no surprise that Square is cooking up a follow-up to the latest in the spin-off-happy franchise, as is reported in this week's Weekly Famitsu. What's more, the new game, titled Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, will be released on Japan's current reigning console, the Nintendo DS.

Famitsu revealed the game would focus on the characters Vaan, age 18, and Penelo, age 17. The DS's stylus and touch screen will be utilized, but the article did not reveal how. However, in an extensive interview with Motomu Toriyama, the game's director and scenario writer, and coproducer Eisuke Yokoyama, some tidbits of the game's creation were revealed.

"The reason we chose the DS was that we had many opportunities to see up close people playing it," Toriyama explained. "We planned to target the game at people who haven't touched games until now. The concept we developed was that of making an 'entry level FF' title."

As a result the game will apparently feature revised gameplay. "We removed anything that would look complicated [to a new player], and built the battle system with an eye towards users who were playing the game for the first time."

Although inheriting the FFXII title, Yokoyama downplayed its link to its PS2 predecessor. "It is not accurate to call this a sequel. We want people to view it as the latest FF game. This is not FFXII-2."

This is not the first time the company has made an "entry-level" Final Fantasy game. In 1992 it published Final Fantasy Mystic Quest for the Super Nintendo, a simpler, less complex spin-off of the series.

Here's some information from IGN:

Following last week's surprise announcement through Jump Magazine, we've at last gotten a few solid details on Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings thanks to the latest issue of Famitsu. As we detailed in our initial report last week, this spin-off of the latest numbered FF game is being developed for the DS.

Revenant Wings tells the story of Vaan and Panelo, two of the main characters from FFXII. Vaan is 18 years old in the game, and has just fulfilled his dream of getting his own plane. He keeps himself free of politics and family life and travels the skies as an air pirate. The 17-year-old Panelo serves as his navigator.

The game's director is Motome Torishima, who previously served as event planner on Final Fantasy VII, event director for Final Fantasy X and director for FFX-2. He's also working as director on Final Fantasy XIII for the PS3, so he's got some strong ties to the FF series. Serving as co-producer is Eisuke Yokoyama, the assistant producer on Dragon Quest VIII.

Torishima explained to the magazine the reason for putting this spin-off on the DS. Apparently, Torishima and his staff had taken note of a common scene throughout Japan: people playing the DS. They began to consider ideas for games designed for people who aren't into games. That's when the idea of a "My First Final Fantasy" came up.

To make a game suitable for inexperienced gamers, Torishima and crew planned to make something that uses the touch pen for control. They also decided to get rid of overly complicated elements from the battle system. While Torishima wouldn't provide specifics, he said we can expect a system that will allow you to defeat your enemies with minimal controls.

In addition to this vague promise regarding the battle system, we know just one detail on Revenant Wings. Flight will be a central part of the game. You'll be able to take to an air ship and travel through the land from the very start of the game, Torishima said.

Yokoyama and Torishima's details on the storyline were equally vague. The time frame of Revenant Wings in relation to the main FFXII story isn't important, explained Torishima, adding that the game's timeframe is merely an era when Vaan and Panelo were air pirates. The story of XII was, he admitted, that of Vaan and Panelo getting caught up in a storyline that was already taking place with Ashe and the other characters. In Revenant Wings, Vaan has the main character role all to himself.

Yokoyama added that the game isn't a sequel to FFXII. It's not, for instance, FFXII-2.

Famitsu doesn't have any screenshots of Revenant Wings, meaning we'll probably have to wait a bit for specifics on how the game will play. The Tokyo Game Show should provide for our first glimpse of the game, though, as Square Enix will be showcasing a trailer. Stay tuned for more details shortly.

Final Fantasy XII Battle Details
Get the first word on the Revenant Wings battle system.
by Anoop Gantayat
December 11, 2006 - Square Enix has been shy on details and screens for Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, one of its big Tokyo Game Show surprises. At long last, the silence has come to an end. Thanks to the latest issue of Famitsu, we have a few additional gameplay and story details.

As originally reported, Revenant Wings focuses on the further adventures of Vaan and Panelo. Following the events of FFXII, Vaan has grown some, and is working as an air pirate. Panelo is Vaan's girlfriend, and also serves as his navigator.

Revenant Wings takes place in Remless, a large island chain that floats above FFXII's Ivalice. The Eagle race of winged Hume creatures reside in this world within a world. These creatures have short lives of around 40 years. So far, we know of one particular Eagle, a young soldier named Llyud who ends up meeting Vaan and Panelo.

In addition to these story details, Famitsu also provides first details on the game's battle system. The battle system looks like it has some real time strategy elements to it. Vaan and his party -- the Famitsu screenshots show up to three allies -- face off against enemies directly on a 2D map. Your party members automatically attack their nearest enemy. It's up to you to tell the characters where to go and select a target if you wish. You also use the stylus to draw the area of attack for magic attacks.

Based on the screenshots in Famitsu, Revenant Wings looks like it's completely 2D, with lots of sprites, effects and color. The screens also make references to a "Gambit" system, suggesting FFXII's artificial intelligence system will make it over.

We weren't able to see any shots of the game's dual screen support, but director Motome Toriyama provided a few hints. The second screen will be used to help display data, which can't all fit on a single screen. You'll be able to switch the two screens between top and bottom.

Revenant Wings is still being flagged with a TBA release date. But with a new trailer expected to debut at next week's Jump Festa in Tokyo, we expect the Japanese release to not be too far off.
