	Diary of a Proud Father (for one night only) Home 7:37pm September 22, 2010 I switched on the television, ITV 1 was my destination. My son, Jake Doyle who had been snapped up by Premier League big four club, Liverpool for £425,000 was travelling to Switzerland, no it wasn’t with school, he was 17 years old, by the way. No, it was with Liverpool football club, for the first time in my life I saw someone I knew on the television. On the Sony Bravia. I was met with Steve Ryder and Andy Townsend in the New Anfield studio doing a preview for the match. I had a deal with my son when he joined Farsley Celtic in three years – the first match he plays for a Premier League club, he would buy me a flash house. It would most likely to be in Liverpool, well now that he’s with Liverpool F.C. For the past two matches he hadn’t made the substitute bench, but it was compulsory to travel with the squad. But this time I was informed of my son’s participation via Steve Ryder and Andy Towsend. ”Tonight, Liverpool have fielded for the first time on their substitute bench, a young Jake Doyle from Yorkshire. He’s scored two goals in five matches for the reserves, so I think Rafa has found the right time to implement this teenager into his first squad that he’s reached the level of playing that Rafa expects his team to be in and what they can reach and this player is definitely physically capable of starting tonight but in such a big match scenario I don’t think he is mentally capable to start such a big match in the UEFA Champions League.” The moment Andy and Steve began talking about Jake in the studio I felt so proud to be his Dad. You aren’t adapted to feel emotions like this but with two of the best pundits in the business talking about my son like that. Comments like, ”He is very strong” and ”this player is definitely physically capable to play tonight.” just shows how good my son is to be respected this highly at his tender age of seventeen. His mental capacity probably couldn’t take the match in but if he participated in this match, it would mean so much to me and all of the family. I was interrupted in my analysis by a few loud knocks on the door. I was greeted by four bright looking characters at the door, my sister, Lilly, my step-brother, Chris and my niece, Lydia who was the same age as Jake and my nephew who had just turned 15. They had come to watch the match, the second introduction to my family into my room needing no knocking of the door. They arrived at the same time. My sister, Sue and step-brother, Jez were welcomed in, the small living room was beginning to get crowded and I told them all about a possible new house for me and my son, in the hope that he played some part in tonight’s match in Switzerland. 8:03pm – Jake’s competitor for the left-wing position, Jeremy Menez, was taken off on a stretcher following a very heavy challenge with a Swiss player, we thought they’d introduce Jake but another Liverpool left-winger, the Dutch international, Ryan Babel. We all accepted the decision that he was a full international. 8:45pm – The half-time whistle blew, with all of the Liverpool starting players and staff with some substitutes following them straight into the dressing room. I could pick out Jake, Javier Mascherano and two others, which included a goalie, probably Scott Carson who stayed on the pitch because they’d probably would be training. 9:02pm – The atmosphere was sky high as the PA voiced number 17 on for number 15. Of course, No.17 was my son, Jake Doyle. This was such a proud moment in my life, probably the best moment in my life. He came on for Peter Crouch who had put in a brilliant performance, scoring two goals. That showed how highly the manager, Rafael Benitez rated him to bring him on for a player who was on a hat-trick. We calmed down and by the time we did it was 3-0 to Liverpool, an own goal, don’t know who it was! 9:43pm – Jake had the ball down the middle of the park and he had plenty of options, Ryan Babel running down the left, Dirk Kuyt up top but he lofted a ball over the defence into what seemed nobody, we all groaned with some inspirational cheering but all of a sudden Steven Gerrard raced into the path of the ball and rocketed the ball into the bottom corner to tie the game up, 4-1. My son had just set up a brilliant goal for Steven Gerrard, they were celebrating, I couldn’t had wished for a better day… ever. This message was edited by Jakeyd on Jul 14 2008.

	Nice to the story from another perspective and that update was really good. Spotted one major mistake though. Why did your dad feel proud to be your son? Isn't he a little old to be your son? Other than that, it was good. I think you should do this more often and even include different people. It will make it better than what it already is.

