Any thoughts, anyone? Casillas Salgado - - -Ruggeri - - - Carlos Ramos - - - Hierro Zidane Di Stefano Robinho - - - - - - -Raul Ronaldo Monaco Roma Amoros - Cufre - Monsoreau - Evra Genghini - Yaya Toure Giuly - - - - - - - - Iniesta Adebayor – - - - - - - - - - - Milla Match Report – 2 mins – GOAL!! Under-pressure Di Stefano plays in Robinho, but Evra narrows the angle so the shot goes straight at Roma, who palms in out for a corner. Carlos floats in the corner from the right. Cufre lets Ronaldo get away from him at the near post and he duly heads it right into the top corner, beating Monsoreau, the man on the post. Great start to the competition for Madrid. 12th Legends goal for the Brazilian. 7 mins – Genghini dribbles some way into the Madrid half, Monaco get overexcited and pour forward. When he speulatively searches out Iniesta, Hierro heads the ball to Di Stefano, almost alone inside the Monaco half, they nearly close him down and his 20-yard shot is turned around the post by Roma. Di Stefano heads wide from the corner. 9 mins - A slick Iniesta-Adebayor exchange flummoxes Sergio Ramos and the Togolese striker waltzes through the gap he leaves. His placed shot beats the onrushing Casillas but is wide by a good two yards. 12 mins – Evra is the only Monaco defender doing anything useful to stop the Madrid attack. 15 mins – Ramos seems to be enjoying his role at DM. He gets over the halfway line to find Raul who crosses for Ronaldo to head well wide. 26 mins – GOAL!! Giuly and Iniesta are driving Monaco on. Giuly takes advantage of Salgado haplessly playing Yaya Toure inside, taking 4 men out of the picture with one wonderful pass. Casillas is a spectator as Toure blasts the ball beyond him. Game on. 32 mins – Bad luck for Madrid. Evra mistimed a tackle, allowing Robinho past him, he passes to Ronaldo who glides into the box as if Cufre wasn’t there. His placed shot loops over Cufre before striking the post. Giuly clears. 34 mins – Madrid are knocking on the door. A second successive corner is cleared and falles to Zidane. Some deft chest control takes him beyond Giuly and his half volloey is cleared off the line by Evra. 39 mins – Evra hacks down Robinho to the right of the area, earning a yellow card. 45+1 mins – GOAL!! Another of Robinho’s runs stretch Monaco as Iniesta can only force a throw. It goes straight to Robinho who crosses it over the head of everyone except Raul on the far side. Nobody picked him up and he enjoyes a free header, he put back across Roma and into the bottom corner. Monaco have been woeful at set pieces. Half Time – 2-1 does not justify the dominance of Madrid who, apart from one horrific mistake by Salgado, have really not given away much. 50 mins – GOAL!! Madrid seem determined to self-destruct as a misplaced Carlos pass falls to Adebayor. Ruggeri seemed to have wrested the ball from him, but mystifyingly chooses to backheel it to Ramos. Adebayor pounces on it and fired it beyond Casillas, who might have done better. 58 mins – Robinho chests down a Roberto Carlos cross before shielding it from Iniesta and busting into the area and forcing a great save low down from Cufre. 61 mins – Adebayor’s strength is causing all sorts of problems, he draws in the defence before setting Roger Milla away with a great thorough ball. Casillas manages to smother it. 69 mins – Roma is called on again. Roberto Carlos tackles Iniesta to give Ronaldo a half chance from 20 yards. He does well to fire it on target with force, but it’s just too close to Roma, who pushes it away. Guti on for Zidane. 73 mins – Guti’s first action is nearly in assist, but his cross is headed over by Di Stefano. Roma are playing for a draw and look shaky. 88 mins – Adeboyor has a great chance, but shoots straight at Casillas. Another Ruggeri pass pounced on. Madrid look desperate. 90+1 mins – Sergio Ramos blocks an Iniesta cross for a corner. Can Monaco snatch it? Genghini’s corner is headed out by Ramos and the ref calls full time! FINAL SCORE: REAL MADRID CF 2-2 AS MONACO Summary Madrid might have had more shots and Roma may have played a blinder, but Madrid were in the driver’s seat twice in the game and some highly questionable defending from Ruggeri and Salgado cost them dear. With Monaco at home next leg with 2 away goals, this one is wide open. Man of the Match – Roberto Carlos - 7.0 ------------------- | |

