Diary of a Professional Football

September 2009 Update

We began the month with a tie against my favourite club, Halifax Town we had had sparring matches with Farsley under-18’s and Huddersfield under-18’s and they had been promoted to league two which meant they were eligible for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy which we met them in the northern first round. The club matches were interrupted in place of two U-19 International matches (read below vv) against Wales and Andorra to test me out. Back to reality after the cap-less trip to the England U-19’s camp and Cheltenham were the challenge. Reality would, unfortunately continue with matches against Peterbrough, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Brighton, Gillingham and Brentford as the month came to a close.

The tie at The Shay, I’d been waiting for, for a while and I finally got it in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy northern first round and it wasn’t a disappointment as we demolished them, but only with two goals, through Eddie Johnson and a Tobias Milkaelsson penalty, they both came either side of the half as we stormed to victory. I gladly stayed on the whole match whilst gaining a match rating of 6.

quote Call-up
E-mail is a great thing, but the telephone is a greater invention as a gleeful Dad brought me up the home phone and told me to answer it and he collapsed onto my bed, through tiredness due to his work schedule. I answer successfully and he rounded off by telling me I was in the England U-19’s for the upcoming matches Wales and Andorra, both friendlies and he wanted to test me out. I turned around very slightly and jumped and cheered with my Dad as we celebrating into the long nights, which I regretted after.

After the Halifax match and the great news after, I had to jet off for the venue and the match was on the Thursday and the second match of my stint would be against Andorra on the Monday. Country comes before club and I was very proud to be dragging an England shirt over my back. But it wasn’t to be against Wales U-19’s as I didn’t even make the bench so the boss was pretty clear on what we wanted, maybe for the Andorra match, hey? No. Even without the caps I still had the wisdom of the training and all that bollocks.

Back to the reality of League One and I faced the challenge of Cheltenham. Surprisingly it was an interesting encounter. Especially when Cheltenham’s Leon Knight grabbed two early goals in the twenty-third and twenty-ninth minute to leave out of the game. That’s what they thought, too. A Tobias Mikaelsson dragged us back into the game with a late first half goal in the thirty-eighth minute. A crazy two minutes left Cheltenham down and out of the match when Phil Ifill scored in back-to-back minutes and the game was ours again. I was subbed off in the 63rd minute and I got a match rating of 6.

Peterbrough and Wolves came next with middle of the road matches and no-one was more fired up than me having been taken off early in the Cheltenham match and travelled to U-19’s matches and not getting a match for England. Nevertheless, I was given another match rating of 6 against Peterbrough following a 2-1 away loss. Another loss was on the cards with a crushing 3-1 defeat to Wolves at Molineux. Another six match rating appeared for me as we took up 18th place, just hovering over the relegation dog-fight.

Three more matches were left of September. Brighton, Gillingham and Brentford were remaining. A little roll started to appear, out of nowhere. We bagged a result against Brighton, a 2-0 victory followed by a Gillingham match where we claimed victory, 2-1. I didn’t compete in this match due to high fatigue levels. Our unbeaten run continued as I re-joined the set up and received a yellow card and a substitution. We were rolling into October and we rose seven places to 11th since the Bradford match. Life was good.

Diary of a Professional Footballer

October 2009 Update

We started the month off with league match against Preston and a cup match against Rochdale in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Northern Second Round. Yet another exciting month where I was looking forward to another successful month with the schedule we had given us at the start of the month. Another useless call-up to the England-U19’s for the matches against Luxembourg, Macedonia and Serbia ended with no caps and me missing out on the Rochdale loss and the Carlisle draw so I came back to face Nott’m Forest, with Crewe, Tranmere and Swindon left to play in the month.

We began as we finished September, on a roll. We continued beating teams and put a troublesome few minutes behind us to secure the 3-2 victory over Preston at Deepdale. I got another 90 minutes in with a match rating of 6. For the squad we marched up to eighth and we now with a few goals off the play-offs. We had a barrier of a Cup Match to contend with. Rochdale was our opponent, but a call the previous day disrupted my match preparation for something much better, a possible England U-19 cap.

These matches I would hope to get a cap for would be for the U-19 European Championship qualifying group against Luxembourg, FYR Macedonia and Serbia. I looked for my debut cap, stranger things have happened. As expected I didn’t feature in the sides demolishing of Luxembourg 4-0 and FYR Macedonia 6-0. Serbia came up, I worked hard to be there but I felt it was too far, I was only 16-year old I was pushing myself too hard. But it wasn’t too be, not even one unused sub outing. I turned back to reality and saw we got eliminated from the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on penalties to Rochdale. I would rather have helped the squad than sat on the sidelines knowing I wasn’t going to play when I knew a guaranteed spot would in the cup match for Huddersfield.

