The Master Levels

Has anyone else played these? After a long time searching I was finally able to get my hands on a copy, considerably easier said than done in my experience.

I'm 15 levels through at the moment, going in alphabetical order of map name. They're not all as tough as it might seem, though there's a fair bit of backtracking through levels to activate things on some maps. Other maps are difficult purely because of the number of monsters in your face at once, especially on Mephisto which requires a good deal of luck to get past some places. Some of the levels are actually really easy though requiring no more than a moderate amount of health to get past.

I've played the classic Doom games so much that I don't find many things in the game as hard as others might, so I'm maybe slightly disappointed that not all of the levels are designed with the intent of pushing the limits of the skills of the person playing, especially since it's called the "Master" Levels. That said, it's nice to see some more "official" maps having played the ones in Doom, Doom II and Final Doom to death.

I've also not played the supposed hardest mission yet, which is The Elevator Express To Hell (TEETH) so my opinion may change after that.

re: The Master Levels

I never even knew about these Master Levels. I've played the three classic games and thought they were great. But how long have these master levels been available?

re: The Master Levels

It's only been available since the end of 1995.

I finished TEETH by the way, the only real difficulty was the extreme lack of space to maneuver, otherwise it wasn't too bad.

re: The Master Levels

It was more or less an expansion game for Doom II, especially where you actually need a copy of Doom II to run it. It wasn't that heavily marketed, and is pretty hard to find these days. Places like Amazon and eBay (if you're lucky) seem to still have some copies, but you're more likely to find a bar of gold than this game in shops these days, even retro shops.

Well today I beat Grosse and Wolfenstein. I also defeated Go 2 It and Cyberden. I am still working on Icon of sin. *See Cheats Thread for Something very odd*

Grosse and Wolfenstein are both levels from Doom II. Cyberden and Go 2 It are both from the Plutonia WAD of Final Doom, so if you're going to post about those levels, it's best to do it in their respective forums. This forum is just for the Master Levels expansion.

re: The Master Levels

The weapons/enemies/items are all the same, it's just 21 new levels to play through. I'd say it's fun purely because it's different levels to play through. A couple of them are really quite tough to beat, a couple of tricks used are just ridiculously hard to execute or spot.

It's a nice little thing if you can get your hands on it for sure, a couple of the levels are almost certainly impossible to beat without saving, or without extreme luck, they're that difficult.

re: The Master Levels

After finishing Doom II last year I was itching to get my hands on these levels somehow. But they're just not about... Even trying to acquire them illegally is near to impossible...

Like I said, eBay or Amazon.com are probably your best bets, I did see a few copies of it floating around there, but it's definitely extremely difficlt to get your hands on it these days.

I'd totally finish this expansion in around 30 minutes if Deathman ever got around to fixing my thread.

re: The Master Levels

I'm not sure but I think I played and beat these way back in and around 1995. I know I played through the Wolfenstein Level in Doom II. That was funny as shit seeing the old German guards coming after the Doom guy.

Maybe I will download these for shits and giggles, but there are so many more modern shooters to mess with these days, I am just not sure that the old Doom II expansions from over 10 years ago would be any fun.

re: The Master Levels

It's fun if you play it as what it is, which is an expansion pack to Doom II. If you go into it expecting it to be Halo, like so many kids these days do, then obviously it's not going to be fun. Just remember how many modern shooters wouldn't be around in the way they are now if it wasn't for Wolfenstein, and then ultimately Doom.

And by download I hope you mean purchase. =P

re: The Master Levels

Really? I assumed that after all this time that Id would have made all of this stuff freeware and had a download page on their sites, like Rockstar did with all the old GTA games pre-GTA III. lol I take it by your tongue-in-cheek answer though that this isn't the case, D-Man?
