Finding Dad

Ok, so I'm doing that first main quest and I've got the guy from the bar to tell me where he is. One problem. I go along the route and find some ghouls mention something about super mutant brutes. There were some on the way in easwell having a shootout with someone. So I follow the route on the pip boy and all of a sudden theres like 3 brutes aswell as other enemies everywhere. After a quick attempt to run past them I got my ass kicked. I only really have crappy weapons like the silenced pistol and non silenced, I have a chinese assualt rifle with no ammo, and I have a Chinese sword thing. All the other weapons are crap like the BB gun.

So am I already supposed to have ultimate ownage guns by now? Oh and most enemies #i encounter I have to run from. I need help of what I should do here since ~I have sucky weps and can't find any decent ones. Thanks.

Dont rush through the questline or youll end up getting your ass handed to you. Stay out of DC till you have a healthy supply of ammo.

re: Finding Dad

Depends on your chosen style.

Small guns id pick a good ole hunting rifle and stick with it but any small guns skill type weapon will be decent throughout the game.

Slightly east from megaton is the store for moiras questline i found some decent stuff in there.

Get a Combat Shotgun ASAP. That weapon is too good.

And get some ammo for the Chinese Rifle. >.>

The ammo kinda gets scarce id use it in situations that need heavy damage. Least on my playthroughs i barely had shotgun ammo.

Shotgun shells are abundant in the game, if you just take the time to buy them from vendors loot dead enemies and search in containers.

I amassed 500 shells in 3 days of playing only around 2 hours a day.

re: Finding Dad

I SERIOUSLY don't recommend this until you have a ton of ammo and better weapons, but if you want one of the most powerful Small Guns in the game, go to a place called Evergreen Mills and look for a man named Smilin' Jack inside the building. He won't be hostile but you should kill him and take The Terrible Shotgun. He will also have a key to his inventory, so you can find a decent sized amount of ammo and weapons.

re: Finding Dad

In my expert opinion, forget the Terrible Shotgun. To get anything out of it, it requires a hella high Sneak, so you can sneak up on stuff and use a V.A.T.S sneak critical.

The Terrible Shotgun is named well, it has TERRIBLE accuracy. It may have a high DMG stat, but half the time it won't hit what you aim at.

DO NOT KILL SMILING JACK. HE'S THE BEST SOURCE OF AMMUNITION IN THE WASTES.

It's very beneficial to go back to him every 2-4 days to buy his ammunition, he has an ass load of it. Again, there's a Super Mutant Behemoth out the front of the building he's in (Evergreen Mills) so you may want to stack up on ammo or a few Mini-Nukes.

-----------------

Weapons you should get right this second;

Ol' Painless
- Unique Hunting Rifle. Found in the North East corner of the map in The Republic of Dave. You can mess around with the ballots, causing Dave to get voted out and he'll leave and give you the key to his safe, where Ol' Painless is. Or you could just kill everyone and take it.

Ol' Painless has a DMG stat of 30 when at 100% condition. It uses .32 Calibre rounds just like Hunting Rifles.

Lincoln's Repeater - Another unique. It has no basic counterpart and can be repaired with Hunting Rifles.

Found in the Museum of History (in D.C. You can simply run there from the Metro and ignore all the Super Mutants) in the Offices in the big room with all the work stalls in it at the top of a small flight of stairs (you're basically walking up onto a mezzanine level). The Repeater is in a display case which is a little taller than waist height on the left wall towards the back of the room, while standing at the top of the stairs. The place is populated with Feral Gouls, so they shouldn't be too much trouble. Watch out for the Glowing One at higher levels though.

The Repeater has a DMG stat of 50 when at 100% condition. It uses .44 Magnum Rounds, which are a little harder to come by, which is why I only use the Repeater for bigger/stronger enemies.

Grouped with Commando, Sniper and Concentrated Fire and a 100 Small Guns stat, you'll be invincible if you use V.A.T.S regularly. The fact that both guns have a 0.0 Spread, which means that, where you aim normally (outside V.A.T.S) the bullet will hit 100% of the time, where 95% of other guns in FALLOUT 3 have a Spread of 0.5 or higher, means that if you do decide to use them outside V.A.T.S they're dependable.

EDIT: Ohh, if you'd like to know more about the Xuanlong Chinese Assault Rifle, the Unique Chinese Assault Rifle, just ask.

I mostly found hunting rifle and Assault rifle ammo and amassed 150 shells without use by searching everywhere for first 3-4 hours and vendors mostly had assault and rifle ammo.

re: Finding Dad

Follow Ajax's advice for weapons. Apart from that, you'd do well to ignore DC and the main questline for now. Just roam around the Western part of the map, gain some levels, do some of the several side quests, then continue with the core quests when you feel ready.

re: Finding Dad

He'll mark 3 locations on your map, and tell you to check them out. The correct one is Meresti station, which is north west of Arefu, across the river. Enter the tunnels, follow the flaming barrels, till you reach the end.
