The story starts with the sacking of Kevin Keegan as Newcastle boss just 6 months into his reign...

Newcastle chairman Chris Mort made the announcement this morning in a press conference live on SkySports News, alongside Newcastle owner Mike Ashley.

Chris Mort, Newcastle chairman: It is with regret today that we announce a parting of ways between Newcastle United football club and its first team manager, Kevin Keegan. Kevin's contract has been terminated by mutual consent, and on behalf of the club I would like to thank him for the effort he went to during his short second stint here.

The club felt that the team's poor results in the second half of the season were not acceptable for a club of this size, and now that we are safe from relegation we would like to concentrate on finding a new manager to take this club forwards next season.

Garry O'Toole, The Newcastle Times: Why exactly have the club decided to part ways with Keegan at this stage of the season, particularly as you had promised to give him time and resources to turn the clubs fortunes around when you hired him in January?

We felt that now relegation has been made a mathematical impossibility, we should look to bring in a new man so that he has time to implement changes he wants to do ready for next season. Mike, I, and every member of the board of directors felt that some of the performances and results of late have been unacceptable.

John McGuire, The Times: Do the board of directors have any managers on a shortlist to take over at the club?

Mike Ashley, Newcastle owner: Me and Chris have a few names in mind, and we will be contacting them with a view to installing a new man as soon as the season ends. We want to make this club great, and we require a manager who shares these ambitions.

Helen Bagsworth, BBC: Is Alan Shearer one of the shortlisted managers?

The club would prefer not to comment on speculation just at the moment. We still have two games to play this season and we expect certain players to be playing for their future at the club given recent form. Nigel Pearson will be put in temporary charge of first team affairs.

I'm going to register the decent Spurs and Newc players to realistic teams to represent them being transferred away, like Berbatov to Man U, Owen to Man City, Defoe to Villa etc.

---'Hi Mike, thanks for coming to see me' said Chris Mort, standing to shake the hand of his employer. 'I was hoping we could discuss some of the potential candidates for the manager's job.'
---'Ah yes, good stuff. How many do we have short listed?'
---'We've got it down to 4 preferred choices, and we've been in contact with them and they seem keen.' Said Mort, reaching inside his desk drawer to retrieve a document. 'Please, have a read of this'.
---'Thanks.' Said Ashley, taking the document.

As he perused the document, Mike Ashley's face remained as passively emotionless as if he were eating his way through a whole pack of pop tarts as he sat alone, naked in his 16-bedroom mansion.
---'Hmmm…' mused Ashley, as Chris Mort looked on apprehensively.
---'So we have on this list Didier Deschamps, Steve McLaren, Alan Shearer, and Juande Ramos who Tottenham sacked the other day…'
---'My gut instinct is Shearer' said Ashley decisively, after staring into space for some time. 'I think we might have made a mistake appointing Keegan over him in January, and if we didn't appoint him, the new boss would just have his presence hanging over him...'
---'Yes, Shearer would be my first choice too.' Said Mort. 'I shall contact him first thing in the morning'.
---'Thank you Chris' said Mike Ashley, standing slowly.
---'Good night sir.'

Will Alan Shearer answer the Geordie nations call to arms?
