The Diary of a Professional Footballer - A WHOLE SEASON (2025/26) UPDATE!

The Diary of a Young Footballer

City of Manchester Stadium
7:56PM
June 29, 2007

I trudged across the car park, but it wasn’t any ordinary car park, it was the City of Manchester Stadium car park. The academy boss had named today, June 29, 2007, Judgement Day because he was going to announce the five hopefuls that would join the City under-15’s for the new season. Manchester City was an exciting club to be at for the new season but unfortunately it didn’t involve me. I strolled across the car park with my feet scraping across the floor and my head down and I was just intent on finding my car to finally get home after a day of straining tests. So were four other players who got let down tonight.

My Dad met me halfway between the car and the entrance to the stadium and comforted me,

”I didn’t make the team.”

”Don’t worry, lad. We’ll keep looking for a club for you…”

Bingo! My eyes locked in the silver 07 plated Vauxhall Corsa and I sauntered up to the car and my parents knew the result by the anguish on my face. I put my head down dropped my boot bag onto the seat next to me and dropped myself onto my seat. I was inconsolable. The 35-minute journey back to West Yorkshire seemed to take forever until finally we reached the A644 and pulled off into Brighouse Town Centre. 5 minutes later and I found myself bolting upstairs into my bedroom throwing by boot bag on to my computer chair… I collapsed onto my bed and in seconds of my face crashing against the soft pillow I was out of it…

I sense light at the end of the tunnel though..

I like your writing style, and I am looking forward to seeing where this is going, although I think I have an idea. Good luck.

I slipped out of my clothes I wore yesterday and threw them into the washing basket. I dragged today’s clothes over me – which was a brand new Manchester United kit – and dragged myself downstairs towards the dining room where my daily Weetabix waited for me…

Trudging down the stairs I kept thinking to myself reasons why I wasn’t picked for the new season…

“Can I not run properly?”
“Am I unfit to play for a Premier League club?”
“Did they not like the club I supported?”

All sorts, most were very unlikely but I knew I had to pick myself up for the Brighouse signing-on day tomorrow. I hadn’t played for them since last October when a Manchester City scout spotted me and asked me along to play for the academy for a weeks, it snowballed into months until last night. The manager was delighted for me and told me I could come back any time… So tomorrow at 1:30PM I’d be there at the clubhouse with all my ex-teammates who thought I was too good for them, that wasn’t true and obviously wasn’t by the results last night. Of course the day wouldn’t be without the smart remarks made, but I didn’t care, I was doing something with my life, whether they liked it or not.

I started the day well, accidentally knocking down a milk bottle and smashing it all of the dining room, shards of glass pierced holes in the wall, and of course Mr. not good enough had to clear it up which left me eating my weetabix fourty minutes after expected after cleaning up my dining room and removing chards of glass from my cats belly.. and when I finally get my breakfast there’s no more milk so that idea’s scrapped..

I lean over to the toaster and catch the toast as it flies through the air. But, to my dismay, no butter. *bleep* THIS. I trudged up towards the sparkling new 42’’ HD ready Sony Bravia, switch Sky+ on and watch My Family that I recorded last night. I couldn’t get into it so turned the tele off halfway and marched up to my room…

The Diary of a Young Footballer

Brighouse Juniors Clubhouse
1:42pm
July 1, 2007

The gravel skirted into the drive of the clubhouse as the Corsa made it through the stones like a knife through butter. A free parking space was shortly filled by the silver Vauxhall. I pulled the handle of the car and the place was packed. Tents filled with games for charity and bouncy castles, all what you expected from a Brighouse Juniors fun day / signing on day / presentation day. It was a long way from the City of Manchester Stadium’s capabilities, but it was home. I dragged my shiny new white Nike shoes across the gravel and they soon transformed a pale brown colour. I made my way to the signing-on tent as many heads turned including my friends from the team.

