re: Level up trouble.

I'll try to help, but I wanna ask this question.

Do you go into battles alot? Or do the dispatch missions mostly?

re: Level up trouble.

You will level up at the end of quests, not mid-battle. If you need some levels to complete a quest I suggest fighting in some Monster Battles. (if your far enough into the game)

re: Level up trouble.

If you keep losing I suggest you have at least one white mage who can constantly heal your troops so they don't die. Otherwise try having more long range attackers such as black mages or Archers.

re: Level up trouble.

upgrading your items would be a good start. use the bazaar in the shop to get the ability to purchase new items. White mage helps a lot. Also remember to get behind your enemies when you can (when its not forbidden anyway) and knock em on the back of the head for extra damage.

follow the law when possible. law bonuses help a TON in the beginning, you can get some nice weapons and armor from that. Also, breaking the law takes away your ability to use phoenix down and raise.

oh yeah, upgrade from soldier and warrior the first chance you get. their abilities are not worth too much. Choose what your characters will become in the beginning and keep them on that path for the best stat growths. example, a mage should never become a solider or archer.

Beastmaster SUCKS! the only real use for it is to force a monster to use a spell on a blue mage so he can learn the spell... since monsters tend to avoid my blue mage like a plague.

get your viera away from Fencer ASAP unless you intend for her to become a spellblade, if so, leave her as a fencer until you get spellblade, except maybe to learn a few elementalist spells to assist with some debuffing.

re: Level up trouble.

Actually, combining primary fighter types with secondary mage types is sometimes a great idea, for example the Paladin/White Mage.

Also, close combat types turning into mages to get passive abilities is common, like Geomancy for the Paladin/Parivir combo.

well, yeah, gaining the skills is one thing, but don't spread out your stat growth too much or it'll impair your character.

here's a nasty thought for you, if something has the Stop debuff, they can't avoid ANYTHING. you can level a thief/juggler, thief/time mage, or thief/fusilier then use the stop ability, then pick the poor fool clean. Fantastic way to get some decent items early on... well, not in the beginning of the game, but you won't be too far down the road before it kicks in. I have a 6 man team devoted to thieving everything off of every enemy I can, the entire team has a Stop debuff, and master thief.

or, you can use the Stop debuff, then hit them with disable and doom, making the poor sap completely irrelevant, as doom will kill them before disable wears off.