As I was travelling from the England camp, the boss called in to say I would not be part of the Carlisle match, which was good because they’d be playing with ten men if they’d have thought I’d be there. The Nottingham Forest match was on the cards when I got back with three remaining matches of the month. Unfortunately, in that match I had injured my groin and I was left with no other option but to miss the rest of the month for the remaining three matches.

Missed Matches Through Injury –
Huddersfield 1-2 Swindon
Huddersfield 0-0 Crewe
Tranmere Rovers 1-1 Huddersfield Town

The recent run of form left us in a mid-table position of 13th. Things weren’t going our way and especially my way.

Diary of a Professional Footballer

November 2009 Update

To kick off November it was touch and go for me as we faced Bradford at Valley Parade in a heated derby match in mid-week, without me, Huddersfield lost 3-1 at Valley Parade. In the end it wasn’t going to happen and I would hopefully make a return for the match on the weekend for my FA Cup debut against Accrington Stanley, I hope for the debut in the FA Cup but it wasn’t enough as I passed the late fitness test only to be an unused sub, again without my skill we were dumped out of the FA Cup at the first effort against Accrington at the Galpharm.

After the two losses, I was back to full fitness and on a war path to impress the boss for the remaining two matches against Shrewsbury and Northampton which powered us towards the festive season. With a break for the internationals the call I was expecting was received as I was once again called up to the England U-19 and still awaiting my first England U-19 cap. I made the bench but didn’t get on, so same old shit, they went on to win 3-0. As I returned, the trip to Shrewsbury laid ahead and I started for the first time in a while and we drew the match and dropped to 19th in League One. We returned in mid-week to face Northampton Town at the Galpharm, it was one of those matches where everything just clicked, I’m sure you lot have had one. Well I got the goal we needed to propel ourselves into a 2-0 victory and 15th in League One

Results –
Bradford City 3-1 Huddersfield Town – League One
Huddersfield Town 1-2 Accrington Stanley – FA Cup First Round
England U-19’s 3-0 Slovenia U-19’s – International Friendly
Shrewsbury Town 2-2 Huddersfield Town – League One
Huddersfield Town 2-0 Northampton Town – League One

Diary of a Professional Footballer

December 2009 Update

We began as we started, with a 2-0 victory over Millwall at the Galpharm. We were looking forward to the festive season and towards the upcoming fixtures with the latest match coming Blackpool away and we had barely started the month and it was another match where everything went right and I got my third goal of the season with an early which set us up for our third straight 2-0 victory and this lifted us up to 8th and we were only a point away from the play-offs. Another derby match was in place for us against Barnsley which got postponed due to internationals and I was fired up for my first derby match of the league season. They stopped us in our path, no wonder – they had Pele.

We had been stuck on eighth and still had a few matches left of the month, starting with Yeovil Town. We managed to hold them at the Galpharm to a 1-1 draw, but it dropped us down to 9th place in the league, now three points of the play-offs. My first Boxing Day match would turn out to be my 20th appearance for Huddersfield and it went very well and we made the match look easy with two late goals to beat Leyton Orient 3-0. The final match of the year, mine anyway was against Doncaster Rovers who were looking to make it 2-1 for the season. But it wasn’t to be, a 1-1 draw marked the end of our sparring for the season and I welcomed 2010 with open arms, I wondered what was going to be on the horizon for me.

Results –
Huddersfield Town 2-0 Millwall – League One
Blackpool 0-2 Huddersfield Town – League One
Huddersfield Town 1-2 Barnsley – League One
Huddersfield Town 1-1 Yeovil Town – League One
Huddersfield Town 3-0 Leyton Orient – League One
Doncaster Rovers 1-1 Huddersfield Town – League One

Diary of a Professional Footballer

January 2010 Update

The New Year started off with a crushing 3-0 away victory over Oldham Athletic, as we searched for the play-offs as we sneaked up to one point behind the play-offs in 7th place. We powered our way through January and continued our dominance of the league and our good run of form with a 2-1 victory over Darlington, after the victory it meant we had been unbeaten for over a month. The wins which I mentioned put us in a very powerful position in fifth place and two points clear in the play-offs and just nine points off automatic promotion. Up next came Peterbrough who were flying high in second. We were going so well until my injury halted our form and we ended up clinging onto a 1-1 draw which left us in fifth place. I came off with a strained neck which will leave me on the sidelines for 1-2 weeks.

I came onto light training in the mid-week before the Wolves match and the boss told me he was making changes to the team with me coming into the centre of midfield. I was set to play against top of the league, Wolves who were flying high like us, something had to give. I was minutes away from starting until the manager changed his mind I made me an unused substitute. Our unbeaten run continued as we stumbled towards a 2-2 draw. We were dropped one place and hanging just above Bradford who were below us on goal difference. With one match left, I was into the squad to face Brighton in our first away game since the 6th of January. Thanks two injuries to Brighton players we capitalized on that I celebrated to a 2-0 victory which left us 5th in the League as we closed in on February.