	Diary of a Professional Footballer 9 Ward Street, Mersey 2:12pm September 24, 2010 The first job on my return from Switzerland was to go to a Mersey estate agent. We found a really nice mansion called Oakwood which was on Allerton Road. It was dated back to 1650. Of course, in the estate agents I was recognized instantly and all manners of Scouse accents were thrown at the entrance where me and my Dad were standing. A few bolted for the door to ask me questions and what not, we finally got to the topic of a new house and we had found a really good-looking mansion, it was called Oakwood, it was an a street called Allerton Road and it was priced £850,000. I thought that I could’ve got this when I joined and with my assist bonus from Wednesday I had pocketed an extra £50,000 which would be spent with more money in the bank – £300,000 to be exact, we could rejuvenate the house and turn it into something modern, something that couldn’t be done without the help of a design team so when I left my Dad with the house to have a tour in, I phoned Grand Designs, you know, that program on Channel 4. In just four hours they were there, I knew because I was spying in and amongst the trees. I found myself parched so I made my way across the street and I was bombarded with people asking for autographs, I couldn’t really say no and it was ten minutes before I wrapped my mouth around a drink of Lemonade. The can successfully in the bin, I saw the Grand Designs team pull out, I must’ve been gone a while. My Dad chased after it and he asked me whether I called them because they had decorated the house while I had gone. I put my thumbs up at him as we walked across the cobbled drive where the Alfa Romeo Brera and the Vauxhall Corsa sat as midgets among men at the top of the drive. I told my Dad to get into the Brera. I followed. I put the car into gear and reversed just missing the silver Corsa. My Dad, of course told me off. He would be bowing down at me before the end of the night. I told him I had £300,000 in the bank left. I lied. We had over £1.65million left. I had been saving up since my days at Farsley and Manchester City. I hadn’t spent a penny on myself since 2004. My Dad would always call me greedy, not spending my £35 a week pocket money, but it all stemmed from March 29th in 2004. But on the 24th of September, 2010 just six years and half it would all reach the pinnacle of money that my Dad had dreamt of. I pulled into a Bugatti dealership, the only one of a few dozen in the UK. My Dad kept questioning me as we passed rows and rows and more rows of motorbikes, all until we got to the far corner of the forecourt, there they sat. Looking as smug as ever. They were all shiny, as I ordered them, six hours ago. The dealer told me to come back at 9:35pm and here we were just sat in front of 253mph worth of vehicle. 900+ horse power. Two Bugatti Veyron’s looked up on us, just waiting to be bought, and within twenty-seven minutes they were. My Dad has never been so confused yet shocked yet gleeful in his life. He didn’t speak a word until we got back to Oakwood when we cheered the house down nearly quite literally. The next morning we would take the Alfa and Vauxhall to dealership to swap for a car for my cousin. That would be an Aston Martin DBS. That would be the surprise.

Gerro and Xabi Alonso in the heart of the field with Jermaine Pennant on the right with our new hero on the left, JAKE DOYLE with Fernando Torres and Dirk Kuyt starting up front.” The strikers I didn’t hear because I was in absolute awe of my name mentioned in the starting XI. I didn’t catch who the subs were but I heard a groan from Ryan Babel next to me, so I guessed he was on the bench, probably ready to replace me as many critics thought I wasn’t good enough to go on. I imagine tomorrow’s papers will say that about all fourteen of us that played today against Aston Villa. The old Anfield was said to be a fortress, we had hardly turned Aston Villa into a fortress as of late with a draw to Wigan and now with a 2-0 loss against Aston Villa. My Premier League home debut/start had at half-time turned into a nightmare because we were 1-0 up and we were fighting just to stay into the game to hang in for a draw. It got a hell of a lot worse when Villa doubled their lead with a goal through Vagner Love to secure the victory. I was taken off with sixteen minutes left for my pal, Ryan Babel and just moments later the other winger, Jermaine Pennant was sent off and that signaled our drop to 8th in the league, we were now 7 points behind Newcastle. I wasn’t able to play against Chelsea because I was cup tied and now faced my next match at a trip to Manchester City’s City of Manchester Stadium.

