What do stats and stars do, Exactly?
|
hi all.
we all read the konami explanations of the stats in edit mode but they are brief, sometimes vague and usually incomplete.
so please contribute your knowledge of what each of the stats do. of course, many stats have multiple effects in different situations(eg. technique allows some tricks when dribbling, improves first touch when trapping), so contribute as much as you know.
stars too, have interesting effects, so please contribute.
those stats and stars marked with * are those i understand the least, outside of the brief konami descriptions. if you can quantify what you say it would be even better
the stats are: *Attack *Defence Body balance *Stamina(what stats are reduced at low stamina?) Top speed Acceleration Response *Agility *Dribble acc. Dribble speed Short pass acc. Short pass speed *Long pass acc. Long pass speed Shot acc. Shot power *Shot technique Free kick accuracy *Swerve Header *Jump(how much height does jumping add?) *Technique *Aggression *Mentality Goal keeping skills *Team work ability *Condition Weak foot acc Weak foot frequency Injury
the stars are: *dribbling *tactical dribble *positioning *reaction *playmaking *passing *scoring *1-1 scoring *post player *df positioning *middle shooting *side *centre penalties *1-touch pass(does this affect 1-touch shots?) *outside marking sliding tackle covering d-line control penalty stopper 1-on-1 stopper long throw
thanks ya peace

Hi, this website explains what the attributes mean in greater detail than what Konami have explained in the game;
http://z4.invision free.com/PES_Player_Database/index.php?s=ad60884358362ee3b270f32b448d2227&showtopic=1829
You have to copy and paste that link but delete the space in between 'invision' and 'free.' It explains the attributes pretty well I think.
As for the special star stats, some are pretty self explanatory
dribbling - When the CPU is in control of the ball, the player favours dribbling (doesn't have an affect for player controlled players as far as I'm aware)
tactical dribble - When the CPU is in control of the ball, the player favours dribbling the ball past players, although I've heard that it also makes the CPU dribble to keep hold of the ball late in the game
positioning - Takes up better positions and will be able to escape his marker more effectively.
reaction - The player is more effective at making forward runs, but apparently also increases the chances of being caught offside
play making - When a player with the play making special ability is in possession of the ball, his team mates will take up better positions and make more intelligent runs. They are also supposedly better at making more penetrating passes
passing - Generally increases a players passing ability. Their final ball will be of a higher standard
scoring - Generally increases a players shooting abilities, but also increases the chances of a player being able to score from awkward positions.
1-1 scoring - Does what it says on the tin, increases the player's ability to score past an on-rushing goalkeeper, this includes increasing a player's effectiveness at performing chip shots
post player - Increases the players ability to hold onto the ball while his team mates join the attack, also, when the CPU is in control of the striker, they will drop back into midfield more often.
df positioning - Players with this star are better at timing their runs to break the offside trap
middle shooting - Improves the players ability to make more accurate (and possibly powerful) long range efforts
side - When the CPU is in control of a player with this special ability, they are more inclined to utilize the wings. I also heard that the players general play will improve when they move out to the wing, not sure whether that's true though
centre - The same as the 'side' special ability except the player favours playing in the middle of the pitch
penalties - Increases the player's ability to take penalty kicks effectively and more accurately, particularly when aiming at the top corners.
1-touch pass - I've always though that this star increases a players ability to perform accurate one touch passes, but apparently it only applies to first time shots.
outside - Increases the players ability to perform accurate shots with the outside of the boot
marking - Improves a players marking ability when the CPU controlled
sliding tackle - Increases a players ability at performing sliding tackles. Perhaps most significantly when the tackler is behind the attacker
covering - Players with this star will cover for team mates that are out of position and generally have better spacial awareness when defending
d-line control- Players with this star will benefit the whole defence as they marshal the back line effectively, making the players keep their shape and improves the effectiveness of the offside trap
penalty stopper - Only applies to goalkeepers, improves the 'keepers ability to save penalties
1-on-1 stopper - Only applies to goalkeepers, when in a one on one situation, the 'keeper will be better at getting some body part in the way of a shot
long throw - Allows the player to make longer and faster throw ins.