”Existing Player form, please…”

I could feel the tension as the usual matchday tea & biscuits lady transferred the form from the sparkling black table to my sweaty palms. I filled the form out quickly and she accepted it gladly notifying us that we would receive a call to which team I would be in for the new season. I hoped with my teammates from last season but a lot had happened since October 2006. I sauntered over to the ‘A’ team tent where all the usual were with the players and parents listening carefully to the Under 10’s ‘B’ team presentation ceremony.

They all look startling and what I’d feared had not come true, they seemed to welcome me with open arms. The club centre forward started the clapping and welcomed me to sit next to him.

”I’m glad you are back, Jake. We haven’t been doing the best since you left, I know it wasn’t your decision and that’s the way things go…”

3:54pm

The Under 15’s manager lumbered his way up the stairs, his five pints of Strongbow in the midday sun were definitely showing now…

“Now, w-w-we have the most susseccful club of the side”

He was definitely drunk.

The assistant manager forced the rowdy manager off stage as he continued the presentation…

[…]

”And now to clubman of the year award. This man was taken away from us just a month into the new season by a Premier League club, he certainly doesn’t need an introduction. Good, because we’re not giving him one. *Waits for laughs* *gets none* […] Jake Doyle!”

I strut up the steps and receive the award and shake his hand and lift the trophy up, proud. Proud to be back home, proud to be back at Brighouse Juniors. I sat myself next to the club forward and watched the rest of the proceedings and picked up the season medal for the 2006-07 season. That would join my four medals and nine trophies on my cabinet in my room.

Finally, back at training with the lads… I haven’t trained for Brighouse since October and my last match was a 2-0 win over Howdenclough where I set-up the last goal. I was a bit rusty since my last match was in May against Oldham Athletic at the City of Manchester Stadium where I played for seven minutes as a substitute, everyone saw them dropping me, but me.

I skimmed a ball across the wet turf to the club manager who had recovered from his signing-on day binge drinking session. We began with five laps round the pitch, my fitness training in Manchester really did pay off well as I won by a fair bit.. I had improved massively since the last time I entered the training ground with some very good managers not managers who do it just to help kids and get pissed every other weekend.

The boss set up five portable tennis nets and we played head tennis in the cold wind which was frosting my jacket over. I teamed up with the club captain. Playing with my old club team mates, only one thought was going through my mind, “why did I sign?” Before last October I was just a solid winger who could beat men but since I joined Manchester City, they had installed an entire new dimension to my game. Now I had pace, agility, stamina, strength, the lot! I was hoping to sign for a local club and to sign on at Brighouse Juniors was good enough for the moment, a good stepping stone onto the world of professional football.

The Brighouse Juniors club house was a long way from ten minutes from an Under-16 Premier League club contract for this season. I gladly swapped unknown people for my friends and City of Manchester Stadium for the Brighouse Juniors clubhouse. But I kept asking myself, there must be more to this life than playing for Brighouse Juniors, I had got a taster of it but couldn’t grab it when I could, the next opportunity I got I would clench it with both hands and not let go…

Diary of a Young Footballer

Millennium Tournament, Lightcliffe
11:35am
August 5, 2007

The crowds were deafening, I hadn’t played in a 5-a-side tournament for Brighouse in about a year, I loved this type of game, a one day tournament, three group matches, quarter finals, semi finals and then a final. I had played here five years ago but we got knocked out in the quarter finals. All eight pitches were marked with sign posts to tell you where you were… Wembley, Old Trafford, Emirates Stadium, Anfield etc.

Our group was to play at Stamford Bridge. Our opponents were Warley, Clifton Rangers and Hartshead. Stiff opposition, all played in Division One with us last season and we were determined to go through top of the group. Ten minute games, we had the tough luck of playing second but then straight after.

Our first game was against Warley, mmm, tough opposition. From the moment the match kicked off we were on the rocks with our keeper making a brilliant save from a stunning shot from 10 yards which was bound for the top corner. The keeper lumped a ball forward onto a clip on from our club striker and I was through on goal and I rounded the keeper and searched for the striker but couldn’t find him through the crowd and before I knew I was on the ground and the game had reached the other end of the pitch. Luckily for us, there was no offsides so as soon as I got up from the bone crunching tackle, the ball was headed my way and I chipped the keeper but a divot in the ground caused it to bounce wide when it was goal bound. Before I knew it, it was full-time, an end-to-end 0-0 draw on the 55-yard pitch.