Results –
Oldham Athletic 0-3 Huddersfield Town – League One
Huddersfield Town 2-1 Darlington – League One
Huddersfield Town 1-1 Peterbrough – League One
Huddersfield Town 2-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers – League One
Brighton & Hove Albion 0-2 Huddersfield Town – League One

Diary of a Young Footballer

February 2010 Update

To begin another month at Huddersfield we had a match against Cheltenham to kick off what we wanted to be another great month like the previous month. Despite the 2-0 loss to Cheltenham and break in our form we hadn’t dropped places, only our goal difference. With several clubs, including our next opponents, Gillingham gathering below us, we needed a result against them but it turned out not to be the one we wanted as we slipped out of the play-offs to 7th place due to the 1-1 draw with Gillingham. Thirdly, we faced a trip to Swindon on my 17th birthday, they were struggling in the relegation zone, so many didn’t see them as a threat, but they were as they took us apart to our surprise with a 3-1 scoreline. The honeymoon period was definitely over.

Three matches were left in our path for the month, Brentford, Preston and Carlisle stood in our way to the play-offs and we were on a dip in form but we were about to get back into form with a 2-0 victory over Brentford which had two sending offs. Talking about bookings, I was on the proverbial tightrope, just one yellow away from a one match ban. The tightrope collapsed in the 0-0 bore draw with Preston as I was banned for the match against strugglers Carlisle United. The draw put us in the play-offs on goal difference, just 10 goals the difference between us and Doncaster in 7th place. Our unbeaten run continued into the last month with me watching in the stands. My friend, Daniel Bogard got our second goal to put us 5th again 2 points ahead of the 7th place and ten points behind automatic promotion.

Results –
Cheltenham Town 2-0 Huddersfield Town – League One
Huddersfield Town 1-1 Gillingham – League One
Swindon Town 3-1 Huddersfield Town – League One
Brentford 0-2 Huddersfield Town – League One
Huddersfield Town 0-0 Preston North End – League One
Huddersfield Town 2-0 Carlisle United – League One

The reason you aren't getting a lot of comments is because the layout isn't appealing. I haven't read it but I'm sure with more colour and pictures you'll gain in readers.

I will change it in the near future. But for now...

Diary of a Professional Footballer

March 2010 Update

We kicked off the month against promotion chasers, Nottingham Forest at the City Ground and I was back to the squad following my one-match ban. However, the inconsistent form continued as we slumped to a 3-1 away defeat to Nott’m Forest, we managed to claw onto the last of the play-off spots in 6th place. Another big match situation sit just in front of us in mid-week against Bradford, this time at the Galpharm and we were prepared for war and we were beaten again by Bradford, this time 2-1 and we dropped to eighth position and now two points behind the play-offs, our dip in form came at the wrong time.

Three more matches were remaining in the month with Crewe Alexandra, Tranmere Rovers and Northampton left in the month, as we closed in on a play-off spot. A further drop in form was on the cards as we slumped to a third straight defeat, we needed to get ourselves back on the straight and narrow but it was going to be hard as we lay 10th in the league, 3 points off the play-offs after the 2-1 defeat to Crewe. I was waiting on the call from The FA and received the fourth call to face the Saudi Arabia Under-19’s at Ashton Gate, Bristol. I was once again on the bench and guess what… I didn’t get on. I was getting experience with every chance I got to reach the England camp.

The return match we really let our feelings go with a commanding 4-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers with me bagging the opening goal to take my goal tally for the season to 4. This pulled us up three places and left us 1 point off the play-offs. 1 point in it and one match left of the month against Northampton it was all or nothing. We took neither, sort of in the middle. This match was fiery for the first 29 minutes it died out into a 2-2 draw after the goals and left us 7th in the league and we were 2 points off the play-offs, where Leyton Orient were happily sat.

Results –
Nottingham Forest 3-1 Huddersfield Town – League One
Huddersfield Town 1-2 Bradford City – League One
Crewe Alexandra 2-1 Huddersfield Town – League One
England U-19’s 5-0 Saudi Arabia U-19’s – International Friendly
Huddersfield Town 4-0 Tranmere Rovers – League One
Northampton 2-2 Huddersfield Town – League One

I understand what TB is saying and maybe you should take his advice and use colour. The results would be a good place to do it. But, for me, I don't mind lots of size one together. I have read this from the start and have loved every minute of it. The last few updates, which I have just caught up on, are brilliant as usual. KUTVGW!
