Advice and GOTY edition advice

Sorry if this has been asked 1000 times.

I am thinking of getting Oblivion after watching my friend play it on the 360. GTA IV is too boring to be my in depth game this year so i figure Oblivion could be the one.

However i keep reading that the GOTY version is bugged because of something to do with being unable to complete a vampire mission and staying a vampire. Is this true? Would i be better off getting the original?

Also can i ask

1) Are there lots of glitches in the game?

2) The combat system looks quite basic, does it get repetitive and tedious?

The stuff you can do in the game looks amazing, i just want an in depth game that does not get repeitive, is this the one?

re: Advice and GOTY edition advice

Well, the two major bugs are: obviously not being able to cure being a vampire. Although, my advice is not to become a vampire anyway, the bonuses are out weighed by the negatives. Imo. The other drawback being items dissapear from chests if they are "over repaired". That means if you are an expert of armorer, you can repair items to 125 health making them more effective. The easiest way to combat this, is to spread your items around your house, or simply drop them. However, I think the dissapearing items glitch only occurs with Shivering Isles items, but i'm not sure.

The GoTY contains Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine, but be advised, you can not currently download the dlc such as battle thorn castle etc.

Combat is deeper than it looks I think. Tbh, you won't really notice it whilst playing.

Any other questions, or you need something explaining better, feel free to PM me

re: Advice and GOTY edition advice

Thanks for your swift reply

How easy is it not to become a vampire? I mean are there vampires that try and bite your or is it completely your own choice?

I know there are 100's of hours of stuff to do but do you think it becomes repetitive or do you think it keeps itself intriguing. I gave up on GTA IV because the missions where the same and there was not much else to inspire me.

So you can only download the new content on the original version?

Cheers

re: Advice and GOTY edition advice

You can't download the new content on the PS3 at all. I would say, the guilds, Shivering Isles and Side Quests are much more fun than the main quest, but the main quest is still pretty good and varied. When fighting a vampire, you get infected with a disease called Porphyric Haemophillia, like any other disease, you can use a cure disease spell, or go the nearest church and activate the altar and everything will be fine. You can only use altars if your fame is higher than your infamy. You get fame from the main quests by doing it the good way and infamy from thieves and Dark Brotherhood quests.

re: Advice and GOTY edition advice

Ok so you can cure being a vampire, or is what you mentioned about spells and altars only how you do it on the original version?

Looks like i will definately get this game, the only decision is which version.

The only thing which i didn't like on the 360 when i saw it was the crazy distance you can jump, moon jumping i have heard it called but that is a minor thing.

re: Advice and GOTY edition advice

Vampirism is odd. When fighting vampires, you will sometimes get infected with the disease Porphyric Haemophillia. Now that drains your fatigue. Leave it for three days without curing it, and you turn into a vampire. Now being a vampire is curable, but you need to go on a quest to do it. That quest is uncompletable on the GoTY due to a bug. But is completable on the normal one.

As mentioned before, you can cure disease by praying at an altar in a chapel, or using a cure disease spell.

Jumping is controlled by acrobatics skill, the higher it is the further you jump. If you don't want to jump miles, don't jump much.

re: Advice and GOTY edition advice

I get it now, i will have to borrow my mates original copy if he still has it.

I just swapped GTA IV for the GOTY edition, the guy in game said it is said by many to be the best game ever so i am more excited now.

I will start playing soon.

One last question, how far down the game is this vampire mission?

Thanks for all your help

Well its an optional side quest so you can do it whenever you want, you can only trigger it if you become a vampire.

re: Advice and GOTY edition advice

Just to clear and clarify a few things, there are several ways to become a vampire

  • Fight one and you may be lucky enough to contract the disease
  • There is a side quest in one of the cities that deals with vampires, same as the above
  • In one of the faction quests you come across a choice of accepting the "dark gift" or declining it.
Obviously the last two are one time only things but the first has many chances of happening as you will bump into many vampires along your travels.

When you contract the disease, you have 3 days to cure it. Which as mentioned above can be cured by many methods. Once the 3 days have gone you will become a fully fledged vampire and only way to cure it is to complete the vampire cure quest.

Also I wouldn't go as far saying it is the best game ever, it is ONE of the best games in its genre but many state its predecessor, Morrowind to be better than Oblivion even though Oblivion holds the technilogical advantage. Compared to other games it is good but even this game holds flaws

re: Advice and GOTY edition advice

So GOTY has the extra features and the original doesn't? I'm also planning to get this game, since GTAIV is boring, and a couple of my friends recommend this game. I just want to make sure.

Oh yeah, any glitches in this edition?

re: Advice and GOTY edition advice

The GotY only really has SI expansion pack. You can get that from the PS Store. But it costs $30 so it will be more economical to buy GotY since you you could get the game for less that $30 because it has been more that a year since the game came out. And your friend obviously has the original game so the glitches wont be a problem for you.

There are going to be glitches on every game, they've fixed a couple on the GoTY. Btw, you can't buy SI from the EU PS store.

You get both Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles in GOTY. Save yourself a couple of ten-dollar downloads and just get GOTY.

Alright then, thanks guys.

And since the glitches are fixed in GOTY, that means no money glitch? XD What about the vampire bug I've heard about?

re: Advice and GOTY edition advice

The vampire bug is a glich in which (rymed ) you can't give the nightshade to the witch who changes you back into a human on the vampire cure quest if im not mistaken. This bug is only on the GOTY edition and the only way to cure yourself after becoming a vampire is to rent or buy the original edition and do the quest on that, save, then return to your GOTY edition.
