You will not be able to play Draenei or Blood Elves, but you will be able to play the game. You can not have jewelcrafting as a profession or visit Outland, or get past level 60 without B.C. (amongst other things in the expansion).

It's like with Diablo II.

You can still play the original game without the expansion, but you can't access any of the features that come with the expansion (draenei, outlands, etc).

Your current limitations in game as they are right now is what you'll be able to do.

I.E. No Outland, no going above level 60, no Draenei or Blood Elf chars for yourself.

Yes, you can still play without having BC. Installing BC will "unlock" the Draenei and Blood Elf races and other features previously mentioned in the thread. It's not a necessity but it allows you to explore the game even more and level up to higher levels. It's pretty cheap last I checked, I picked it up for £10.
