How Do I Setup Xbox Live?
|
Sorry if this has been posted before, but i couldn't be bothered going through all the old pages. I got my xbox about a week and a half ago, and needless to say, i'm itching to play online. Problem is, i don't know how to set it up. We have two computers at my house-the one up stairs (near my room, about 5 or 6 metres away from the xbox), and one downstairs (probably about 10-15metres away from the xbox). I am 95% sure we don't have wireless, and the little box thing that the internet runs from (no i don't know what it's called, modem or router or something i think) is at the downstairs computer. How do i set up my online, and roughly how much will it cost?
Sorry if i sound like a noob.

Do you have an Ethernet cord running from downstairs to the computer upstairs? If so, then just do the same thing with the Xbox 360. Connect one end of the Ethernet cord in your router downstairs, and then the other end into the back of your Xbox 360. If you don't have a cord running from downstairs into your upstairs computer, then you probably have a wireless network connection. All you have to do then is buy a wireless network adapter for your Xbox 360, which will pick up the wireless signal automatically. You can buy the official Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter for $100, or you could just buy one from a different company.

Your upstairs computer has internet right? Then you should have a cord running from the router that is downstairs somewhere. If not, then you must have a wireless network.
The cord might be running through the wall or something.

Well, are you talking about setting up your profile/linking it to your xbox account, or just getting the internet connection overall?

All you have to do is run an Ethernet cord from the back of your Xbox 360:

To a port on the back of your router:

How the cord gets to the ports is up to you though. Your parents may not want a cord going down the stairs.
Also, it's possible that your router does have wireless capabilities but you're just not taking advantage of them. If it has one or two antennas on the top of it, then its capable of creating a wireless network. Therefore, you could alternatively use a wireless adapter instead of running an Ethernet cord.

ok new problem, i figured out how to set it up, but the chord would have to go down the stairs and through some rooms to get to the router, is there any other way to do it?

Does your router have antennas? You could set up a wireless connection. Otherwise, it would probably be best to have the cord go through the wall. How does the upstairs computer reach the router? You could probably put the cord through the same way.

Just look at the cords coming out of the back of the router and see where they are going to. One should lead to your upstairs computer, possibly through the wall. I can't really help you find it since I'm not at your home lol.
