Its kind of hard to answer in one word. The original game operated on a hidden Character Emotion Level, I forgot what it was exactly called. The way you interact with characters in towns, or in battle (i.e. healing or reviving someone) influenced your outcome with a character. And with a wide number of multiple endings, the possibilities were endless.
