I'm not too sure on these but yea
1.
Assanation: dont know, haven't tried
Combat: Getting more hits, and harder Non-crit hits, usually sword or mace spec, on and not getting hit as much, aka +5%parry/Riposte
Subtility: Opening, usually trying to get as big as possible opening, also there are some talents that help Stealth speed, and chance of being noticed, also some of your stealth abilities are buffed

Skinning/LW: mainly because you use leather, helps you get your armor
Mining/Skinning: Money makers
Mining/Herbalism: Money makers, probably more then skining
Mining/Engineering: Many fun toys to play with
Mining/BS: Dont try it, but end game you can be a swordsmith/macesmith and make "weapons [that] are always super sexy"

The Assasination tree is used for getting maximum crits and ctit chance.

Most specs are heavy in either Assasination or Combat, with a few points spent in the other tree by lv70. If you use daggers / fist weps go mainly combat, if your swords / maces go mainly assasination

Also, what about the orc rogue? They aren't exactly small

for my rogue im doing 19 assasination and 42 combat and concentrating on swords, supposedely its a solid build that dishes out the pain^_^

DPS = damage per second. All rogue specs are DPS specs, some are better than others.

Why would someone go assassination if using swords? The top talent is mutilate which requires daggers.

I'd say:
Assassination: Daggers
Swords, fists, maces: combat
Sub: PVP

Gnomes warriors abolished this consistency though. :/

As for specs, my facetime with a rogue was long ago before a massive amount of changes. My experience was that Subtlety was a good utility spec. The neat and useful things about getting around with a rogue because more useful and helpful. I assumed the other two were for min/maxing and all about killing somebody faster and more efficiently.

i only know rogues from my friend (who has 2 70 rogues and loves the class)

Assassination - Daggers, poisons, very crit dependant.

Combat - in your face (basically a warrior) but rather than armor, you have other utilities.

Subtlety - stealthy, all about the initial burst, daggers

to pve the most effective is combat swords, altho assassination would be good only if the mobs are not immune to poisons.

arena build most go combat maces. since the shadowstep changes (theres been quite a few more of them, but not sure if theyre just trying it out still or actually using it).

but all 3 trees are forms of dps just how they do their dmg varies with the tree.

for lvling, combat is the way to go.
