Is there any way to begin at the level where you died and not go back to level 1

No. I've never seen or heard of any way. If someone has hacked it to do that then I'm not sure how they did it.

After a lot of trials and failings, I have been able to beat the game one time. There are only 20 levels with a total of 84 tanks.

After you beat the 20 levels, you unlock more levels. I have a game paused at home right now on level 42.

I have a high score of 540 tank kills...not sure what mission that was around 100ish I think. When I killed #540 it said mission completed just like mission 20 does the first time you beat it. I have not gotten back to that level with the same Mii again though I have been close. Not sure if there is anything after 540 kills or not.
