ok i accidentally forgot to grapple the ring before going on the other side of the checkerboard. so i made all the 7 swords fall and now i realize that i need to do that ring thing. but when i try to get back to the other side i keep getting killed. any suggestions or am i going to have to start from the beginning?...i only have one save.

Stellalune's Walkthrough lists Checkpoint 41 as you approach the activated checkerboard, and Checkpoint 42 when you pull the switch to open the way back to the Damocles' Key room.

So after dying Lara should be back at Checkpoint 41, just entering the Checkerboard room from the Damocles' Key room. She should be able to turn right around and grapple the ring to get up to pull the switch.

So your best hope is that you're confused about which checkpoint dying returns Lara to.

If not, then you've got problems with only a single save.

Just tried that section. Dying always put Lara back before the sword maze.

Even if that doesn't work for you, there's still hope. It's possible for Lara to reach the next switch by going through the next part of the sword maze.
From the white exit square turn left. Go past the column, red square with sword, and another column. The white square on the left is the entrance to the next section of the sword maze.

Here's the pattern:

RWRW
WRWR
RWRWR
0w0-

The lowercase w is the entrance, between two 0 that represent columns. It's actually offset a half-square farther to the right.

You'll have to watch the movement pattern for a bit, because it's a little different from the other side of the maze. I managed to get through and reach the next switch. Then went across from there and dropped down to get back to the key room for the relic and to pull the first switch.

yeah after 3 hours of trying to figure out the pattern for the checkerboard, i finally just gave up and started the game over again. I'm about to enter that part again and i won't make the same mistake twice.But thank you for your help.
