Tomb Raider Copy?

Wow, just wow. I played this game tonight and I couldn't believe what I saw. I don't know if anyone here has played the Tomb Raider series, particularly the last installments (Legend and Anniversary)? Is it just me or did the creators of this game just shamelessly copy the entire engine of Tomb Raider Legend/Anniversary? The moving around, the gunfights, the puzzels, the environment. Everything is extremely similar. And some aspects, such as hanging from a cliff and shimmying, rope swinging and jumping from edge to edge is just exactly the same. Even the controls are identical.

I think the game is great and I'm enjoying it and all cause I'm a huge fan of adventure games like this, but I just can't get over the fact the they simply stole the entire Tomb Raider concept and gameplay. Unless they made a deal or something I don't know about, I seriously think this is unacceptable.

Who the hell cares? Its still an awesome game. And its much better than any Tomb Raider game. Although I did love Legend and Tomb Raider III but this game is still kickass and the graphics are breathtaking.

re: Tomb Raider Copy?

Actually unless they made the gun fights more realistic in the last two Lara was always out in the open and far more athletic than Nate. I felt that the thing Nate does were far more reasonable and even accomplishable by a human. Save perhaps a very few very lucky jumps. Lara on the other hand would have to be a world class gymnast to pull off even half of her moves.

But come on. To be fair the concept is hardly new. Indiana Jones did if first. Lara stole from him first. And this game didn't feel like Tomb Raider at all until the Spanish started attacking in the underground city. And then it took on an eyrie Silent Hill vibe in the German base. But for the most part it felt more like Indiana Jones fighting the Germans for the Ark.

Have you played the last two Tomb Raider games? What you say is true for the first 5 games, the moves Lara could do in those were pretty much impossible. But for the last two installments, her moves were very possible and reasonable and, like I said, exactly the same as the moves that can be done in this game. The whole game engine is a complete rip-off from the Legend engine and the whole climbing concept and animations are identical to those in Anniversary. I'm not comparing this game to the first Tomb Raider era, but to the Playstation 2 games.

As for the game concept, I know the adventure type exploring kind of game wasn't invented by Eidos, but the Tomb Raider games had their own unique atmosphere and this game gave me a very similar feeling while playing it. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but it just seems like Naughty Dog took a lot of their inspiration for this game from Tomb Raider.

To the other people thinking I'm bashing this game, I'm not. Like I said, I still think it's an awesome game and I have a great time playing it. I didn't create this thread to say which I think is better, Tomb Raider or Drake's Fortune, and I'm not talking about graphics or fun factor or whatever, I created it to compare both gameplay styles and game engines and note how similar they are.

Honestly, no.

I doubt the animations were the same though. According the Naughty Dog Nate's animations were supposed to be procedural. Meaning the CPU was calculating how he should move on the fly. The PS2 couldn't do that. They might have looked similar simply because there are only so many realistic ways you can climb a cliff. But they couldn't be exactly the same.

That's some gameplay footage of Anniversary. I looked up a video with some climbing on purpose. Watch it for a bit and then tell me again you don't see the similarities. I won't argue that the PS3 is obviously more powerful and can make movement look even more realistic, and that of course there are so many realistic ways to climb a cliff, but this is one and the same way.

Wasn't Anniversary announced after Uncharted?

And I honestly think you couldn't do the movements much different, too...

re: Tomb Raider Copy?

I see enough differences that it is obvious it isn't a direct copy. It is really just a matter of the way the human body moves in a realistic way to accomplish climbing. Though I see Lara is still doing handstands on ledges and her jumps are still a great deal furthur than the average human could pull off. Plus barring any combat in that video it still looks like she fights without cover. Which would get Nate killed in short order.

I don't doubt they have a similar feel. I get more of an Indian Jones vibe from the game than Tomb Raider. But they are all doing pretty much the same thing after all.

re: Tomb Raider Copy?

I just finished Uncharted and its a great game. Its very similar to Tomb Raider, which is a good thing. Nothing wrong with copying as long as you do it well and Uncharted defintiely did that. I heard the game Conan was a copy of God of War, but still isn't as good as it. Thats too bad, i wouldn't mind another God of War to tie me over until GTA 4. I guess i'll have to wait until Devil May Cry 4.
