I'm on my third crew now and I've not really payed much attention to the goals till now. I've obviously noticed when it says goal complete, but this time around I'm actually looking at the goals that need to be done before I do them, and I've noticed that sometimes it says goal complete on the play screen even when it wasn't in my goals! Why is that?

I haven't noticed this. Maybe it gives you credit for completing any goal that will come up in the game even if you haven't found the book with that goal in it yet.

I have 6 books - do they all normally have 4 goals in? cos some of mine only have 2 goals in, I'm now wondering if more appear in the book after you complete something else?

I've just been through my goals books again and I've noticed that 'find all crewmates' and 'have fun in the thingy place' isn't in there anywhere yet it came up before with those goals complete! I must not be looking at the right thing or something !?!

Did you notice that some of the books have 2 pages? I didn't see that at first. You can leaf back and forth through the pages to see more goals. That's probably why you don't see certain ones. If the FAQs I've seen are correct, the goals about finding crewmates are in the first book.
