re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

Eh, I don't really see a quality difference between the two. The only other thing I'm not too fond of, is that there isn't any sort of burning device for Blu-Ray. I had to install a Blu-Ray system at this guy's house, and he wants to burn his security camera imput onto Blu-Ray discs. We obviously can't do that yet, so he was kinda pissed...

You're clearly not looking hard enough then.

Wouldnt it be easier and cheaper just to save it to a big hard drive? Blank single layer BD disks are like $25 EACH!. Thats about a dollar a gigabyte. You can get a 400GB hard drive for about $85.

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

Cheaper maybe, but not really any easier. BD provides an easy way to change the disk and log dates and times. If you record to a HDD when an incident happens then you are still going to need a DVD burner or a jump drive or something to copy the video to for transport. On the ohter hand you don't have to remember to change the disk every day.

Thats what we ended up having to do. Its a solid hard drive, but he wanted Blu-Ray discs and we weren't able to find them in our warehouse. Meh.

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

Just a question, can you play the normal, old DVDs on a blu-ray dvd player? Or do you have to replace your entire film collection with blu-ray discs? Already had to do that once when everything changed to DVDs!

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

Nearly all if not all Blu-ray players also play DVDs. On top of that they upscale as well so you get HD quality out of them. Just not quite as good as Blu-ray offers. So no you won't have to replace your collection.

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

That's excellent, thanks a lot. Although there still is the temptation to replace some of the DVDs with blu-ray just to get the better quality out of them! Especially on action films and stuff. Anyone got money to burn and doing this?

Believe me, I've seen upscaled DVDs and Blu-Rays. There is a difference but the money isn't worth the difference IMO.

To that I say: BULLOCKS! Upscaled DVDs are nowhere near Blu-ray quality and it's damn sure worth the difference. Anyone in doubt watch a scene on DVD, then switch to a BD and watch the same scene.

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

Eh, I would say if you have the money to upgrade and it isn't going to hurt your budget in any major way to do it then go for it. But it isn't something I would rush out and get right now just to have it.

Don't get me wrong I love my PS3. It is without question probably the best BD player on the market right now too. But again it isn't like the difference is so spectacular that you have to get one as soon as possible. We are still very much in the early adoption phase and the players will only get better from here on in. They are still finishing up BD profile 2.0 with includes BD live. And not all of the old players will be able to update to profile 2.0 which means some profile 1.0 and 1.1 BD players will become obsolete. If you're going to by anything other than the PS3 for Blu-ray make sure it can be upgraded via an ethernet connection.

What is BD profile 2.0, and BD live?

Still trying to find info on profile 2.0 but BD live is basically adding interactive online content to the movies that will come out under profile 2.0. Not sure what else profile 2.0 adds though.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts on it. Man I love it when people are on the same page and better at organizing their thoughts.

Common (and good) knowledge: it's always best to wait on new technologies to develop before buying them. That applies to everything in technology.

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

If you are considering upgrading but have original DVD's in your collection but want to watch them with Blu-ray quality then do what I am going to do at the end of this month.

Join Lovefilm or Amazon and rent them out. I see no point in buying the same film just for better quality to keep when I already have the film, probably watched it recently or still remember the film when all I have to do is rent the film which is cheaper (and able to keep it as long as I want until I want another film to watch) then watch the film and send it back etc.
