Michael Fish becomes first signing for new Newcastle United manager

Australian centre-back Mikey Fish has been signed from Juventus in a deal worth £4.2m
The Nuggy Young era has begun with the signing of 29-year-old Australian centre-back Michael Fish this morning. The experienced stopper, who played for Juventus, Chelsea, Auxerre, Empoli and Melbourne Victory prior to joining Newcastle, has signed a 3 year contract worth an estimated £45k per week at St James'.

Newcastle boss Nuggy Young is said to be delighted with the capture of a player he regards as:

'...among the best centre halves in the world. He showed in his time at Chelsea what a quality, quality player he is, and I still believe he can cut it in the Premiership.'

The last two years of Fish's career have been dogged by injury, poor form and fallings out with managers, leading many to believe a player who was in the team of the tournament at the 2006 world cup, is past his best.

Michael Fish, seen here leaving Newcastle's training ground after a medical
Fish left Chelsea for Juventus in acrimonious circumstances this January, with the 53-times-capped defender citing 'irreconsilable differences' with Chelsea manager Avram Grant the reason for his departure. He fell out with another boss, this time his mentor and close friend Claudio Ranieri, at Juventus after being dropped to the bench in favour of Giorgio Chiellini.

Young however, is unfazed by the centre back's apparant ill temperament:

'He is a footballer who just wants to play regularly, and rightly so. Until this last year, there had never been any problems with his attitude, so I expect it was just mitigating circumstances that caused his recent discipline troubles. I have full confidence in Michael, his temperament as well as his abilities, and I hope that he will add some experience and quality to our backline.'

'I also feel that he represented a real bargain at £4.2m, and that he will prove to be a superb investment for this football club.'

Fish had this to say regarding his move to Tyneside:

'I'm delighted to come back to the Premiership, and I hope with Newcastle I can rediscover my best form. The last two years or so have been tough for me, but I feel they have made me a stronger player mentally and I am ready to fight for a starting place and put myself out to win something with this club.'

'Talking with the manager, I was inspired by his ambitions for the club. I had offers from France, Germany and Spain, but I've opted to come here because I see something coming that is really worth being part of. I want to be among the group of players that brings success to this club.'

Fish will have to displace the likes of Claudio Cacapa, Steven Taylor and David Rozehnal from Newcastle's starting lineup in order to get a game.

Newcastle United's Transfer activity - June 2008

The month of June has seen Nuggy Young removing deadwood from his squad and bringing in, amongst others, Michael Fish
Following Michael Fish to St James' Park were Wolves striker Jason Clarke, Liverpool fullback Shaun Hogan, Birmingham City goalkeeper Boyd Dills and Rangers' highly rated defender Ross Dickie. Departing Newcastle were renowned trouble-maker Joey Barton, Shola Ameobi, young goalkeeper Fraser Forster as well as defenders Peter Ramage, Steven Carr and Abdoulaye Faye.

      June 2008 - Players IN:
        Michael Fish CB Juventus £4.2m
        Jason Clarke CF Wolverhampton £2.1m
        Shaun Hogan SB Liverpool Undisc.
Boyd Dills GK Birmingham City Part Ex. [Barton]
        Ross Dickie SB Rangers £5.6m
      June 2008 - Players OUT:
        Fraser Forster GK Stoke Undisc.
Peter Ramage CB West Brom £1.1m
Joey Barton CMF Birmingham City £4m plus Dills
        Shola Ameobi CF Fulham £3.3m
Abdoulaye Faye DMF Paris St Germain Undisc.
        Steven Carr SB Portsmouth £2.3m
The departure of Abdoulaye Faye has been met with dismay in some quarters, after some solid performances from the midfielder-cum-defender made him a cult favourite with fans. However, Nuggy Young has said the price offered by PSG was too good to turn down, and that Faye was keen to move to France in order to get European football.

The departures of Joey Barton, Shola Ameobi and Steven Carr are seen as good bits of business by Newcastle supporters, in particular Barton, who's disciplinary problems have made him very unpopular amongst the fans.