Thank you, I'll do my best to make it look good. Round of 16 – AFC Ajax vs Liverpool - Leg 1 Total Football against the tough, disciplined Liverpool. I can’t pick a winner. Teams   Match Report – 2 mins – Rosales exposes Liverpool down the right straightaway, a pass to Litmanen leads to slick backhell for Ibrahimovic to punt right at Reina. Corner. 8 mins – GOAL!! Cruyff absolutely get one over on Finnan, leaving him sprawled on the ground to the left of the area/ Cruyff advanced along the goal line and held off Carragher and Gerrard before passing to the feel of Ibrahimovic who manged to turn in a tight space before firing a shot towards the far post, which hit Wesley Sneijder who was 2 yards away. He knew nothing about it, but the ricochet beat Reina before bouncing off the top half of the inside of the post and into the net! 11 mins – Cruyff is really exposing Finnan here. A low Ibrahimovic cross slipped past Litmanen and looked to be heading to Finnan but Cruyff somehow stretched to get a foot on it, but sent it right it Reina. Corner. 20 mins – The Ajax attack are really up for this, constant pressure provoke mistakes from Hansen and Barnes. Ajax look like adding to their lead, and soon. 21 mins – GOAL!! What did I tell you? Barnes’ mistake led to a throw in for Ajax, Rosales received it and crossed it to the far post a unmarked Johan Cruyff connected with a diving header Reina couldn’t hope to get near. 23 mins – Some fight from Liverpool at last as Gerrard bursts down the right and his cross comes off the boot of Chivu to force a corner, but Barnes’ corner is easily claimed by Van Der Sar. 25 mins – Chivu is injured after a clash with Steven Gerrard and can’t continue. Maxwell is his replacement. 27 mins – Wonderful football. Krol gets forward and puts a cross in for Cruyff. It’s obvious that Gerrard with get his head to it before Cruyff will, so Ibrahimovic comes back from his advanced position to knock it down beautifully for Cruyff, who lets it bounce and takes it beyond Finnan with a single touch. He shoots with his next touch, but the angle is tight allowing Reina to get a strong hand to it and Hansen clears it. 35 mins – I don’t think Ian Rush has touched the ball yet. 41 mins – Rosales skins Riise, but his shot is nearly out of the ground. 45 mins – Rush finally gets a touch, but it’s to knock it to Keegan who is immediately called offside. 45+2 mins – GOAL!! The Ajax masterclass keeps getting better. Cruyff is hemmed in my Souness and Alonso, but they leave too much space in the centre and the simplest of passes sees Wesley Sneijder advance throught the biggest of spaces before firing a bullet of a shot past Reina. He meant that one. 3-0. Half Time – It’s all Ajax. 57% of the possession and Liverpool haven’t had a shot. They’re not exactly a one man team, either. As impressive as Cruyff was, Sneijder and Rosales have shown their talent here. 47 mins – A shot for Liverpool was Gerrard blows by Oliseh and Maxwell on the right before turning and passing low across goal for Rush, but he doesn’t anticipate it and has to stretch awkwardly and puts it well wide. 49 mins – GOAL!! Cruyff goes by Finnan for what must be the hundredth time this match and puts in a shot Reina can only turn around the post. The Liverpool centrebacks can’t get back fast enough to close him down. The corner is put in by Cruyff from the left and the 6’ 4” Zlatan Ibrahimovic to climb above Hansen and head in off the underside of the bar. 53 mins – GOAL!! – Bloody hell. This is a rout. Gerrard, who will be the only Liverpool to emerge from this with any pride played some great football in the centre of the park before giving it to Souness, who immediately give it away to Litmanen. A slick pass to Ibrahimovic on the edge of the area, and he embarrasses Hansen by going almost through him and slots the ball into the cornet. That humiliation will be Hansen’s last act, as Fowler comes on for him. 59 mins – Fowler’s first touch is the biggest threat Van der Sar’s had all day. Rush chips a wonderful ball into the box for him, but Van der Sar gets a hand to his deft volley. Corner. 61 mins – GOAL!! Even Liverpool corners lead to Ajax goals. Hulshoff cleared the corner to Heitinga, who picked out Rosales in his own half. One quick pass to Litmanen, stood in the centre circle and Liverpool were in trouble. The three man defence was split open by a great through ball to Zlatan Ibrahimovic who easily outmuscled Finnan before curling the ball onto the side of Reina’s net from 25 yards. 63 mins – GOAL!! I think half the team have gone home. As Liverpool charge into the Ajax half, Jari Litmanen nicks the ball from Souness in the centre circle and finds the back 3 woefully exposed. They back off and off until Litmanen get within 25 yards of the goal and blasts an unstoppable shot right into the top corner. Poor Reina, he hasn’t really been at fault for any of these goals. 