[Suggestion] Simpler way to link to profiles |
|
I have seen many great descriptions on GameGrep. One of the more professional aspects of them is the cross-linking and cross-referencing of other GameGrep articles and (possibly more importantly) of game/company profiles.
To my knowledge - there is no real easy way to access these profile URLs to link without a bit of digging around. I suggest a simpler way to link to Company/Game profiles- that way it would be easier, and more feasible (as well as more likely) for contributors to utilize this style when they are writing their description. As I stated before it makes for great cross-referencing and looks very professional. (Plus it drives more hits to other related articles with ease) Perhaps something like the wiki linking system where we could just type [[Microsoft]] or [[EA]] to link to their respective profiles, or even [company=Microsoft]. For the games- we could perhaps use the same url based system that we have in place for the Neo_Tabs on the wikis. ------------------- Thanks Diamondflame for the Christmas Avatar.

It's a great way for the cross-pollination of information and cross-referencing as you say. We [GDN] maintain a database of publishers, developers, platforms and games and everything we post gets categorized so that if you look at any of those specific facets of information you see an entire collection of information, articles, news and assets on it and it tends to lead to more page reads per visit.
Incorporating it right into the post would then require people to use [EA] in the description. But if you had it all as external drop down or auto-complete fields that were optional it might work better. Not every description will use the company name if it is in the title. For example Exclusive Interview with Mr. X from Y We sat down with Mr. X and talked about game Z and he gave us some info and the new multi-player features. So in the description (not sure that is 150 characters You might also look into a 'related content' system where it analyzes tags or the content of each post and offers up suggestions for other content that appears to be similar in nature. That way if EA or Tiger Woods was used in a title or description it would see that and pull in a list of possibly related content. ------------------- Christophor Rick Editor-in-Chief http://www.gamersdailynews.com

There is a related content algorithm which showcases 5 other articles that could relate to yours (based on keywords I am assuming - I do not know exactly how it works).
A real simple linking function would greatly improve the quality and professionalism of the descriptions. I'm not too sure how a "template" type system would go over - I wouldn't be too fond of it, but that's just me - there hasn't been much input on any of my suggestions as of late ------------------- Thanks Diamondflame for the Christmas Avatar.

Yeah, I'd absolutely love this, personally, and was thinking about it myself. Digging around is just too much of a pain, but it would really flesh things out if this kind of thing was done..

quote DeathsytheBut unless you make this[X] system absolutely mandatory, which would be a big mistake, you run the risk of having uneven content. Some people will do it, some will not. So there will be entire piles of article about say EA that are not 'tagged' EA in any way. What you need is a hueristic approach to it all where if EA shows up in the title or content then it gets put into the EA pile. You give the readers the ability to say 'no this isn't EA' and that pulls it from the pile. But it would need to be automatic to be effective. Or mandatory, but that would just probably make people not post as much or at all. Just how I see it really. ------------------- Christophor Rick Editor-in-Chief http://www.gamersdailynews.com