Promising youngster Jason Clarke joined from Wolves following a good season in the Championship, and Shaun Hogan has made the short move from Merseyside to Tyneside in search of regular games. Highly-rated goalkeeper, Boyd Dills, comes to St James' as part of the deal which took Joey Barton to Birmingham City, and Newcastle beat off a host of other suitors to prise Scotland international defender Ross Dickie away from Glasgow Rangers.

...Michael Fish

Following the Aussie defender's transfer from Juventus to NUFC, we take a closer look at Mikey Fish's career to date.
Australian defender Michael Fish is widely regarded as one of the finest players to ever emerge from down under. Fish was born in Hobart, Tasmania to parents of English descent, and inherited his father's passion for soccer and for English team Chelsea FC. As a boy, Fish displayed a great deal of potential playing as a midfielder, and his set-piece taking in particular earned him rave reviews. He was brought into the youth set-up of now A-League team Melbourne Victory and moved swiftly through the ranks, making his first team bow at the tender age of 16.

It wasn't long before clubs in Europe became alerted to Fish's ability, but he resisted several attempts to lure him to Europe so that he could finish his education in Australia while carrying on playing for Melbourne.

By the age of 20, Fish had finished school and it was clear he had sufficient ability to make a career in soccer. He joined Italian Serie B side Empoli in 1999 alongside fellow Aussie Marco Bresciano, and like his countryman, impressed pundits and fans alike. His height and physical presence meant he was often employed in defence rather than his preferred midfield role, and Fish made the position his own with some commanding displays.

After Empoli missed out on promotion in 2001, Fish decided it was time to move on, and requested a transfer. Several clubs in Italy were interested, but Fish opted to move to French Ligue 1 outfit Auxerre for the 2001-2002 season, commanding a transfer fee thought to be in the region of £800k. Fish's reputation grew in France, and the young defender put in some superb displays on his way to winning the award for best young player in the league.

By this time, most top clubs across Europe were monitoring Fish. In summer 2002, a bidding war ensued as several big clubs vyed for his signature. Lyon, Marseille, AS Roma, Liverpool and Bayern Munich were all thought to have made bids for Auxerre's star player, and Fish looked all set to move to the Bundesliga after agreeing terms with Bayern. However, an eleventh hour bid from Chelsea derailed the transfer - Fish was desperate to join the club he had loved and supported since childhood. Despite agreeing to play for a lower wage than he would have for any other of his suitors, Fish joined Chelsea in August 2002 for a fee of £6.1m.

First team chances were limited for Fish in his first season at Stamford Bridge, and he had a long term metatarsal injury during the season. It was thought that Chelsea would offload this seemingly wasted signing in the summer, but the young Aussie pleaded with then Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri to give him a second chance.

Fish showed drastic improvement in pre-season training, and by October, had forced his way into Chelsea's starting lineup. Some solid displays from the now 24-year-old centre half helped Chelsea to a commendable 2nd place finish in the premiership and to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovic brought in Jose Mourinho to replace Claudio Ranieri in the summer of 2004, and it was rumoured Fish was very unhappy at the decision to axe the man who had given him a second chance at the club, and at the fact that Mourinho was bringing in so many of his old players to fill positions in the squad. However, this doubt quickly evaporated, and Fish formed a good working relationship with Mourinho and most his new signings.

In Chelsea's Premier League winning campaign of 2005, Fish played a key role despite not playing as many games as the previous year due to injury. Fish is often quoted as saying that lifting that trophy with John Terry as they paraded around London on an open-topped bus following the league victory is the proudest moment of his career to date.

Fish again was a pivotal part of Chelsea's miserly defence that saw them retain their Premiership crown in 2006, and he was voted into the Premierleague team of the season for the first time. He also represented Australia at the 2006 world cup, and earned rave reviews for his performances, and a free kick which was a contender for goal of the tournament.

