re: Removing "Thumbs down" from comments

I have seen many a post that more than deserved thumbs down, and instead of thumbing them down (which we are unable to do still) the users now reply to the post saying that they would have thumbed it down.

I think it is clear that we want/need the thumbing down system back.

@Magimaster: that doesn't make sense. His posts should be worse now that there is no chance of the thumbs down system. Its like an inverse effect.

Eh, that's what I thought. But a lot more of his posts are actually coherent now. Congrats FB! But I'd like to reiterate my belief on bringing back the thumbs-down feature in some way or the other.

Because it was so terrible for people to thumb someone down instead of causing a whole scene by just calling them an idiot, right?

re: Removing "Thumbs down" from comments

Lulz at how everyone is now complaining about the thumbs down and wanting them back. While I would thumbs down the person calling Gothic Girl fat, I honestly don't see a person I want to thumbs down anymore. the thumbs down was more of an issues then helping, and the original purpose of them was not being used.

Smoke Yea it would be cause tbh it proves how scared you are just thumbing down a post without replying back which was the case majority of the time, which fits into the abusing part when posts of good quality shouldn't have been thumbed down.

I can't comment on this since I have no clue why its appearing this way to you. However perhaps without the certain people thumbing down my posts its actually being looked at in a better way. However regardless of the issue, I can't elaborate on why.

As for the those suggestions, im not entirely against those idea's of thumbs down being implemented in a different form. But unfortunately there will be some sort of abuse of it its inevitable. Like I believe i've seen some short of thumbing up on posts more than I would have expected before, whether people are abusing that to send a message idk. But at the mean time Im enjoying the no thumbs down. Not for my posts getting thumbed up, just not seeing my posts gets -'s for lame reasons.

That might be the single most ridiculous quote I've seen in this thread. Are you suggesting that I just go around thumbing people down for shits and giggles? Hell no, and if I disagree with something and feel the need to respond I do, which is pretty clear if you went and actually saw my Gamegrep comments.

Ever since the thumbs-down feature was taken away, it seems that Gamegrep's comments section has gotten stupider and more insulting than it's ever been. >_>
I haven't noticed that at all.

I agree with kik36 ... Putting a limit on thumbs-up/thumbs-down might keep people mindful of what they are really rating.
What kinds of limits would people suggest? If we had a limit system I wonder if we should limit how many thumbs a person can issue per 24hrs and how many of those thumbs can be used in a single thread. If we can nail down some specifics we could implement them and restore thumbs down with the result of it hopefully being abused less frequently.

Probably we can do the following in a relatively short time:
  1. show a list of thumbers, and what they thumbed
  2. limit the number of thumbs you can issue per day (but how do we determine how many you can issue?)
  3. limit thumbing to participants of a story and/or participants on GameGrep.
If we can determine the actual limits on #2 and #3 then we can start this ball really rolling.

Another System Altogether

I still feel like we should replace thumbs altogether with a single word descriptor that people can rate.

Eg:
  • Funny
  • Informative
  • Interesting
Then the number of people who tag the comment with each of those tags would increase its total score, to a total of +5, along with the one word descripting.

eg Funny +3

I consider this system a "Recommendation" system rather than a rating system, you are recommending others that that a comment is worth checking out and why.

This is pretty much what Slashdot does, and I was intending on adding it as a feature for forum thread recommendations. In the forum system, you would then be able to see what threads are "Recommended" that day, even perhaps by friends.

However, if a simple thumbs limit set of rules could be suggested we could implement that first and relatively quickly.

re: Removing "Thumbs down" from comments

Extending such a system to GameGrep would allow for a great set of comment viewing options. This means that you could choose to filter by descriptor or even give certain types of comments priority over others. It could also be linked to your Neofriends list, giving you the option to view only comments that were found to be worthwhile by those you trust.

I like the second one, but maybe add some more options. Like not-funny, biased and boring. With a limit per day like suggested.

I understand where you are coming from, but that sort of defeats the purpose of a recommendation system. I wouldn't recommend something to a friend because it's "boring".

Slashdot's system actually feels like it can be a great fit for GameGrep.

It would be intriguing, at the very least.
