Why not? It's probably the easiest in my opinion. Wait for him to play (example: dum dum daaaaaah), then wait a bit in time with the rhythm and return it to him (bleep bleep bleeeeep).

If the tree is doing the example, you can also follow his rhythm to get bonus stuff

Maybe its just my hearing but I found I need headphones (or speakers) with better bass than my psp just to hear the trees song so that I could copy it.

Probably a little of both. I always use headphones, never have a problem, but it is very bassy which means it's hard to hear.