There was no rest for us, half of our team was red in the face after the sweltering temperatures took their toll on us. I rallied the team and we told ourselves not to get run ragged and we weren’t…

We were against the whopping side of the league, Hartshead, last year and they got relegated on single figures for points. Within four minutes we had scored twice, once from the penalty spot which I won. They’d pulled it back moments from the kick off as fatigue was taking its toll on our side, but not me. The club striker teed me up for a shot from kick off and I swung for it and feinted with the ball, this fooled the opposition. I offloaded to the winger as I bolted into the box where he found me and I chested down, past the keeper and was left with an easy tap-in, 3-1. From there we let the clock run down and we had won, we were top of the league and now with a 40 minute period where we could re-cooperate.

There was meant to be plenty of professional club scouts at the tournament and knowing that I was on the bill, I spotted three around the pitch, they were all taking notes as I took my seat on a deck chair next to my mate. One was wearing a Stoke City polo shirt, one was wearing a Derby County jacket who was burning his pen out with the note taking his was making. The final scout I saw was a bit low-key, Blue Square Premier side, Altrincham. I saw him making his way towards me and my saving grace was that my mate had offered me a trip to the Burger Van with him to pick up a few Lucozade’s, which I gleefully accepted and we scurried away.

When we returned the scout was still there, sat in my seat next to my parents, he dragged me away from the pitch where I kept repeating myself to the scout, that my match was next. He wouldn’t listen and soon my parents followed the journey me and the scout took from the pitch.

“[…]What I’m saying is, we are asking you to join the Altrincham under-18’s side for a two-week long trial.”

”Umm.. let me think about it” I was cut short with the whistle to begin Brighouse match, which I was not a part of. “Let me decide later, I’ve got a tournament to think about.”

I barged my way past the Altrincham scout as I heard the cheers… from the Clifton Rangers’ parents. I sat myself down on the deck chair, not pleased with me missing the final group match before our Quarter Final Match with the ‘B’ team. I could hear something in the background… “I think I’ll be on my way, I don’t our side coping with a primadonna.” My dad marched up to me, he wasn’t pleased.

After the argument I turned to see us 3-0 down, I was annoyed with the scout now. The full-time whistle signaled our clubs movement to the ‘Emirates Stadium’ pitch to face the ‘B’ side, tempers would flare. Our manager forced me into a quiet spot and asked me to captain the side against a treacherous match next.

After the journey which took us down the hill and straight onto the pitch the ‘B’ team players were already there, expecting us the play straight away. Now the rules were four minutes a half so we had to act quick… Four minutes of intense football and we were one nil down as the manager called us in for a quick half-time team talk. This time the sun was in their eyes. I forced their keeper into a mistake by shooting from the halfway mark and the keeper misjudged the bounce and the bounce looped over his head.

Diary of a Young Footballer

Millennium Tournament – Lightcliffe

[…]

But the bounce hit onto the bar and bounced back onto the keeper’s neck and it rolled into the corner and nestled neatly into the net. Now the so-called ‘B’ team were on the rocks but the next two minutes of normal time and the four minutes of extra time didn’t achieve anything except burn the retina in the ‘B’ side’s eye. Just a few minutes later it was my deciding penalty that was going to decide to the match.. in Ronaldo style I run up to it and stop and the keeper goes down immediately and all that’s left to do is to stick it into the net, that’s what I did, we were moving on to ‘Old Trafford’ and the semi-finals.

We faced Greetland in the semi finals and I could spot all of the scouts around the sides urging one player to stand out, this was my stage. I touched it to the striker and he played a beautifully lofted ball down the right-wing and I surged into the box where I was meeting the ball in the air until I was pushed in the box. I look around and hear the boo’s from one set of parents, it was our parents, to my surprise they hadn’t given the penalty.

