re: Story Of Your Season

Yeah, they do look like good players but I needed the cash and I had cover for those positions. Valdes is excellent, I didn't know how young he was, I thought he was in his 30's. How did Eto'o perform for you and what formation did you play? I sold Oleguer this season, can't get rid of that shit Sylvinho though.

re: Story Of Your Season

Yeha but the positions you covered with the signings were basically the ones you sold players in

I generally played a 4-5-1 first season:

Home:

GK

DR - DC - DC - DL

MC - MC - MC

AMR - - - - AML

FC

Away:

GK:

DR - DC - DC - DL

DMC

MR - MC - MC - ML

FC

Away the wingers had arrows forward...Eto'o and Henry rotated up front with Eto'o being player of the year and getting around 35 goals to Henry's 20-something, Bojan got a look in in the cup mainly. Another revelation was Yaya Toure, because pre-patch he's better going forward and is an MC not DMC primarily (which suits his preferred moves), he got like 10 league goals.

Kinda lost interest in the game during the second season though I did enjoy getting Van Nistelrooy (TR'd by request due to a fallout with Schuchster) for 4.7 mil, he was on fire at first as I switched to 4-4-2 so I could have the dream partnership of him and Henry, allbeit a few years too late.

Tbh there's a lot I'd do differently if I played as them again, the way I played worked better than it perhaps should have, and it was mainly the defence that made me almost unbeatable (started with no transfer budgets first window, so Barzagli cost me 22mil in Jan lol...still worth it).

re: Story Of Your Season

Yeah Barzagli's a rock in defence. RVN played terribly for xpronic, he was sold to Tottenham I think. Henry played very badly for me also, I started off rotating him with Eto'o but he just didn't score, Eto'o was amazing though. Xavi's been a great player for me, he's scored a few as well, mostly long range blasts.

Out of interest, how much did you get given to spend second season? As you can see, I got 117M.

re: Story Of Your Season

Heh, funnily enough, that's how much I'm buying Barzagli for in January - I play with no transfer budgets in first window too. How is Eto'o good for you guys, he's rubbish for me, he just waste opportunities and shoots from outside the area on numerous occasions. Thierry & Eidur up front is proving immense, Eidur has got a handful of assists with a passing attribute of 18 to boast about and Henry just feeds off this and puts goals away, away and away. Even Bojan is ahead in the pecking order before Eto'o. Valdes is good for you guys ? Man, what game am I playing ?! If it wasn't for me scoring so many goals, I may have picked up Valdes' dot on the screen and kicked him into Row Z ! £12m for Puyol ? I'd take it tbh, he's been playing at 6's whilst everybody is playing at 8's and 9's, making silly mistakes which Millito has to save his ass from time after time. Barzagli & Millito at the back

re: Story Of Your Season

Yeah, that's why I sold Puyol, Thuram was getting 7's and 8's every game whereas he was getting mainly 6's. I use Eto'o as a lone striker, target man and he runs onto the balls. He played brilliantly there. At the moment Baragli and Milito are my center backs, they're playing great. I've got a major problem though, a big midfield injury crisis. Fernandez, Messi, Ronaldinho and Rosina are all out, as well as Eto'o for 3 months. Henry played terribly for me, just couldn't finish.

re: Story Of Your Season

Ahh yes, I can see how that would work for Eto'o. Saying what I said previously, I must give him some credit for filling in when Messi is injured, he covers the AMR position so well, with an arrow supporting the forwards, that's where he's got the majority of his goals from for me. How is Fernandez playing, I know he's good but is he adequate backup for Barcelona ?

Edit: Yaya Toure is a machineeee.

re: Story Of Your Season

He was first choice left winger first season, he didn't play that badly but didn't play very well either. I think he's more suited to the AMC role. He's now backup to Xavi and Ronaldinho, he's more than good enough for back up. Fred's filled in for Eto'o quite nicely, he's managed to score 4 goals in one start and coming on as a substitute 5 times. Once was when Eto'o got injured. Here are my transfers so far:

here are xpronic's transfers:

re: Story Of Your Season

Sunderland AFC

..:: Season 2007-2008 ::..

I decided to take on a game as the manager of Sunderland, newly promoted to the premier league.
I knew it would be hard, i knew sometimes i would feel like crying, but it would, i hoped, turn out successful.
I took over the club, assessed my squad, and decided to make these changes, with players coming in, while others departed.

So with that all taken into account, i had to start planning for the season ahead of me, which was going to be a hard task, so i set my team instructions and played a flat 4-4-2, here are the instructions.

I decided to go the long passing way about it, as I had the big man Jones up there, he would be set as my target man, and his partner would mostly be Soldado.

All in all, i had a great premiership season, the only thing i was worried about at the end was the amount of goals we conceded, i obviously now know that i need to bolster my defence.

Here is how the premier league division finished up.

I was thrilled i achieved what the board wanted me to do at the start of the season in avoiding relegation, however, as we may have scored alot of goals, we let in alot, a very lot.
So that is a concern, all in all though a great season in the premier league, and we had some great games, but here, are, from the managers point of view, the top 3.

Number 1 game of the season, Reading VS Sunderland, The Madjeski Stadium, 19th January 2008

Number 2, Tottenham Hotspur VS Sunderland, White Hart lane, 28th October 2007

Number 3, Sunderland VS Bolton Wanderers, Stadium Of Light, 16th January 2008

Those i feel, as manager the best games i had as my first season of Sunderland boss.
Hopefully there will be more where those came from.

--------------------

And after such a good premier division season, here are the premier division team of the year and the English awards.

Premier Division team of the year.

The English Awards

After looking at those awards, I then picked out who i thought had been my key players through the season, the ones that stood up and shone, and here they are.

