IF YOU ARE GOING TO FOLLOW THIS STORY, DO ME A FAVOUR AND JUST REMEMBER ITS NOT REAL SO I CAN MAKE EVERYTHING UP ABOUT PEOPLE. I KNOW ITS A LONG INTRO, BUT THIS SOMS IS GOING TO BE DOCUMENTARY STYLE FOCUSING ON THE MANAGER AND THE ISSUES HE DEALS WITH SO I WANTED YOU ALL TO HAVE A FEEL FOR HIM FIRST. I THINK IT'S GOING TO BE QUITE GOOD, AND HOPEFULLY A GOOD READ. ENJOY. Narrator: In the summer of 2008, Blackburn Rovers agreed a deal with the BBC to Document their New Manager for the forthcoming season...... Ryan of the Rovers Narrator: After the departure of Mark Hughes many people were tipped to take over at the club, the likes of former players Mike Newell and Alan Shearer and even frmer England boss, Steve McLaren. In July, Chairman John Williams announced that Rovers' former right-back Ryan Burns, who was part of the Premiership winning side in 1995. Remembered fondly for his gut busting runs down the flank and deadly set-pieces, most notably for a brace in a 2-1 win in the FA cup over local rivals Burnley. After just over 200 games for Blackburn he got a shock big money move to Juventus in the summer of 1996, where he had the luck of playing with legends such as Zidane, Del Piero, Deschamps and Davids. After scoring on his debut against Sampdoria, with a trade mark free kick, he removed his shirt to reveal a Blackburn Rovers shirt. He won two Serie A titles and played in both the '97 and '98 Champions League finals which Juve unfortunatley lost. In January '99 Burns, at the age of 32, moved to the arguably less glamourous surroundings, of Glasgow, joining Celtic initially on loan, but the move was made permanent in the summer after a string of fine performances. He stayed at the club until retiring in 2001 after helping Celtic to the League, League Cup and Scottish Cup. Burns also represented Scotland 38 times scoring 5 times. His best moment for Scotland came in the World Cup in France, scoring the equalizing goal against Norway which gave them there only point of the tournament. Although he was born in Nottingham, he chose Scotland because of his Scottish father. He then took a break away from the game to return to Nottingham and spend time with his family, and better his golf game. He returned to the game in 2004, taking a coaching role at former team mate Mike Newell's Luton Town. In 2006 he took his first step into management, a shock choice as the new manager of Coventry City. He implemented a mentality of style and flair up front, with grit and determination at the back. After two years at the club, differences between him and the board led to Burns leaving the club by mutual consent in April 2008. When appointed at Blackburn he recieved mixed reaction from the fans, while they had a former player at the helm, they felt his inexperience at the top level may be an issue, we pick up the story at his first press conference as Blackburns new manager....... John Williams: Ladies and Gentlemen, can I introduce to you, the new manager of Blackburn Rovers, Ryan Burns. [Rippled applause, while Ryan shakes hands with the chairman.] Ryan Burns: Thank you all for coming, I was hoping nobody would be here. Darren Lewis (Daily Mirror): Ryan, firstly, congratulations on the new job. Now, some people think your a strange choice as you are a relatively young and inexperienced manager, what do you say to those people? RB: Well, I dont know what to say to that really, I've had two years at Coventry and sure we didnt set the world on fire but the championships a tough league and I think I did well with what I had. At the end of the day it's my job to get the players ready for a game, thats every managers job, and to try to make sure we get a result. You can argue that a more experienced manager is a better manager, but we'll just have to wait and see. David Craig (Sky Sports): Ryan, if I could ask you about the squad, now the window shuts in just over a month, do you think you'll be bringing anyone in?? RB: ha ha ha, always have to dig into that one, erm, we'll wait and see, it depends if we need anyone. DC: So your happy with the squad? RB: Yeah I'm delighted with them, Mark Hughes has built a solid foundation, now it's up to me to build the walls, and hopefully a trophy room. [Amused laughter] RB: Why's that funny? We have a good a chance as anybody, and this club has won the Prem before, I should know. [Laughter] Narrator: The press conference continues with Ryan matching the reporters punch for punch. He leaves the press conference with a smile on his face, confident that he has won some friends in the media and won over some doubtful fans. Narrator: How do you think that went? RB: Pretty well, I dont think I embarrased myself too much in there, lets just hope they dont do journalistic twisting and make me look a fool. Narrator: And what now? RB: Well, trainings done and the players are gone home, so unless you fancy a kickabout I'm off. Ha ha ha, thought not. See you tomorrow fellas. Next Time on Ryan of the Rovers........... The Players talk about there new boss.... The season gets underway at villa park.... and Ryan gets angry at Setanta Sports after a story is released about his past.... | |
