Skipping Grades...

I need to skip grade 9 and go to grade 10...

It all started like this, I have been making more friends in 1 grade higher than me, and losing friends in the same grade as me... I will be entering grade 8 after this summer, and I will have no friends...

I know to skip a grade you have to be smart, so I will do my very very best to get high grades as possible...

my grades are average on: 1 C for math, (My difficulty) and the rest A's and B's and I get Straight G's

(G's are behavioral, and Maturity, and its the best you can get out of N, S, G

I have a feeling I can do better, I just don't choose to... So if I ever get straight a's or all a's and 1 b... Wouldn't that let me skip a grade?

My mum said that, Chances are, cause I am so close to finishing school, that Ill probably just get, grade 10 work, in the grade 8 class... But I would rather skip a grade... Please tell me the best solution.

PS: I have a couple of friends in my grade, but I don't really like them.

re: Skipping Grades...

So you plan on entering Grade 8, completing it, skipping 9 and going to 10?

To go up a grade, you're really going to need more than a B average. Grade skipping is usually done in Primary School, during the early years when a child has clearly been raised academically to a higher level than the others. Doing so now may come as a shock. You'll be sitting on over average grades, then thrown into grade 10 work that will probably require a sound understanding of Grade 9 work.

Assuming you get straight A's in year 8 (regardless of the fact that the school probably won't see the friend situation as a plausible reason) is it really worth risking it all in 5 of the most important years of your life? Chances are you will struggle in year 10, just pass, and then either repeat the grade and end up where you were, or go on to grade 11/12 way behind.

re: Skipping Grades...

I know that... It would be so hard... but the reason is... is because (well I know skipping grades is just for the challenge, and all) and what I am about to type would most likely go into the intellectual forum...

but, the reason why I wanted to skip mainly is because of the friends, without them, I get overly depressed, and I have attempted suicide... It sound's crazy, maybe I am looking for attention or not...

MOD: If nessecary (Can't spell ), could this be closed, or moved to another suitable forum?

Skipping grades is one of the worst things you can do because you're not prepared for the real world when you rush through school.

You could just change schools. Starting fresh could help.

re: Skipping Grades...

I have considered that a lot... but a lot of people would miss me, and I just... I can't, besides I made it into this special class that only 30 grade 8's get chosen out of around 200, so I have to stay for grade 8 for that.

re: Skipping Grades...

Grade skipping is not very common in later years of school, basically in Primary. And TBH I don't think getting C's will help you skip a grade. Your expected to get straight A's, required to maintain A's and B's, and some schools are required to do extra stuff like math and reading packets.

Skipping Grades...

Once you reach High School (Grade 9) you will see all your grade 10 friends, so you can still talk to them. Skipping your Freshman year is risky because you learn a lot of base information that will help with the rest of your high school career.

Ugh, I've wanted to do something similar. Almost all my best friends are now seniors and will be graduating after this year, and I'll have to make new best friends for my senior year.

re: Skipping Grades...

Skipping grades at your level on education is very difficult, and rarely is it the best option to take. I skipped a grade, but that was at a very young age (I was six) so all I missed out on was how to colour inside the lines and how to cut out shapes and stick them on paper.

When you get into the later years of schooling, you'll begin to find that each year builds on the last; things that you learn in Year 8 will be the foundations for those you learn in Year 9, which will prepare you for Year 10 and so on. It is this important foundation building that makes it difficult to skip later years; if you jump from Year 8 to Year 10, you'll find yourself in the deep end because you don't have enough of the fundamental knowledge gained in Year 9 to completely understand the new concepts that are being thrown at you in Year 10.

As for the friendship issue, there'll always be someone there who you can hang out with if most of your friends have graduated ahead of you; if this is the sole reason for you wanting to skip a grade, then I'm afraid it is not a strong one. Also, the criteria is not based on 'potential to do well' but actually doing well; if you really want to skip a grade, then you'll need to show that you NEED to skip the grade academically, not because you're going to miss seeing a few friends at school for a year.

EDIT: Just read your other post. If it really is that bad, surely you can still catch up with them before/after school or on the weekends? I still don't think skipping a grade is the answer here.

re: Skipping Grades...

From my experience grade 10 is a lot harder then grade 8, you would need to be extremely smart to skip grade 9, otherwise you might struggle. Make a few friends in your classes and you can see all your other friends during breaks and out of school. Good luck if you want to try and skip 9 still though..

re: Skipping Grades...

Just to add my voice to the choir here... I really wouldn't recommend skipping a grade. I can appreciate where you're coming from - in grade 10 (because our grade sizes were massive) my group of mates were split up into different classes. Well, actually, most of them went to one class and I to another.

I was devastated, but there were several advantages: it really let me concentrate on my work during class (as nerdy as that is), I made new friends in my class, and I probably appreciated the time I spent with my mates at recess and lunch more for not being near them 24/7.

Skipping a grade due to the number of mates in your class isn't really a brilliant reason.

re: Skipping Grades...

That is just a bad idea. It is sad that you have made friends in a higher grade, but skipping to be with them is not the answer. That would require an incredible amount of work to accomplish.

Also, school friends will probably not be your lifelong friends, so rushing through life for them is not really worth it. Go at your own pace.

I agree. The best way to deal with this is to just go through 8th grade for a year and then enter high school. That way you'd be in 9th grade and your friends 10th. You get to see them anyways in school. You just won't be in their classes, but it's not like you should really hang out with your friends during classes anyways. Unless your school separates all the individual grades.
