Overclocking Showcase Discussion

Several new developments, and possibly more, have arised. We'll probably discuss any changes publicly before they are made, but for clarity's sake, please read this for any changes before submitting an entry.

After a little discussion with Master of the VG, I've decided to change the criteria needed for entry so hopefully more people will participate. Before I go over the new criteria, I will say that the Showcase thread is to remain clean. All discussion relating to anything posted there should be posted in this thread. ALL Discussion relevant to the Showcase thread should be directed into this thread instead. The "Discuss your stable OC results here" thread is over a year old and at 16 pages, so this new thread is somewhat necessary for efficiency purposes.

The only thing to be posted in here should be discussion or ideas for the showcase. Actual submissions will be posted in the actual Showcase thread. Any posts other than submissions will be deleted from the Showcase as well as sloppy submissions that can't be fixed by a moderator(missing info or incorrect links).

The new criteria is as follows:
There will be three levels of stability that are recognized.
  • Stability: Verified Stable: (inclusion of a Prime or Orthos run in excess of 6 hours added to your screenshot of cpuz, superpi, and 3dmark 05)
  • Stability: Verified as Functional: (A link to an online submission of multiple(3+) runs of 3dmark 05, plus any other overlayed screenshot of cpuz, superpi, ect.. that you wish to include)
  • Stability: Unverified: (No online benchmark link, no other benches provided except for a screenshot of cpuz or other non-specified benchmarks that have run)

You may post your entries yourselves. There is no need to PM me so long as the thread remains clean. There is also no longer a need to post a screenshot that includes a Prime95 or an Orthos Beta window. However, a screenshot is still needed with at least a cpuz shot.

The whole idea I have here is not for each of us to show off our overclock...we have User System threads for that. The point is to develop somewhat of a database of information that new seekers, new overclockers, and guests can reference as a learning tool to gauge which hardware is capable of what kind of overclock and performance. Newer members or guests may not know about the User System threads and several new members come here based soley off of computer hardware and overclocking interests.

Parts of my original post/criteria are quoted below for reference of programs and links.

Also, if you manage to get a higher overclock on the same hardware after posting an entry you may still post again, though I suggest against posting 7 different entries each 15mhz from each other.

    So again:
  • Post your entry yourself
  • Include system specs as I have laid out in the original criteria(use my entry as a visual).
  • Include a screenshot of AT LEAST CPUz(cpu and memory tabs), include a link to an online 3DMark 05(run 3+ times) submission to reach the "Verified as Functional" level, and include the Prime/Orthos to get the Verified Stable rank.
  • The status of your stability verification depends on your inclusion of certain benchmarks. If you have questions, ask them here so you don't waste time on an incomplete entry that gets deleted.
  • Keep the Showcase thread clean!

    Regulars and Neo Members:
This applys to the regulars of the forum and any member that creates a User System thread:
If your Showcase entry reaches the Verified status, you will have the option to have this icon placed after your User System thread in the index:

If your Showcase entry reaches Verified as Functional, you will have the option to have this icon placed after your User System thread in the index:

If your Showcase entry reaches the Unverified status, you have the option to have this icon added next to your User System thread in the index:

For all levels of verification, including unverified, you have the option to have that level of verification noted as a thread caption to your User System thread.

Once your entry has been reviewed, you will be asked whether or not you wish to have one or both of these implemented to your thread in either the index or as a caption by myself or by Master of the VG, or by a future moderator who wishes to carry on this idea.

    Links and help:
    quote Original Post

OK, you have your loaded screenshot saved...what now?
Take a note from your BIOS of your RAM timings, CPU frequency, voltages(ram, cpu and chipset/northbridge), divider, and anything else you deem important(which will come into play later). Write them down as accuracy is important here because others will be viewing this as a form of learning...hopefully.

You will notice a portion on the entry about your comments. If you wish you can put anything you'd like to mention here but your cooling system specs should probably be included, too.

A sloppy entry, an incomplete entry, or a fraudulent entry will be rejected and I will respond with the reason via PM for your personal clarity.

    Prime95
    Orthos Beta
    3DMark 05
    SuperPi
    CPU-Z

    Help~
First things first...Prime95 does NOT test both cores while testing for stability, you need to tweak it a bit for it to do this.

To get Prime95 to run on both cores(ie. dual instances of prime):
First install prime95 and create a shortcut.
Right click the shortcut and go to properties. Then go to the target text box and add after what is there already
    code
    *space*-A0

Hit the spacebar and add -A0.

    Then rename that Shortcut Prime95-1

Create another shortcut for Prime95. Right click it and go to properties and then the target text box. Add after what is already there
    code
    *space*-A1

Press space bar and then type -, the letter A, and the number 1. Rename that shortcut Prime95-2.