Thanks for the link, DS. Never seen that before.
Will help decide who to pick for the Draft Cup if it ever gets started. As well as Master League.

Attack: This determines how well a player positions himself in the box and getting in good shooting positions.
Defence: This determines how well a player positions himself defensively it can also have an effect on how often strikres track back.
Body Balance: This determines how strong a player is.
Stamina: A player who can last 90 minutes reguarly should probably get around an 81-83 these also tie in with other stats like mentality and aggression so a player with higher mentality means the run around more hence why they need more stamina.
Top Speed: How fast a player is.
Acceleration: How quickly a player reaches his top speed
Response: How quickly a player reacts to loose balls/passes.
Agility: How well a player can make sharper turns at great speed
Dribble Accuracy: How accurately a player can dribble.
Dribble Speed: How much speeed a player uses whilst dribbling e.g A player with DS:99 will be pretty much as fast running as he is with the ball.
Short Pass Accuracy: How accurate a players short passes are .
Short Pass Speed; This determines how hard a players passes are to intercept if a player has a high SPS his passes will be strong and hard to intercept.
Long Pass Accuracy: How accurate a players Long Passes,Crosses and Corner Kicks are.
Long Pass Speed: How fast a players crosses, long passes and corner kicks are.
Shot Accuracy: How accurate a player's shot are from an easy position.
Shot Power: How powerful a players shot is.
Shot Technique: An unusual one this it determines how well a player can keep his shot accuracy in situations like if it is an awkward angle or he is under pressure or if he wants to an acrobatic or trick shot. Here's a good example of ST.
Henry Backheel
Free Kick Accuracy: How accurate a player is from Free-Kicks
Swerve: How much curl a player gets on crosses and how well a player can dip it during free-kicks.
Header: How accurately a player heads the ball.
Jump: How high a player can jump
Technique: It affects how good a player's first touch is and how well he can perform certain tricks.
Aggression: This has nothing to do with how aggressive a player is so don't go giving Classic Roy Keane an aggression of 95 or he'll start making constant runs forwards leaving gaping holes in the defence the actual meaning of aggression is how often a player attacks(goood translating KONAMI).
Mentality: This determines if a player will give in if his team are losing in additon to this if a player has no stamina left but has a high mentality he'll still keep fighting and fighting and if a player his a low mentality he'll play much worse if his team is losing or he is out of tsmina.
Goalkeeping Skills: This determines how well a goalkeeper catches the ball and holds onto those really hard shots.
Team Work: Now this is probably the most complicated attribute if one player in the team has a high teamwork he can do no damage at all say I have the ball with Xabi Alonso who has a teamwork of 88 and Gerrard who has a team work of 86 is running down the wing both of them have a high TW so Gerrard wil lrun in a such way that it that when Xabi make's a pass he will no where where its going.alsAnotherin genius thought by KONAMI was that players who are the same nationality have a better teamwork understanding between each other .
Condition/Fitness: The average should be 7 seeing as fatigue in ML mode is ridiculous 8 should be given to players who can play most games in a season 6 should be given to players with average/belove avereage fitness 5 should be given to very unfit players nything below should be given to players who can't play 2 games in a row.
Weak Foot Accuracy:
WFA: 1&2 The player is so dreadfully awful with his weak foot its unbeliavable he is very poor and is considerably worse with it.
WFA: 3 The player is quite alot below average with his weaker foot but is not dreadfully awful.
WFA: 4 The player is below average with his weaker foot.
WFA: 5 Average.
very good with his weaker foot.
WFA: 7 The player is excellent with his weaker foot and there is little difference between the two.
WFA: 8 The player is two footed.

re: What do stats and stars do, Exactly?