71 mins – The huge spaces in Liverpool’s half are farcical. Up front there are glimpses of quality. Keegan does well to keep possession in the box, but Gerrard shoots his pass right at Van der Sar. 74 mins – Danny Murphy on for Barnes. 82 mins – Nothing is going Liverpool’s way. Some great footwork from Murphy takes him beyond Krol. He puts in a great pass to Gerrard who bursts free of Hulshoff and just when it seems he has Van der Sar beaten, he blazes wildly over. FULL TIME FINAL SCORE: AFC AJAX 7-0 LIVERPOOL Man of the Match – Zlatan Ibrahimovic – 7.5 Summary An extraordinary result, and not one we’re likely to see repeated. As poor as Liverpool were, Ajax sent out a warning here. Not only was their defence disciplined, repelling the Liverpool team at nearly every opportunity, but their attack was rampant. Sneijder exploited space wherever he could find it, Litmanen never misplaced a pass, Ibrahimovic was dominant and I don’t think Finnan got near Cruyff. Note: I’m very proud, Ajax are inferior in terms of stats, I’ve never beaten a decent team 7-0 on top player before. How's that? ------------------- | |

Round of 16 - Bayern Munich vs Valencia - Leg 1 Top scorer Roy Makaay will look to add to his mystifyingly high tally against underdogs Valencia. Teams   Match Report - 11 mins - A cagey first 10 mins, both sides about equal. First real chance when a poor Canizares clearence is returned by Makaay, heading the ball to Muller, who turns and gets the half-volley in, but it's simple for a relieved Canizares to deal with. 15 mins - Valencia keep giving the ball to Vicente, whose pace causes real issues down the left. 16 mins - Serious issues, too. Vicente comes inside and gives it to Mendienta, who knocks it back first time for Baraja, advancing quickly just outisde th area. His shot is right at Meier, but the power on it is such that he drops it. Brietner is on hand to scramble it away. 27 mins - Another Bayern pass goes astray in the final third. Valencia's movement is really good and they're outfighting them in midfield. 31 mins - Bayern corner. Schwarzenbeck nicks the ball from Villa and sets Scholl away on a great run, who after a quick 1-2 with Rummenigge forces Canizares to turn his 25 yard shot around the post. 38 mins - GOAL!! Number 26 for Roy Makaay. A game of head tennis sees the ball land at the feet of Gerd Muller and with his back to goal on the edge of the area, he moves the ball 5 yeards to the right, into the feet of Makaay, who goes by Albiol and clips the ball ever so gently over Canizares dive at his feet. Marchena can't catch the ball as it trickles agonisingly over the line. 40 mins - A poor header from Schwarzenbeck falls to Ilie, but the ROmanian blasts his shot well over the bar. 45+1 mins - It's nearly another for Makaay. Ayala's terrible pass is seized on by Muller who spots Makaay in a huge gap between the two centre backs. The pass is good and Makaay's first time whot is palmed out for a corner. Half Time - Valencia need to get higher up the pitch, any attacks are eaisly stifled and defensive mistakes are made 10 times worse with Makaay and Muller hovering about. The midfield battel is very even, but Bayern have excelled in attack and defense. 51 mins - Some intent from Valencia and Villa recieves in good positions 3 times in quick succession. However, a combination of Schwarzenbeck, the offside trap and his own poor pass leave Maier untroubled. 53 mins - A marvellous through ball from Podolski puts Makaay thorugh, but good work from Albelda foces him into the pass. His ball to Muller is good but Miguel gets a great challenge in just before he pulls the trigger. 59 mins - Van Bommel has the ball stolen on the wing by Baraja. He puts a low ball into Villa, unmarked just behind the penalty spot. Evading the sliding challenge of Matthaus, rifles a shot in just too close to Maier who gets an outstretched foot to it. Ilie steams in but his shot is back off Maier again. 60 mins - Goodness me. Maier fists the dropping ball away but it doesn't quite make it out for a throw and the under-pressure Brietner's backheel isn't hard enough to get to Scholl and Ilie nicks it! Thankfully for Bayern, his through ball to Villa has too much on it and goes out for a goal kick. Ballack on for Scholl. 64 mins - Canizares needed to be on his toes there, a ball right across the goalmouth would have given Makaay an open goal if not for his reactions. 73 mins - Beckenbauer misplaces a pass right into the feet of Vicente. He advances into the area but Der Kaiser recoveres with a great last ditch tackle. Had to get that one right. 