	Diary of a Professional Footballer October 2010 Update I was continuing my brilliant career, I was at one of the biggest clubs in the world, I was only seventeen, a long way off Farsley Celtic and the Throstle Nest. The days where 70 people turned up when I played for the under-18’s and reserves was the contrast of 60,000 every single week at the New Anfield. Due to my late registration, I was cup-tied, so I had to sit the Chelsea match out which was at our new stadium. Chelsea fielded their strongest side to face eighth placed Liverpool. Chelsea were fourth placed and it didn’t matter because of Fernando Torres who scored in the thirty-eighth minute to bring Liverpool a fourth round tie in November where we were to face another ‘big four’ side in Manchester United at Old Trafford. I was and still am disappointed to miss that match through my cup tied status. Fernando Torres continued his scoring form with two goals against Manchester City in the 26th and 60th minute, in between them Manuel Pasqual suffered an injury in the 55th minute. There wasn’t much time for consequence of Micah Richards’ red card in the 90th minute and it ended 2-0. I started for my second Premier League start and I played the full ninety and got a good 7 rating. Judging on my good form I was to start my home Champions League debut against the Russians, Spartak Moscow, I didn’t start but I got finally got on with sixteen minutes left and got a crap 5 rating which was harsh for the part I played in the boring 0-0 draw. We returned to the Premier League and after the win in Manchester we were sixth in the league and we had closed the gap on Newcastle to four points. We were on a mission to close in even further on Newcastle who lost to Manchester City the day before, 2-1. We would go one point behind if we defeated West Ham United. I returned to the squad and to the left side of midfield. It was to be a slaughter, eventually. Peter Crouch got his one of many from the afternoon after twenty minutes. Everything was going well until. BANG! Julien Faubert got a lucky West Ham goal just two minutes before half-time. We created a BANG! Moment just after half-time when going into the 55th minute and coming out two minutes later 3-1 up with Peter Crouch getting his second and third goal. He rounded the day of following a Dean Ashton sending off Crouch got his fourth goal to propel us to third in the league. Just one point behind Tottenham and Newcastle. With no under-19’s matches in October I was left with nothing whilst all of my teammates played international football, I didn’t make the under-21’s. That meant I could train and be fitter and less tired for the return on the 23rd of October against Reading. England beat Liechtenstein 3-0 at Wembley and then followed up on that with victory in Norway with Steven Gerrard scoring a penalty. New Anfield was the venue for the return to club football against Reading. We certainly didn’t disappoint and I hadn’t had a better day since I bought the house and the Veyron’s. I started my second consecutive match at the New Anfield and within sixteen minutes we were 2-0 up with Peter Crouch and Xabi Alonso getting the early goals. With 59,322 cheering my name, I burst through the defence and slotted the ball past Federici for my first goal in a Liverpool shirt, we were on fire, in 35 minutes we had bagged three goals. Martin Skrtel lowered the tone with an injury. James Milner got Reading a goal to pull things back but it was Liverpool’s day as Fernando Torres got our fourth and final goal to keep us third and one point behind Tottenham and Chelsea. We were on fire and in our fourth straight New Anfield match we took on Sevilla who were the second seeds in our group, we were tied for top on four points and whoever won today would have the advantage of first place until the next time these met. I wasn’t picked to start again and I didn’t get on and I was rather surprised following my match rating of 8 and a goal. By the time I had got my goal on the weekend, all the goals had happened on tonight’s match. We had got all of our goals by the tenth minute with goals from Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and a Riccardo Montolivo penalty. Sevilla had got a goal back through Federico Fazio however, they never really got going. We top our group by three points and awaited the return fixture in November. To cap off the month we faced our second away fixture of the month against Newcastle who had lost their last two fixtures, it was at St. James’ Park. I returned to the squad for the league match and all four goals were once again finished by the 36-minute mark. Newcastle’s Nicolas Anelka got Newcastle’s first goal which triggered a domino effect with Ibrahim Afellay doubling Newcastle’s and suddenly we were in a lot of trouble. However, with our Spaniard double of Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso got the goals in the 35th and 36th minute to draw us level and that’s how things ended. Chelsea had opened up the gap to three points with Manchester United in between us who were one point ahead of us. Results – Liverpool 1-0 Chelsea – Carling Cup Third Round Manchester City 0-2 Liverpool – Barclays Premier League Liverpool 0-0 Spartak Moscow – UEFA Champions League Group E Liverpool 4-1 West Ham United – Barclays Premier League Liverpool 4-1 Reading – Barclays Premier League Liverpool 3-1 Sevilla – UEFA Champions League Group E Newcastle United 2-2 Liverpool – Barclays Premier League
