Things you love about Linux

What are some of the things you adore about Linux or your Linux distribution?

I thought that's a good question, because maybe someone can still learn a trick or two from someone else.

Anyway, the reason I actually thought of this, was because I wanted to install a new font yesterday. I had no idea how to do it, really. So I just went to look for a font first, and if it wasn't obvious from there, I'd just google it.

So I found a font I liked, it was zipped for Windows, so I downloaded the zip, hoping that it'd contain a file I could work with. So, I unzip the file and slocate the extension. It found all the fonts and I just added the new font to the same directory. That was all I needed to do. Hah. From glancing over the readme, it's apparently not quite that easy under Windows XD.

That just about covers it for me.

I love everything about Linux. The wide variety of customization, the inherently better security, the terminal allowing you to completely control your computer if you so desire, the learning curve, and the fact that it's community driven.

The stability, no blue screens, lockups, data loss, crashes, or temporary loss of any drivers for printers, video, etc. It just works and keeps on working.

No viruses to deal with.

The fact that it is free is another one that I like.

For me it is simply that Linux does what I ask it to do. If I say shut down, it does it right there. Windows can't offer that.

Unless you don't use the Start menu command and use a batch file like me.

Err, I don't quite understand. Windows shuts down for me too.

I think he is talking about a problem my mom's computer has. Sometimes when you press shutdown, an 'End Program' dialog box comes up, asking you to try to have the program quit normally, or to force the program to quit.

I avoid that with this batch command.

code
shutdown -s -f -t 00

The -f forces the computer to shutdown no matter what.

re: Things you love about Linux

Oz is right. Windows is aimed for a computer illiterate granny.

Shutdown.
Are you sure you want to shut down?
No Windows, I clicked shutdown for no damn reason at all.
You might lose your unsaved work.
I saved it you stupid bitch.
This program is not responding. Force closing it may cause problems. Do you want to force close?
Yes.
*shuts down*

Ever considered the fact that it might be incase you hit it accidently?

I'm not sure why you think "Windows is aimed for a computer illiterate granny" is an insult, its good to aim for a big market.
Why do you think MS is so damn rich and big? Because they make products who everyone can use, 90% of people don't give a shit about Linux because they can't use it. Not to mention that most of the software that people use is for Windows.

re: Things you love about Linux

M$ is so rich because it comes packaged with most laptops, people grew up using it, and don't like change.

Windows behaves how Microsoft likes it. Linux behaves however you want it. I know it's good for a company to aim for a big market. But I don't give a hell how their business is doing. With Linux you are in the driver seat of the car. In Windows you are in the passenger seat.

Plus, anyone who accidentally hits power button is failure.