Craig Gordon - GK

Yohan Gourcuff - AM RC

Kenwyne Jones - ST

Roberto Soldado - ST

All these players i feel really spurred the team on, helped us achieve what we did, and I will try my best to make the two on loan be back at the stadium of light again.

Now, lastly, the other competition winners.

League Cup - Manchester United

FA Cup - Chelsea

Community Shield - Chelsea

Uefa Champions League - Liverpool

Uefa Cup - Werder Bremen

In conclusion, these are my aims for next season:
  • Finish in the top 15
  • Concede less than 50 goals
  • Keep 5 clean sheets
  • Bring Gourcuff back on loan
  • Reach the 5th round of both League and FA Cup

Thank you for reading, its been a pleasure, but that was my first season as Sunderland manager.

PLaying as Arsenal atm after starting a new game last night, I played Diarra at right back and Sagna at left back for a game because Clichy was injured. My word...Diarra @ rb = win. Walcott scored 4 against AEK in the cl qualifier.

Just lost against Blackburn after Reid scored in the last three minutes to sink me 2-1. Damn. Bought Aguero and VDV, VDV's been shit, Aguero been decent. I'll likely to a post of my first season then a SOMS of my second once it's done

re: Story Of Your Season

Liverpool FC
Season 2007/08

My seasons expectations were to challenge for the title, but I didn't want to challenge i wanted to win it. I was given £20M in transfer funds, so I had to sell afew players to to gain extra funds, which i needed if we could mount a serious title bid.

Signings

I made some poor signings in my 1st season as Liverpool boss. Gasbarroni was too incomsistant throughout the season and I couldn't obtain work permits for both Cedrola and Guerrero. However, Palacio was a terrific signing, even if I did spend £10.75M on him. His pace caused defenders problems all season and he bagged a few goals to boot aswell. Samba was a bargin. He was a rock in defence throughout the season, very consistant and very cheap. Barzagli was the best signing of the lot. He has all the attributes of a superb centerback and he was extremely consistant, that showed in the amount of goals we conceded.

League Cup Result

I was fairly disappointed at this to be honest. We didn't play well and we didn't test Van Der Sar. If we could of beaten United I think we would of gone on to win it, but it wasn't to be and they deserved there win on the night.

FA Cup Result

Again Im fairly disappointed. The FA Cup was one of the cups i wanted to win in my 1st season. Chelsea did score a lucky goal when Lampard's shot was deflected in, but at the end of the day, we didn't take our chances and we lost.

Champions League Result

I was thrilled at this. Not only had we beaten United on the biggest stage in club football, but we had wipped the floor with them. They did get lucky through the Reina OG but we put that to the back of our minds and played them of the park.

Premiership Key Results

Some fantasic results there. I was especially thrilled witht the final result. I brought Voronin on in the 80th minute, expecting him to do nothing like he always does. But he suprised me by slotting home a goal in the last minute to win us a vital victory.

Premiership League Table

So close, yet so far from the title. We had won most of the battles of the 'big four', but kept drawing against lower league opposition. At the end of the day this cost us the title. But full credit to United, they just kept on winning. But we will be back next season and we will be as stronger than ever

Key Players

Ryan Babel

Ryan was a threat all season down the left flank. He provide quality balls in the box and set up many goals. He worked really well in tandom with F. Aurelio and caused confusion for the defence. My only criticism of him was that he didn't bag alot of goals, which i expect from him next season

Andrea Barzagli

Andrea was a rock at the back of an already solid defence. He provided a superb combanation with Jamie Carragher at the back and was always alive to any threats the opposition posed. He was the best buy in the Premiership in my opinion

Fernando Torres

What more can I say than goals, goals, goals. He was quality, his pace was a threat to any defence and his movement is the best in the league. He is one of our best dribblers and had a formidable partnership with Palacio up front. Totally world class.

Premiership Awards

Overall I feel my first season was a success. I had bought the two best signings of the league in Samba and Palacio and had won the Champions League. The board said that they expected better from me in the FA and League Cup, which I wish to improve upon next season. I also think we did really well in the Premiership and I want to go one better next season

re: Story Of Your Season

Jordan Brown starts World cup qualification with England. after a poor Euro 2008 that ended with a 1-0 defeat to Croatia in the quarter finals. It was touch and go whether or not Brown would still be England manager after the FA expectations of a semi final not being reached. The Fa seemed to trust Jordan that it was just a minor blip.

Brown was given a relatively easy group to qualify from.

Euro 2008 brought Switzerland and England together in the same group, which resulted in a 3-0 england win.

England are clear favorites to win the group, with Switzerland predicted for second.

England had set up a friendly with Ireland a few months ago and both sets of fans have been looking forward to the match for weeks now. This is the only friendly this weekend, as other countries chose to just rest and prepare for the opening game of qualification on Wednesday.

The game at Wembley didn't involve much chances from either team, which eventually ended with England coming out on top.
A first goal for Dean Ashton capped a poor performance from England, that any other day could have ended so differently.

re: Story Of Your Season

Hey everyone.

I've added a new section to the Football Manager 2008 portal, it's a story section. Bascially, as SOMS's are too long to put onto the portal, we'll be adding the best season reviews. If you take a look at xpronic's and Vincent's reviews, you'll see the sort of standard to aim for. If possible, when writing a review, could you please make the images thumbnails as they will fit onto the page. (If you're unsure about how to do a thumbnail, look here.) I am waiting for xpronic to resize his pictures as well as Vince. If Hogan and Eruption resize their pictures, I'll add them to the portal.

If you look into the story section, you'll see I've already added The Lynx 99's Man City story and the review I wrote.

If you think your story is up to scratch, or make a story that I miss, please PM me or one of the other portal staff which are listed here.

Thankyou.