I track play down again and make a perfectly timed sliding tackle from behind on their main striker but after I swipe the ball away from him up onto the field the referee calls for the free kick as the striker was ‘in agony’. I expressed my dismay to the referee, the goalkeeper raced out and pulled me back but I was in that kind of mood and wasn’t about to let it rest so the referee had ‘no option’ but to card me and leave me on the proverbial tightrope.

With seconds left in the match, it was 0-0 and our winger had just played a brilliant diagonal ball in my direction but a little niggle from their full-back sent me off balance and the referee once again let play go on. I was frustrated enough as it was, now I was fuming. I played a give and go with our striker and purposely missed the ball for the full-back to run onto it so I could clatter him, I did, and I watched the rest of the match from my deck chair.

A full-blown brawl was taking place as I trudged off the field and I felt a strong tap on my shoulder, it was a Greetland parent, about my height. She was mouthing off so I pushed her away, she kept coming so pushed her to the ground. I continued my saunter off the pitch as the match was abandoned and Warley were given the tournament as there was no opposition as both had been suspended. I was just about to reach my car after a long day when someone tapped my on my shoulder, again. I stood still, not bothering to turn round I told him to piss off.

But it was another scout, he identified himself as a Farsley Celtic scout so I turned round and paid attention. He agreed that the referee in the semi final was disgraceful and that I was wrongly sent-off he then offered me a place in Farsley’s under-18 side. I accepted gladly as I saw the Altrincham scout stomp into the car park.. “no effing talent here..”

I was to start just a week away from now on the 12th to meet up with the squad and then hopefully take part in the debut match for the under-18’s, but some rigorous tests stood in my way.

Diary of a Young Footballer

Throstle Nest – Farsley Celtic’s Home Ground
7:11pm
August 12, 2007

What was happening was the complete contrast of what happened two months ago in Manchester but now in Leeds, I had just past the tests that I had failed for Manchester City but now for Farsley Celtic, I bounced across the car park with a smile which stretched from one ear to the other, I ran through the car park, a complete contrast of the slow trudge a few months ago as I met the sparkling silver Corsa I nearly dived inside the car and onto the comfy back seats of the car with excitement. The 30-minute journey flew by as I finally stuck my tournament medal for player of the tournament along with the 2006-07 season medal on my wall and planted my Clubman trophy nestling neatly with my Year 6 final winning trophy for St. Joseph’s School.

I sunk into the bed as I scrolled through BBC Sport website where I read that Chelsea had being tied with Reading and the same result between Derby and Wigan. I was delighted with myself, and even more so when I heard a shout from downstairs…

”Jake, it’s for you!”

I dived out of my bed and galloped downstairs and met my Dad on the bottom of the stairs and raced through the laminate flooring and into the kitchen where the phone was off the hook…

”Hello, is that Jake? I answered correctly, yes. ”We’d like to let you know that you will start your Farsley Celtic training on the 15th of August as the under-18’s boss would like you to start in the league match.” OH YEAH! I could say what I wanted to say quick enough and there it was … training for a proper club and maybe a debut under my belt on Saturday, only time would tell…

That was it, my first training session was over, I would say I had real competition for my place on the wings but then again I was only a ‘fourteen year-old wonderkid’ as my manager told me. The boss dragged me over to the touchline as they slowly ended training. ”I wanted to let you know, you’ll be starting on Saturday, I know it’s a big step from 2 weeks ago but I just feel you are a brilliant installment to the team, the players like you and I think you are one of the best players on the side.” I stood there in absolute awe all I could muster was a simple wow from my lips. He sent me off to where the Corsa pulled over and told me to return on Friday to the final training session before the match.

As I sauntered over to the car, the other players soon followed me as the boss stopped them, probably something to do with me. I got into the Corsa as we sped home, I was astonished with what my manager told me. Three days until my first full match in a Farsley shirt.
