Relation to FFXII

Many people have been wondering what is this games relation to Final Fantasy XII and will it be a Prequel, a Sequel or what.

Well Yokoyama has removed all doubt:

----- ----- ----- ----- -----

"The reason we chose the DS was that we had many opportunities to see up close people playing it," Toriyama explained. "We planned to target the game at people who haven't touched games until now. The concept we developed was that of making an 'entry level FF' title."

As a result the game will apparently feature revised gameplay. "We removed anything that would look complicated [to a new player], and built the battle system with an eye towards users who were playing the game for the first time."

Although inheriting the FFXII title, Yokoyama downplayed its link to its PS2 predecessor. "It is not accurate to call this a sequel. We want people to view it as the latest FF game. This is not FFXII-2."

This is not the first time the company has made an "entry-level" Final Fantasy game. In 1992 it published Final Fantasy Mystic Quest for the Super Nintendo, a simpler, less complex spin-off of the series.

It seems that they have tried to make this game seperate from FFXII, now wether the story has to do with the Dalmascan Empire or one of the other empires only time will tell.

re: Relation to FFXII

Seems like they learned from their mistake (that's what i call it) from FF X-2 and are making games with the same number but no relation to each other's story at all. This is most eveident in the FF XIII trilogy (agito's on a cell phone. Darn you SE). This looks like (from the characters in the trailer) to be before FF XII, becuase they look younger. Or it could be that this is an alternate story to FF XII, and they couldn't (can't) get that much character detail on the DS, becuase it is a portable. Hopefully, making this game simplar won't diminish the overall quality of the game.

re: Relation to FFXII

They do look younger but it may just be because the DS isn't capable of showing the incredible graphics from the PS2 version + the long gameplay that we have come to know and love from Final Fatnasy games.

re: Relation to FFXII

If wikipedia is right, then this takes place after FF XII. It says that Ashe in FF XII is 19, and that Vaan is younger, meaning that he is either 17 or 18 (guessing here). In FF XII Revenant wings, it says he is 18 and

Spoilers
quote
He is an 18-year-old pirate with his own airship with Penolo as his 17-year-old navigator. In the FF XII page, is says at the end he finally gets a small one man airship.
It doesn't give the ages for the characters (at least Vaan and Penelo) so we can't make the comparison for sure.

Edit: NVM, it looks like the ages are on the Final Fantasy Neo Portal. So this is a year after FF XII.

re: Relation to FFXII

Believe me when I say don't trust Wiki, at this point all fans are just getting any old rumours that they hear and putting it on Wiki and most of it wont turn out to be true. For example this game does NOT have Ashe. Go to the official site you will see that only two of the 6 characters are known the other 4 look completely new (from their outlines)

re: Relation to FFXII

No, i was just using her as a comparison to Vaa's age. She is in XII, and she is 19, older than Vaan, meaning he would probably be 18. I don't remember reading or saying that she was in Revenant Wings. I was using that to say that RW was after XII, but don't need to anymore becuase i found the ages of the characters in XII.

re: Relation to FFXII

Well I'm deffinitely glad it's not a direct sequel, though to be honest I actually quite enjoy the more complex battle systems employed in most ff games, as it can be quite satisfying when you finally master it.

I believe that this game will return the normal turn-based battle system and get rid of the Gambit system (which to me is nothing more than a drawback to it being on the DS).

re: Relation to FFXII

I carry my ds like everywhere with me so it'll be nice having another handheld ff game(ff3 will be the other one). But I am a bit worried they'll simplify it too much.

re: Relation to FFXII

So that means that possibly this game could go back and have random battles again? It would make it simplar for the player and seem less intimidating for first time FF gamers.

re: Relation to FFXII

Well I don't think random battles really make it simplier just different, ffxiii may (I hope) have random battles again. I've never ever liked enemies appearing on the map.

re: Relation to FFXII

Well, the battle system in FF XII may seem a little intimidating to people new to the series. I prefer random battles anyway.

re: Relation to FFXII

I personally prefer FFXII's battlesystem, so much easier and it also means that we don't have to press attack again and again and again as you do in other games.

I personally hate *gasps* the DS, my cousin had it and it didn't really interest me, I preferred the PSP myself so I very much doubt I'll be getting this game, but I'd still like to know all the details on this game so I know what I'm missing out on.

re: Relation to FFXII

I'm the opposite I bought a psp and ds but feel the psp was a total waste of money, while the ds has an ever increasing library of good games, what does the psp have? The only game I spent any long amount of time playing on my psp was metal gear acid, while the ds has castlevania( 2nd only to the amazing symphony of the night) new super amrio bros, mario kart ds, advance wars 2 sonic rush etc.

Sorry for the rant but I just don't see what the psp has games ways that makes it anywhere enar par with the ds at the moment and with this game +ff3 on the way the ds will have even more of an edge.

Funny how they mentioned it wasnot like FFX-2.

I need to get a DS still and this is just another reason to get one. Hope to hear much more about this game.
