Eh, I would say if you have the money to upgrade and it isn't going to hurt your budget in any major way to do it then go for it. But it isn't something I would rush out and get right now just to have it.

Yeah I agree with that. I was one of the idiots that jumped on the DVD bandwagon too soon. I was just as happy with my VCR. I did the same thing with the CD player too, when cassettes were just fine. The difference is not something to rush out and get right now and for that matter in the future.

It is probably best to wait to see what happens. Besides, waiting long enough to upgrade might be cheaper compared to doing it right now. Its not the end of the world to wait.

Don't they have those DVD players that is all-in-one Blu-Ray and HD-DVD player? Kind of like they do with a DVD and VHS combined?

The stand alone unit has only one disc drive, but it can read both Blu-Ray and HD DVDs. They're extremely expensive though.

Yea, and hardly worth it when HD-DVD is clearly so close to the brink of failure. I'm actually really glad that Warner made such a decisive move though. I was very close to buying an HD-DVD player to get my hands on the movies I was missing out on because of Paramount's deal. Now it is just a waiting game.

Agreed, the prices will go down over time for Blu-Ray discs and players, and after a while, those movies that aren't on Blu-Ray now will surely be on Blu-Ray later.

To me though, Blu-Ray seems a little more sharper than an HD-DVD. I have no clue though.

Not according to Sound and Vision. The mastering on some discs can vary a lot between formats for dual releases.

On another note about HD-DVD... looks like Porn is no longer exclusive on HD-DVD but it's also on Blueray now.

That was possibly the ONLY thing that could keep HD-DVD from sinking, but we'll see as time will tell. But Warner's and Digital Playground's moves makes this a HUGE blow to HD-DVD.

Personally I say wait it out another 1.5 years. Players are affordable now and HD-DVD is aggressively slashing prices with promo packs. (eg: 300 bucks for 5 movies and the player)

Yea, that's called desperation. Warner Bros pretty much decided the outcome of this war the moment they announced their exclusivity. They only have two major studios backing them. Even the porn industry wouldn't be enough to save them when Blu-ray holds 70% of the home video market. That's not just a huge blow that's a death neal. All that's left now is time.

It would take a major shift in another company switching sides to bring back enough balance to the market to even hope to save HD-DVD now. That or Blu-ray would have to suffer a tremendous blow and cripple consumer trust. The only people that would even consider buying an HD-DVD player right now are those that aren't informed. And most people making a large purchase like this aren't going to go in uninformed.

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

Desperation, yes... absolute impeding failure... I'm not so sure.

I think the main reason Blueray is outselling is because of Disney, honestly. Both formats are comparably nearly equivalent in quality but the Warner deal is huge of course.

I think HD-DVD still got some things we've yet to see. If they're really strapped for cash then I say 2 years. Now as for a avid adult movie buyer I don't think HD-DVD is that prevalent amongst their customer base. I'm sure their DVDs are still outselling their HD discs.

Even at this point with such a huge market share I still can't justify buying either formats yet since I still think HD-DVD, with backing from M$ et al can really pull it through.

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

Disny is only part of the reason Blu-ray is winning. And Microsoft isn't going to save HD-DVD if they don't have the movies. Consider this:

Blu-ray Exclusive Major Studios
- Disney
- Fox
- MGM
- New Line Cinema
- Sony
- Warner Bros

HD-DVD Exclusive Major Studios
-Paramount
-Universal

Blu-ray has over 70% of the market. Paramount is only exclusive until they end of the year. And even then apparently there is a clause in their contract that give them an out if Warner pulls out the HD-DVD support. They haven't enacted that clause yet but they could at any time. And even if they don't it is unlikely they will continue to support HD-DVD exclusively after the end of the year. Worse they might not support it at all.

It is not just that the Warner deal is huge. It is a major blow. And likely to shift early adopters to support Blu-ray all the more. You can have Microsoft and Toshiba and all the hardware manufactures you want supporting it. But without the software you've got nothing. As I said it would take something catastrophic to derail Blu-ray now. There just isn't much of a fight left here. I say around the end of the year we will see HD-DVD starting to fold.

re: HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray

A rather misinformed post. HD DVD came first and was the most marketed in the beginning, until Blu-Ray was introduced. HD is from Microsoft and Blu-Ray is from Sony. Blu-Ray boasts a higher storage capacity among other things, and over time, has slowly climbed its way up the popularity ladder, leaving HD-DVD behind.