Michael Fish playing for Australia at World Cup 06
In 2006-2007, when Chelsea surrendered their crown to Manchester United, Fish missed a large chunk of the season with a recerring thigh injury, and eventually had to have an operation in February. Fish made his comeback from injury in March, but the injury returned again in the final game of the season when Fish had to be stretchered off the field.

Fish's injury woes kept him out of the Chelsea side at the start of the 2007-2008 season, and he was rumoured to be wracked with guilt that he couldn't be on the field to help the pressure Jose Mourinho was feeling. Fish was thought to be furious following Mourinho's sacking, and like his close friend in the squad, Didier Drogba, outline his intentions to leave at the end of that season.

However, new boss Avram Grant decided that the unfit and out-of-form centre half was surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, and put Fish up for sale in January. A distraught Michael Fish eventually agreed to leave the club he had supported since boy-hood to link up with his mentor, Claudio Ranieri, at Juventus, for a fee of around £6.5m.

Things didn't go according to plan in Italy's top flight for Fish, and despite getting a run in the team for a few weeks, Giorgio Chiellini's return to fitness ousted the Aussie from Juve's eleven. Fish was very unhappy at spending games sat on the substitutes bench, and had a falling out with head-coach Ranieri.

Fish endured a torrid time in his 6 months in Turin.
Following weeks of speculation towards the end of the season, Juventus confirmed that the now 29-year-old Michael Fish would indeed be leaving the club. Few clubs were willing to take a chance on a player who had not played regularly in over two seasons and had had a lot of injury problems and disagreements with managers, but Newcastle offered Fish a second chance in the English Premier League.

After lengthy negotiations, 53-times-capped centre back Michael Fish joined Newcastle United for a fee of £4.2m in June 2008.

Who else could be coming to Newcastle?
And who is leaving?
And will Nuggy Young live to regret putting his faith in Michael Fish?!

You stay classy, Neoseeker.

Nuggy Young's wishlist for players

The NUFC boss identifies his transfer targets for the rest of the window, and emails them to chairman Chris Mort to find out if they are plausible.