thanks pansonic and david silva
i just read the piggyback interactive one, but it still doesn't seem complete.
using pansonic's and david silva's input, here's my thoughts. i'll separate my input into the different stats and stars
i play the game a lot as a computer gamer, less as a football fanatic, so my perspectives are understandably different. i usually play one-off exhibition games or training
i found this other link which gives some explanation: http://guides.gamepressure.com/worldsoccerwinningeleven9/guide.asp?ID=638
all this is for winning eleven 2008
stats: *Attack -it seems to give better positioning off the ball, when closer to goal, but not certain -i believe it resists Pressure('X') from defenders better -i believe it makes the player more sensitive and technical in really close situations the nearer he is to the opponent's goal, which allows him to retain possession even when tackled or collided with without fouling -i'm not sure what effect it has when you shield ball(stop ball and put body between ball and marker), but i think it helps your chances to get past the marker when you hold R1 and the direction of the marker. //i imagine attack as a circle of influence around my player in an attacking position, where is the player is the magnet for the ball
*Defence -i believe it puts more Pressure('X') on the dribbler, so it's harder for him to take a clean shot(shots got haywire), his dribble accuracy is reduced more, and he is slowed down more. -i believe it makes the player more sensitive and technical in really close situations the further he is from the opponent's goal, which allows him to obtain possession more often after tackling or collisions without fouling //i imagine defense as a circle of influence around my player in an defensive position, where is the player is the magnet for the ball -increases 'magnetism' of slides -reduces time for the player to get back on his feet after a slide -increases 'magnetism' of tackles -increases the speed of the tackle -probably makes the player less likely to be nutmegged
Body balance -i believe this is the resistance/strength met when you collide with that player's body. the player with less strength is slowed down and may lose balance(stumbling). //so when chasing down a man, under these thoughts, defense helps to slow him down when you pressure('X') him from some range, and then, when you collide with him, body balance is checked to power him off the ball. which is why you can pressure adriano to make bad shots, but it's near impossible to chase him down from behind.
*Stamina -i agree that ~81-83 is needed to consistently last 90 minutes -i'm sure that stamina gauge has no effect when at least half full. past half full, top speed, acceleration, agility drop. body balance and response probably drop. i'm not sure what else drops.
Top speed -just top speed
Acceleration -faster burst of speed from stop ball position, or when holding L1+R1 for turning while dashing, or suddenly dashing while dribbling
Response -response time to loose balls and normal and through passes
*Agility -faster animations for pass, 1-touch pass, 1-touch shot, and moving the body around the ball(eg. when changing directions on dribble)
*Dribble acc. -how often the player contacts the ball and gets to perform input commands while dribbling(kick far, dash, normal, slow, controlled) -how close the ball sticks to the feet generally while dribbling
Dribble speed -higher dribble speed means less difference between top speed and actual speed while dribbling
Short pass acc. -i think the game factors into account all players speeds and reactions and then knows a 'perfect pass' to every direction for the pass to be completed(not intercepted). i think short pass accuracy allows a pass closer to this 'perfect pass'.
Short pass speed -i'm unsure. does this mean the player passes faster, or the player passes at the most appropriate speed for the pass to be completed?
*Long pass acc. -same as short pass accuracy i think, but for long pass
Long pass speed -same query as for short pass speed
Shot acc. -makes the shot more likely to be on target and at the corners/sides of the goal if aimed in those directions. -i'm not sure if it helps to produce a better, cleaner shot when under pressure -probably makes chip shots more accurate(i wouldn't know, i don't chip )
Shot power -makes the shot faster
*Shot technique -unlocks different shots at higher shot technique -higher shot accuracy from bad angles, even with the same type of shot as a player with lower shot technique -more often hits cleaner shots when under pressure -makes chip shots more accurate
Free kick accuracy -probably exactly what it says
*Swerve -helps dipping the ball after clearing the wall for f.k. -helps curling the ball for f.k. //does anyone know how to curl the ball deliberately apart from f.k., for shots or crosses?
Header -accuracy of header -does high Header unlock new header animations? //does Header affect the Power of the header?(what affects the Power of the header?)
*Jump -probably adds height to determining aerial battles, but i don't know how much //would a 160cm 99 Jump defender beat crouch? -the keeper jumps further for jumping saves
*Technique -makes first touch closer when moving while trapping -more likely to be able to stop the ball dead using R2 trapping -reduces chance of marseille roulette screwing up -it seems to unlock moves when shielding ball and holding R1 and directions towards the marker(eg. nutmeg and run past) -probably increases chance of successful nutmeg(R2 back and front) //does it help in shooting?
