As per the subject, I am new to the ps3 - do i need to play cod4 to appreciate/follow the new up coming game?

The other CODs are irrelevant - they are all set in WWII - but MW2 is the sequel to MW (cod4). Although playing it might make you appreciate the storyline of the next one more, it will be entirely playable on it's own - there's no 'required reading', if you like.

I still recommend you get it though - get some multiplayer practise in before you dive into the new game!

You won't need to play COD4, but I would recommend that you try it out so you can get a feel for the gameplay and the storyline.

World at War is made by a different developer and is set in a different time period than the Modern Warfare series of the games.

Just rent cod4, maybe get some online practice as newbies will be getting slaughtered in the beginning of MW2, regardless of the death streaks. But there isn't really any point to buying it with MW2 coming out so soon. And regardless of what people think of it, I am not fond of the MW single player at all and I doubt I will enjoy the MW2 single player, the majority of call of duty players just do multiplayer.

Are you just gonna play story mode? - I'd reccommend buying CoD4 and completing first, contrary to common beleif if you are intelligent enough to follow the story line its actually very good. Im sure MW2 will be too, so if thats what interests you get CoD4 first.

Are you most interested in online mode? - If yes, I would actually say it doesnt matter, because I bet MW2 will feel quite different, so theres no point getting used to CoD4 online from scratch, because you'll just have to re-learn everything days later on MW2.

Are you most interested in the Spec Ops Mode? - If yes, then dont bother with CoD4. There was nothing substantially like this on CoD4 to justify you buying the game. This mode on MW2 will be unique to everyone, so just buy MW2 and enjoy.

Are you pretty much just interested in it all, cos you heard how good CoD4 was? - If yes, then definately buy CoD4. your appreciation of that game will give you a good indication as to how you will feel with MW2.

I still say buy this game when the new game comes out. It'll probably have a price decrease so get it. You can understand the story a bit more. plus that game was one of the beast.

Simply NO you don't need to. but i wold highly recommend playing it first. Like wat blazeboy11 said i would rent it not buy as MW2 is out soon and you can also get some online practice before MW2.

It'd be a good idea, just to get to know the storyline and get a feel for multiplayer/online. Its only a short game so you will have plenty of time with it.

I wouldn't recomend playing World at War in multiplayer or online to get used to online because, although they use the same engine and style, they are completely different.

Completely different in that one is good and the other is terrible.

i would really recommend it, but i would only play cod4, not WaW, because the game mechanics are generally the same, but the way the game looks and feels, i think is very different, but back to the topic, i would recommend it, so you can go into MW2 with a sense of what perks and guns you would be comfortable with using, so you dont go into the game blinded, also i would play CoD4 first, because its much better playing through the campaign and understanding the plot, than reading up on the plot

depends what your on ps3 no way unless you mod teh console, 360 yes but microsoft are now banning any live accounts that they find to have cracked games or moded consoles

I was talking about PC game. Didnt know i was int the ps3 forum.. duhh!! Are there going to be cracked servers or not??

As far as i know no there will not be but im not 100% on that as i dont play games on my pc.
