HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

Well you cant have a high definition forum with out a discussion of HD-DVD verses Blu-Ray.

Personally, I'm going for blu-ray, mostly because of the 25GB storage capacity over the 15GB. More storage means more video, and the more stuff I can burn to a disk.

I just found this article that says Paramount has stopped supporting the HD-DVD format. That just leaves pretty much Microsoft and Toshiba are the only ones really supporting it any more. Could this be the final blow to blu-ray?

So that aside, which format is everyone else going for, and why?

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

There really isn't much left to discuss as far as the format war anymore. The battle has pretty much been decided. Warner Bros announced on Jan 4th that they would be going Blu-ray exclusive starting in March. That left only Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal to support HD-DVD. That was bad enough as is.

Now Paramount hasn't officially pulled their contract yet. But with only two major studios left and Paramount ready to jump ship there isn't much steam left in the engine. It is really just a matter of time now before Toshiba throws in the towel. And Microsoft? I don't think they really care who wins. They just felt like picking a side and it made sense to pick HD-DVD because Sony had to pick Blu-ray by default.

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

Considering I have 6 HD-DVD movies it really sucks that HD-DVD looks to have lost the battle >_<.

From a quality perspective Blu-Ray and HD-DVD look just as good as one another in almost all transfers that I've seen and that I've read reviews about, clearly the larger capacity of Blu-Ray hasn't resulted in a huge quality improvement, yet that added capacity will be useful for other things so overall, BD winning is probably not a bad thing.

Can't say I've seen the quality of Blu-Ray, but the price of the movies are stupidly over-priced.

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

I havnt noticed blu-ray movies being very over priced. I've seen a bunch of them the same price as DVD's, or just a few dollars more.

You also have to remember this is new technology. When DVD players first came out, they were around a thousand dollars. I'm just glad you can get a blu-ray player for $500.

Normal DVDs over here are about £13 when they're first released and Blu-Ray DVD's are almost, if not double that.

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

Were you buying DVDs in 1997? There were quite a few back then close to the $30 mark in the US. You have to keep in mind this is early in the formats life and things are going to cost more for the early adopters. It is always the way.

You also have to account for the fact that essentially all of the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD buys you get are the equivalent of special edition versions of the films you're buying.

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

There was no battle to begin with really. IMO HD DVD were released too late. It's like the battle between xbox and ps2. PS2 had been out for several years before Xbox came about and xbox lost due to not many titles being available.

HD DVD has a fair amount but after looking at the 2008 Blu-Ray launch titles...HD DVD have no fight in them

The only people going for HD DVD's are those who can't afford a PS3 or already own HD DVD's and DVD's so they don't want to cash out on the Blu-rays.

Not to mention they are around the same price as normal DVD's...so a good move in that sector for both formats.

To be honest I was against Blu-ray and the PS3 since I already have most the movies they are putting out for launch as normal DVD's but after experiencing Apocalypto on a 40" TV 1080p I will be buying a PS3 when I get paid this month (no it has nothing to do with the constant nagging from my friends to get a PS3 to play them at a few games >_<)

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

Microsoft only created HD-DVD to oppose Sony in the hope that it would destroy the physical media format, leaving the way clear to introduce downloadable media at a costly price[/fact]

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

Microsoft didnt create HD-DVD, they only support the format...

And why they still do I have no idea. HD-DVD has pretty much lost the war now.

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

I don't think there was ever a war to begin with. It sort of went "HD-DVD announced...HD-DVD releases several titles...Blu-Ray announced...Blu-ray releases one title and stomps HD-DVD 6ft under ground...HD-DVD acts like terminator and will not take defeat as an answer and claws at whatever it has left...Blu-Ray steals more support and continues to stomp a mudhole into HD-DVD"

Yup pretty much sums it up

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

Toshiba created the bulk of the technology behind HD-DVD.

As for Microsoft I can only imagine it has something to do with a lack of desire to support Blu-ray. Doesn't affect them either way though I can't imagine why. Unless they have some odd grudge again Sony. Which makes very little sense considering they only compete in one market.