*Aggression -how often the player will make forward runs when off the ball -how far the player will push up when off the ball
*Mentality -stats drop less at low stamina -stats increase(or decrease less?) when the scoreline favours the opponent -possibly makes the team's stats increase(or decrease less?) when the scoreline favours the opponent when the player is the captain -possibly more resistant to Pressure('X') and more able to make clean shots under pressure
Goal keeping skills -probably catches the ball more often rather than punching away //i don't know what else it does, but it probably does more
*Team work ability -when two players have good teamwork between them(a value based of both players teamwork and nationality), the player being passed to reacts faster to normal or through passes. //i don't know what else it does, but i'm sure it does more
*Condition -The average should be 7 //is there any effect for one-off games?
Weak foot acc Weak foot frequency Injury
*dribbling //i suspect there is some effect when human-controlled
*tactical dribble //i suspect there is some effect when human-controlled
*positioning -the player positions himself better to receive passes and make runs //does it help in midfield or defensive play?
*reaction -the player makes forward runs much more often
*playmaking -it has been claimed to make the player being passed to better at collecting and receiving the ball //other players probably get increased top speed, acceleration, response, agility, technique momentarily after the player with playmaking * passes -it has been claimed to make other players position themselves better for passes and for forward runs //other players probably get some form of the positioning * and/or df positioning * when the player with playmaking has possession of the ball
*passing -it has been claimed to create more goal-scoring opportunities with passes //i don't know what this means -probably increases short pass accuracy and long pass accuracy -it has been claimed to make passes easier for the receiving player to control //probably increases the receiving player's technique -it has been claimed to increase the receiving player's agility momentarily -it has been claimed that when a player with [i]passing */i] is in possession of the ball, other players position themselves better to receive passes. i'm actually inclined to believe this.
*scoring -probably increases shot accuracy more the closer the player is to the opponent's goal -possibly physical stats increase more the closer the player is to the opponent's goal
*1-1 scoring -increases accuracy when chipping -probably increases shot accuracy when the only other player goalward is the keeper
*post player -greatly increases the player's ability to hold the ball when performing shield ball and pushing back against the marker(stop ball and place body between marker and ball and hold R1 and direction of the marker) //probably greater effect the closer to the opponent's goal -probably increases the player's ability to hold the ball when performing shield ball(stop ball and place body between marker and ball) //probably greater effect the closer to the opponent's goal -it has been claimed to make the player better at receiving high balls //i'm guessing that body balance increases when there is a high ball aimed at the player -it has been claimed to make short pass accuracy better closer to the opponent's goal
*df positioning -positions more precisely at the line of the last man to beat the offside trap
*middle shooting -probably shot accuracy and shot power increase ~25-35m from goal
*side -tendency to move to sides -possibly stats increase at the flanks
*centre -tendency to move to centre -possibly stats increase at the centre(not the midfield, but around the area connecting the two goals)
penalties -more shot accuracy during penalties -better at shooting at the corners during penalties
*1-touch pass -probably increased shot accuracy and shot power and shot technique during 1-touch shots -possibly unlocks 1-touch shot animations
*outside -increases shot accuracy with the outside foot //i think there must be some effect on passes and dribble moves with the outside foot, but i don't know them
marking
sliding tackle -reduces chance of fouls/cards when sliding, especially from behind -increases chance of getting the ball when sliding, especially from behind
covering
d-line control -makes the backline move more as a unit, so it helps to perform better offside traps
penalty stopper -probably better at saving penalties when guessing the right direction
1-on-1 stopper -probably better at stopping 1-on-1's //i don't know how
long throw
thanks for reading. sorry for the long text. hope we can all share input

I enjoyed reading that siowy. It looks like your putting a lot of thought into this.
Another thing for the Teamwork stat; I think it makes players make more intelligent runs when controlled by the comp, or that they make runs towards space around you, if you are under pressure.