82 mins - Podolski holds off Ayala and rounds Villa before curling a ball round Albelda to Makaay in the six yard box, but he has to stretch awkwardly and sends it over. 84 mins - GOAL!! Great stuff as substitute Tavano chips the ball over thead of Breitner into the path of David Villa in the area, who lets it bounce before taking it on the half volley- smashing beyond Maier and high into the side of the netting! With that, Valencia become favourites in this round. FULL TIME FINAL SCORE - BAYERN MUNICH 1-1 VALENCIA Summary Bayern were unlucky here, they did have the better of the chances, but credit to Valencia, they battled hard and with Villa's eventual beating of the offside trap, they've put themselves in a great position to advance to the quarters. Thanks, both of you. I'd be happy post up some of the stats of the legends. I'm too young to have in-depth knowledge of many of these legends, most of the stats came from a mix of multiple FM Legends databases floating around, descriptions of the players found on the internet and just asking people who were around to see them play. I'm also not fantastic at or particularly bothered about creating great appearances for players, but obviously PES2008 is a lot better in the regard and there are a lot of people here who are good at it. Round of 16 – Benfica vs AC Milan – Leg 1 Benfica really need a goal or two to have a chance at advancing at the San Siro, they will look to Eusebio today. Teams   Match Report – 7 mins – A bright start for both sides. Eusebio tests Dida from distance and Germano has to slide to cut out a great pass to Van Basten. Worryingly, it took 3 men to stop Van Basten when he did pick up the ball. 8 mins – Costacurta shows Miccoli what type of game he’s in for. He takes the ball but gives the little Italian a fair shunt in the process. 17 mins – The Milan back line is giving nothing away. Even Eusebio isn’t finding any give. 19 mins – Ole! He’s not Spanish but George Weah did a great impression of a bullfighter there. He changed direction so quickly, Luisao was about 4 yards past him before he knew what had happened. Germano can’t catch him, but one-on-one with Preud’homme, Weah drags his shot wide. 29 mins – Milan corner. Benfica can’t cope with Weah’s power and he blasts the ball at Preud’homme after racing onto a Savicevic pass. 31 mins – GOAL!! Benfica don’t clear that corner properly and the ball spoons up off the head of Leo, he clears it with another header but Paolo Maldini is lurking just inside the area and the full-back takes the ball on the volley, diriecting it through a crowd of players and off the inside of the post.Great goal. 36 mins – Milan are flexing their muscles now. A clearance loops up into the area and comes to Gullit 30 yards from goal. He hammers in a volley with tons of pace straight at Preud’homme. The astonished goalie drops the ball right at Weah’s feet but just manages to recover enough to knock his shot over the bar. 39 mins – First scare for Milan. Mario Coluna finds space outside his own area after the corner was clear and advanced to the halfway line where he passes forward to Cardozo. He keeps the move running by knocking it to the feet of Eusebio who gets the better of Trapattoni, but Dida just gets a hand to his powerful shot. Baresi clears it for a throw. 43 mins – GOAL!! Breathtaking stuff. The Benfica defence push up too far and a pass from Savicevic puts Marco Van Basten through just inside the Benfica half. He dribbles all the way into the area, exposing Germano’s lack of pace before slipping the ball easily into the far corner. Too easy. Half Time – You should never count a team out, but it really does look like Benfica can’t win. Stay deep and they won’t score in a week, get forwards and Milan’s attack expose them effortlessly. Eusebio looks isolated, with Costacurta and maldini not giving an inch down the wings. Imperious display so far by Milan. 49 mins – Is that the first time a Milan defender has broken a sweat? Eusebio finds some space just outside the area on the left. A great pass across the area looks to put Cardozo in on goal, but Maldini does brilliantly to get across and put in the sliding tackle. 55 mins – What a chance. Chalana wriggled free of Maldini and made a pinpoint cross to Cardozo, inside the area, but his shot was right at Dida. 67 mins – Mistake by Costacurta to let Miccoli in, but he takes a touch too many and Dida smothers it. 68 mins – Cardozo makes space that Eusebio exploits, testing Dida with a powerful shot he turns round the post. 73 mins – How did that stay out? Cardozo makes a hash of a free header, Eusebio miscontrols the loose ball and Coluna’s great shot from a poor clearance is brilliantly saved by Dida. 81 mins – GOAL!! – A hint of good fortune about this one, but they won’t care. From the left wing, Miccoli found Cardozo in space well insde the area. His shot came off the shin of Trapattoni who didn’t get much at all on it. The ball fell to Eusebio who smashed the ball into the roof of the net from 6 yards. He grabs the ball and runs straight back to the centre circle. 