quote

    GOALKEEPERS:
      PLAYER CLUB FEE
      Antii Niemi Fulham £6m
      Jussi Jaaskeleinen Bolton £8m
      Ben Foster Man Utd £5m
      Andreas Isaksson Man City £3m
      Gomes PSV £8m
      Yohann Pele Le Mans £6m
      Robert Holton Celtic £4m
      Bryn Donut Anderlecht £2m
I feel we require at least one new goalkeeper in addition to Boyd Dills. Shay Given is being consistently linked with Manchester City and appears to want to leave, while I feel Steve Harper, despite being here for so long, doesn't aid the squad in any real way and could be allowed to leave.
-------------------
    CENTRE BACKS:
      PLAYER CLUB FEE
      Gabriel Milito Barcelona £12m
      John Heitinga Ajax £8m
      Anton Ferdinand West Ham £6m
      Robert Huth Middlesbrough £7m
      Lucio Bayern Munich £11m
      Ronald Zubar Marseille £7m
      Gladstone Sporting £6m
      Gary Cahill Aston Villa £3m
      Curtis Davies Aston Villa £8m
      Younes Kaboul Tottenham £5m
      Christian Samba Blackburn £5m
      Antonio Barragan Deportivo £4m
      Steven Price Liverpool £8m
      Alan Kane Lazio £7m
      Matthew Doyle Sunderland £4m
      Toby Idris Fiorentina £7m
      Andrew Coates Portsmouth £8m
While Michael Fish and Steven Taylor possess enough quality to hold down a regular place in the side, the rest of the squad's centre backs are not good enough for the club. The fact that we have already sold Peter Ramage and Abdoulaye Faye, combined with Michael Fish's apparant susceptibility to injury, I feel that centre back is a position we should be looking to bring in two, maybe three, players in.
-------------------
    FULL BACKS:
      PLAYER CLUB FEE
      Maicon Inter £10m
      Daniel Alves Sevilla £14m
      Adriano C.C. Sevilla £11m
      Rafinha Schalke £7m
      Marcellus Jansen Bayern Munich £8m
      Bernard Mendy PSG £4m
      Jeremy Matheiu Toulouse £6m
Asier Del Horno Athletic Club £5m
      Marek Jankulovski AC Milan £6m
      Bacary Sagna Arsenal £9m
      Ezequiel Giannis Real Madrid £9m
      Daryll Williams Everton £6m
      Phillip Rees West Ham £4m
With the arrivals of Ross Dickie and Shaun Hogan last month, fullback is not a position that needs urgent reinforcement. However, Steven Carr's leaving and the fact that Abib Beye and Jose Enrique seem to have failed to settle at St James' mean that we may need to bring in one or two more to make up the numbers should any of the aforementioned players depart.
-------------------
    CENTRAL MIDFIELDERS:
      PLAYER CLUB FEE
      Steve Sidwell Chelsea £6m
      Kevin Nolan Bolton £6m
      Christian Poulsen Sevilla £7m
      Lassana Diarra Portsmouth £10m
      Mikael Arteta Everton £15m
      Sunny Valencia £6m
      Rasmus Lindgren Groningen £5m
      Kevin-Prince Boateng Tottenham £8m
      Javi Martinez Atheltic Club £9m
      Nigel Reo-Coker Aston Villa £12m
      Claude Makelele Chelsea £3m
      David Albelda Valencia £1m
      Tiago Juventus £6m
      Sergio Almiron Monaco £7m
      Jack Sissins Man Utd £10m
      David Russell Man City £7m
      Wayne Henry Chelsea £3m
Aaron van den Aker Inter £14m
      Josef Koscinski Wisla Krakow £5m
      Greg Surtees Celtic £6m
      Taku Mudzongo HSV £8m
      Alan Jennings Southampton £2m
      Matias Sanchez Benfica £5m
I feel that central midfield is perhaps the area that needs the most strengthening. I am not a huge fan of any of the midfielders currently at the club, with the exception of Max Derpatovski who has just returned from his loan out. We should be looking to bring in about 4 bodies, dependant on departures obviously.
-------------------
    WINGERS:
      PLAYER CLUB FEE
      Arjen Robben Real Madrid £18m
      Vicente Valencia £8m
      Valon Behrami Lazio £5m
      Jerome Rothen PSG £3m
      David Bentley Blackburn £10m
      Stewart Downing Middlesbrough £9m
      Aaron Lennon Tottenham £12m
      Shaun Wright-Philips Chelsea £14m
      Steven Pienaar Everton £6m
      Mauro Camoranesi Juventus £6m
      Rodrigo Taddei AS Roma £5m
      Mancini AS Roma £15m
      Simao Sabrosa Atl. Madrid £12m
      Ricardo Quaresma Porto £20m
      David Odonkor Real Betis £10m
      Theo Walcott Arsenal £8m
      Jaime Queralt Tottenham £5m
      Jay Gordon Man Utd £16m
      Ben Reeve Blackburn £6m
      Declan Barry Marseille £9m
      Rakim Alam Lyon £12m
      Stefan Koka Ajax £5m
      Tim Edgington Wigan £6m
Again, I am not a particular fan of any of the wingers in our squad (except Charles N'Zogbia and perhaps James Milner), so I will be looking to move people on. I am keen to bring in players that are capable of running the flanks, since I plan on using tactics that utilise the wings effectively.
-------------------
    STRIKERS:
      PLAYER CLUB FEE
      Amauri Palermo £13m
      Adrian Mutu Fiorentina £16m
      Cristiano Lucarelli Parma £5m
      Luis Fabiano Sevilla £10m
      Alexandr Kerzahkov Sevilla £8m
      Klaas Jan Huntelaar Ajax £12m
      Jefferson Farfan PSV £7m
      Louis Saha Man Utd £6m
      Dean Ashton West Ham £8m
      Robbie Keane Tottenham £10m
      John Daal Tomasson Villarreal £6m
      Adriano Inter £15m
      Lukas Podolski Bayern Munich £12m
      Roque Santa Cruz Blackburn £8m
      Peter Crouch Liverpool £7m
      James Beattie Sheffield Utd £4m
      Darren Bent Tottenham £10m
      Nathan Wells Lazio £7m
      Michael Sweeney Juventus £11m
      Eric Flynn Liverpool £5m
      Joel Gaffney West Brom £5m
      Nico Di Maria Juventus £9m
      Andre Porto £8m
      Alex Stewart Arsenal £11m
The strike force is one area of the squad where I feel we require little strengthening, especially after the arrival of Jason Clarke. I feel Michael Owen, Oba Martins, Mark Viduka and Andy Carroll are all top class players whom I would like to keep at the club. However, all of them are persistently being linked with moves away, and the high transfer fees they would likely command should be taken into account. If they were to leave, then we will have to dip into the market for extra strikers.