Now when you start the testing for each of these you need to set the affinity for each core. Click the first session(shortcut) and set the affinity to core 0, then click the second session and set the affinity to core 1.

Run the tests for at least 6 hours...or 8. Prime95 will timestamp when it is stopped by YOU. If it fails, it will NOT contain a timestamp.

If all of that is too much trouble, you can use Orthos Beta which sets itself up for dual core automatically and it has an auto timer so it always timestamps and will even give you the time in which Orthos failed.

    Orthos Beta:
Uses the same source code as Prime95, but it has a much friendlier interface.

*For both Prime95 and Orthos Beta, use only 80% of your system memory for the testing...leave some for your OS. Do the math and alot the correct amount to each core to prevent serious harddrive caching.*

    To take a screenshot~

To capture the entire screen, press "PrtScrn" above the insert and delete keys. To capture the active window press Alt+PrtScrn. Go to your Paint program(MSPAINT) and then go to EDIT and then Paste. Then you can save the image as whatever name you want and upload it with Imageshack.us or photobucket.com to get the correct URL for your entry.

To get things rolling again, if all goes well I should have an entry in the showcase by the end of the day. Is anyone else working on one at all? KoL & A1's entries are looking kinda lonely.

    re: Overclocking Showcase Discussion

Cool. Good to see some participation. I've read my opening post a number of times to ensure clarity, and one thing that I feel I need to emphasize(not just to the regulars but to the overclocking community in general), is that this is NOT a comparison chart about who can get the best/highest overclock. This is meant to be a learning tool for new builders and prospective overclockers.

The aim isn't on the size of the overclock, the emphasis is on the overclock itself, and the settings, and the level of stability the person viewing your entry can hope to reach with that specific/similar hardware. All valid entries will be equally respectable for the sole purpose of complying with the projected vision set forth here. There is no winner or loser.

The medal icons in the Index are just my and Master of the VG's attempt to have the participants really put forth some serious effort into their entries to get the best sense of satisfaction that their entry was used in someone else's learning process.

    re: Overclocking Showcase Discussion

Well there's a long story behind this specific overclock for me. I'll spare the details for my system thread, but I just did some research by reading some reviews on my motherboard (including neo's) and finally learnt something new about it even though it was my first time actually wanting to learn something about it. It's not going to be a high oc by any means (i'll try for that another time) but it'll be uber helpful to beginers that have the same board as I do.

38 minutes to go until a 6 hour Orthos run. I'll shoot for more when I do my more agressive oc. Then i'll just run 3DMark and SuperPI and get something up in the forum.

Guys, i have just added my system to the thread...

The image tag didn't want to work, im not sure how they go on this forum, so i just put the link...

I need to get a few runs of 2005 done, then i will change it to the next level of stability.

Just edited it to make it tidier as well.
Let me know if anything needs to be changed.

Yeah, that is the form I'd like to see the entries in. I went ahead and changed your image link to the thumbnail. As long as the image url is provided, they can be edited into a thumbnail...with imageshack anyways. I'm not sure about other hosting sites.
    code
    [img link=http://picture.jpg]http://picture.th.jpg[/img]

For all the future entries, please get them to your desired level of stability in your first entry. This avoids unnecessary editing. Multiple entries are allowed when a noticeable or major change has been done while using the same hardware that was in the first entry(as demonstrated by Kings_of_Leon's two entries). If you change RAM or CPU, then enter as you normally would since a hardware change can render completely different results and warrants two different entries.

Can I have a link to a page that tells me how to overclock? I want to get this pice-o'-crap getting better than 1.9GHz.

Alright, now how do I get into my BIOS? And is a AMD Sempron 3500+ Even overclockable? Here is probibly the max it can pull that I've seen:

I know it sucks, that's why I want to overclock it, so, while I wait to get a better computer, I'll just get some performance out of it.

If your computer was made by a company sch as HP, Dell, Gateway etc, you cannot overclock.

Also, Coldfire, I like your background

If I get a C2Duo e4300 would I even be able to compete with those opterons in the showcase? Of will I just be obsolete?

    re: Overclocking Showcase Discussion

First off, it isn't a competition. You could enter a Pentium2 if you wanted. All that we're looking for is a stable overclock, a list of settings, and some sort of proof.

BTW, the C2D's are newer and faster than the Opterons in the Showcase so far.

hehe.. rofl... c2d being obselete in the presence of an Opteron...

Opteron's are lower and not as fast as the C2D range. Also, they sport lower cache's and i'm also pretty sure than some of them are single core; 160's and lower i believe..