86 mins – Eusebio, a flurry of activity tackles two players inside the Milan half before finding Coluna 25 yards out. All the Benfica fans get to their feet as his curling shot loops over Dida, but creeps a foot wide of the post. Rijkaard on for Van Basten. 90+1 mins – Costacurta moves into the centre to deal with Cardozo, but the space he leaves behind is instantly exploited by Cardozo who knocks a ball out to the wing for Miccoli. He passes along the ground, evading Baresi. Eusebio beats Trapattoni to it, but his shot right at the top corner is parried by Dida. Great save. The corner just evades the head of Chalana. Maldini clears and the ball breaks to Gullit who finds the majority of the defence up for the corner. He sidesteps Germano, sprints into his own half, but Preud’homme easily catches his attempt at a chip. FULL TIME FINAL SCORE – SL BENFICA 1-2 AC MILAN Man of the Match – Paolo Maldini– 7.5 Summary Benfica took it to Milan in the second half, but their mistakes cost them dear in the first. As hard as they fought, Milan deserved it today. Despite that, Benfica probably won’t get hammered at the San Siro. They look very unlikely to go through, but should come out with their heads held high. ------------------- | |

Thanks! Round of 16 - Manchester United vs AS Roma – Leg 1 Man Utd put 7 past Roma in 2007, but this time Cafu and Aldair protect the Roma goal. On their day, the underrated Roma can beat anyone. Teams   Match Report 1 min - Giggs takes the ball down the left with the Roma defence too narrow. He cuts inside and shoots from the edge of the area, but Mexes blocks it and concedes a corner. 2 mins – Van Nistelrooy does well to get above Aldair, but his header is weak and wide. 19 mins – Giggs bundles Ronaldo’s spilled shot over the line, but the goal is ruled out for offside! 23 mins – Edwards fights for the ball in midfield, eventually getting a pass away to Ronaldo who blasts the ball over the bar. 31 mins – How did he miss that? Great work from Giggs on the wing followed by him dribbling onto the box ends in pass that puts Van Nistelrooy one on one from 8 yards, but he spoons the shot over the bar. 37 mins – GOAL!! A thunderstrike! Ince clears a Roma freekick towards the centre circle. Bobby Charlton takes it over the halfway line and keeps going and going until he’s just outside the area. With Martinez closing him down from behind and Aldair coming across, he unleashes a trademark bullet right into the top left hand corner. Doni wasn’t getting near it. 41 mins – United are showing some great counterattacking play here. A wobble at the back as Ghiggia knocks Keane off balance, opening up an opening on the wing for Cafu is ended by Ferdinand’s clearance. The ball falls to Charlton again and from the halfway line, he finds Van Nistelrooy through three Roma players, but his first time shot is easy for Doni. 44 mins – GOAL!! Boniek gets the better of Brown on the left and his cross beats Keane for Cerezo to head in. 45+1 mins – Giggs is off down the wing once again, but runs into traffic. Boniek’s tackle knicks the ball back to Brown who passes to Charlton, whose 25 yards shot hits the post! Cafu stays cool enough to clear it up the pitch, but only as far as Irwin, who advances enough to force a corner off the legs of Mexes. 45+2 mins – GOAL!! Ronaldo’s corner is over the heads of everyone and ends up in the possession of Giggs on the far side. He passes to Bobby Charlton, stood near the penalty spot. The pass is slightly too hard and instead of shooting, he chips it up to knee height and moves it forward a yard as he is being closed down by three defenders. He then finds a semmingly nonexistent gap, turns and shoots, sending the ball crashing against the underside of the bar and into the goal with the last play of the first half! Half Time – United are dominant here, Roma might have taken their goal well, but there’s no denying that was their only chance. Desspite that, Manchester United might have found themselves frustrated if it wasn’t for Bobby Charlton, whose right foot has fired them into the lead. They just need to keep it tight and grab another goal or two to try and cement a quarter-final place. 47 mins – Half chance for Roma. Cafu steals it from Ronaldo and crosses to the edge of the area.