Newcastle United's Transfer activity - July 2008 Part 1/2

Nuggy Young continues to reshape his squad as mid-July approaches
The big story of the last two weeks was the transfer of Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins from Newcastle United to Arsenal for an undisclosed fee, estimated to around £20m. Another big-name departure from St James' saw long serving goalkeeper Shay Given complete his protracted move to Manchester City for a fee in excess of £10m. Following Given and Martins out the door at Newcastle were defenders David Rozehnal and Geremi, and midfielders Emre and James Troisi.

It wasn't all players out for Newcastle though, in a very busy fortnight for the club. England internationals Nathan Wells and Steve Price arrived from Lazio and Liverpool respectively, while Celtic's Greg Surtees, Blackburn's Ben Reeve and Tottenham's highly rated playmaker Jaime Queralt all moved to the club too.

Martins and Given - two big name departures from St James' this week.
      July 2008 1/2 - Players IN:
        Steven Price CB Liverpool Undisc.
        Jaime Queralt AMF Tottenham £3.1m
        Nathan Wells CF Lazio £6.9m
        Greg Surtees CMF Celtic Undisc.
        Ben Reeve SMF Blackburn £5.4m
      July 2008 2/2 - Players OUT:
        Obafemi Martins CF Arsenal Undisc.
        David Rozehnal CB Zaragoza £4.2m
Emre Belozoglu CMF Atl. Madrid £5m
Shay Given GK Man City £10.3m
        Geremi DMF Middlesbrough £4m
        James Troisi AMF Reading £1.3m
Fans staged a protest at the club's training ground following the announcement of Oba Martins' and Shay Given's departures from the club, clearly unhappy that two of the side's star players had been sold. The general feeling amongst fans is that Nuggy Young is changing too much too quickly, and that the players he is bringing in are not of the same quality of those he is allowing to leave.

Even the arrivals of England international Steven Price and Newcastle old boy Nathan Wells were met with luke-warm receptions from the supporters, clearly still licking their wounds after Martins and Given leaving.

Also arriving were Celtic's former Newcastle player Greg Surtees, Blackburn's highly regarded England U21 winger Ben Reeve and Tottenham's Spanish schemer Jaime Queralt.

...Nathan Wells

Following Lazio and England striker Nathan Wells' return to Tyneside, we take a closer look at the powerful striker's career to date...
English striker Nathan Wells was born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in July 1981. From a young age, he displayed a great deal of potential both academically and with sport, particularly football. At school, he represented England for both football and rugby - a unique feat, but had his eventual profession chosen for him when Newcastle United inducted him into their youth academy at the age of 14.

Wells' tenacity, aggression and leadership, as well as goal scoring feats, aided his advancement through the ranks at NUFC, and he was playing in the reserves at the tender age of 17. He made his Newcastle bow in the League Cup in 1999 aged 18, coming on as a substitute against Tottenham and scoring.

Despite his obviously bright future, Wells failed to establish himself at St James' in any way and was soon seeking first team football elsewhere. In 2001, Newcastle agreed to loan the young striker out to Division One outfit Sheffield United, where he spent a very productive season scoring 13 goals in 22 appearances (9 of which were as a substitute). Wells also made his England U21 debut against Scotland in a rain soaked match, eventually notching up 19 U21 caps and scoring 10 goals.

Wells on his England U21 debut against Scotland in 2001
Both Wells and Sheffield United were keen to make the young striker's loan deal permanent at the end of the 2002 season, and the two clubs eventually agreed a fee of £800k. Wells continued his progress at Sheffield, scoring goals and putting in excellent performances in the next three years with the Blades, studying for a degree in Criminology at Sheffield University in the process. Wells' form earned him plenty of suitors from the English Premiership, but Wells was very loyal to Sheffield and its manager Neil Warnock, and this, combined with his desire to finish his university education, meant he turned down offers to teams such as Bolton, Birmingham City and Southampton.

Wells' finest season in Sheffield colours came in the team's promotion campaign of 2005-2006, when the strong forward delivered a total of 36 goals in the league alone, prompting many to label him the best player outside of the top division in England.

Again, scores of clubs came in for Wells both in January and in the summer of 2006, but he remained loyal to the club he had grown to love.

His immense run of form made the striker impossible for Sven Goran Erikkson to ignore on an international level, and Wells was involved in the full England for the first time in March of that year, and earned his first full cap in a friendly against Argentina in April, where he scored a brace to give his country the win.

Eriksson included Wells in his England squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, and following injuries to Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney, the Sheffield United striker was given a chance in the team.

Despite England's failure to get past the quarter final stages of the World Cup, Wells' performances at the tournament earned rave reviews from pundits and journalists alike, and he was regarded by many as England's best player at the tournament after his 3 goals.

Nathan Wells finally got his chance to shine in the Premier League with Sheffield United in the 2006-2007 season. Tragically for the striker though, a serious cruciate knee ligament injury just two games into the season meant he missed the entirity of the club's relegation campaign, and drifted into the international wilderness with England.

Following Neil Warnock's resignation as manager in summer 2007, Nathan Wells voiced his desire to leave the club, but there was no offers from the Premier League that matched The Blades' valuation of the striker - probably because of his lack of fitness over the last year.

An increasingly bitter Nathan Wells refused to sign a new contract at United, and this, combined with his again excellent form on his return to fitness, prompted Sheffield United boss Bryan Robson to declare the striker up for sale in January 2008.

Despite the interest from various Premiership teams, Wells opted to move abroad to play in Italy's Serie A with Rome giants Lazio. The striker commanded a transfer fee of only £1.6m due to his contract situation, and this deal proved to be a masterstroke by Lazio.

The now 26-year-old Englishman reignited Lazio's season, and with midfield support from Scottish international Alan Kane, formed a deadly strike partnership with Rolando Bianchi. Between them, the pair managed to score 30 goals in half a season, 16 of which came from Wells, and together forsibly hauled Lazio into a UEFA Cup position in the league.

Wells scored a splendid hattrick in Lazio's now legendary 5-0 demolition of AS Roma in the Rome derby
Wells' goalscoring exploits meant he forced his way back into the England setup for Fabio Capello's first games in charge, and the new England boss is known to be a huge admirer of the powerful forward.

Cash-strapped Lazio were again in financial troubles come summer 2008, and were forced to entertain the myriad of offers that came in from England for Nathan Wells. Manchester City, Bolton, Portsmouth, Everton and Liverpool were all keen to sign the England international, but Wells opted to return to his roots - with Newcastle United.

The day after his 27th birthday, Nathan Wells signed a lucrative four year deal at St James' after his £6.9m move to Tyneside.

Why is Nuggy letting so many of his top stars leave?
How will he spend all the money that he has now got in transfer fees?!
Will Nathan Wells finally be able to prove himself in England's top flight?

'Who the bloody hell knows?!', I hear you cry from an upstairs window.
