PokéFiction Manual

Hello and Welcome to the Forum!

First things first, I want to explain how and why this forum is here. A few members branched off the Role Play threads and started coming up with the idea to make their own stories called Fan-Fictions. At the same time some members took their graphic making talent and put it to use in making their own Comics. Eventually these fictional creations started overrunning the main forum, however I felt they held merit and I didn’t want to simply close them all down. The concept to have another forum for members to have their own community for these pieces popped into my mind one day, and after a discussion with Redemption, the forum was made, and here we are.

Rules

Now I’m not going to lay down a specific set of rules for the forum, because frankly I really don’t think we need one. For starters I expect you all to obviously follow the Main Forum Rules. I do feel however, that there are a few certain things that are of the utmost importance while posting here:

  • Comment constructively; posts like “Awesome!”, “Lolz!” or “Post the next chapter already!” are not constructive posts.
  • Do not be rude, malicious towards another member because they’re work may be sub-par in your eyes.
  • Do not Bump threads; only post if you have something insightful/useful to say.
  • Do not react improperly by retorting to someone, simply use the Report button if you feel I need to look at it.
  • Do not use vulgar or sexual language to an extreme extent; I understand some situations you may need to express emotion but keep it at a minimum.

As you can see these really aren't even rules, but common sense you should use when posting. However I realize that sometimes common sense does go out the window so this is here as a reminder.

    Types of PokéFiction

Now you should know what types of creative work this forum is meant for:

  • Comic
  • FanFiction
  • RolePlay
  • Gallery

Each of the above types of PokéFiction will be listed below with a brief description of what they are and some tips to help you get started and make your PokéFiction successful.

Now identifying what type of PokéFiction a thread is will be easy. All you have to do is to look at the caption of each thread. Each type will have the captions pictured in these example PokéFiction:

    Comic:

    FanFiction:
    RolePlay:

    Comic

    Comic

Comics are essentially graphics. They tell a story through visuals and limited speech. Composed of panels, the story's order shifts from left to right and top to bottom in most instances. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind while making a Comic:

  • Keep your graphics in high formats like .png or .gif.
  • Don’t re-size too many times, it will distort the graphic and reduce the quality of your Comic.
  • Try to be consistent with your panels; don’t make one issue composed of 4 panels, while the next has 8.
  • Try to make sure your story flows from panel to panel, and issue to issue.
  • Try to keep an index of your issues for your Comic in the first post of the thread so new readers can easily located them.
  • Spell Check your speech bubbles before adding them to your panels; even though its a Comic, it should still have some semblance of eloquence.

    FanFiction

    FanFiction

This is a way of incorporating your own thoughts and ideas about the series, and spinning them off to make your own story. These stories can contain fictional people and places or simply use those from the actual franchise. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind while making a FanFiction:

  • Make sure to use the spell check feature, this is of the utmost importance.
  • Be sure to make sure your sentences are grammatically correct.
  • Plan out your chapters before you right; make sure the story flows nicely.
  • Try and make your chapters a few paragraphs long, otherwise the reader will never be able to sink their teeth into your story.
  • Don’t give up if you aren’t getting many comments; keep it up and you’ll garner some attention.
  • Try to keep an index of your chapters in your first post, as it allows easy navigation for readers catching on late to find each part of your story.

    RolePlay

    RolePlay

RolePlay threads are where several members join together to write a fictional story. One member will typically start it off and others will join in with their own fictional characters. Each member takes a turn writing and continuing the story, and slowly, piece by piece, the participants will produce a finished fictional story; almost a community FanFiction of sorts. However RolePlay threads don’t necessarily ever have a conclusive “finish” to them. Sometimes the participants just grow tired and bored of the RolePlay and choose to let it die. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind while participating in a RolePlay:

  • Just like in FanFictions, make sure to use the spell check feature.
  • Grammar yet again is of the utmost importance here; make sure your sentences are worded properly.
  • Follow the rules of the RolePlay; sometimes they require you to type your submissions to a certain length.
  • Try to be “all business” in these threads; removing any unnecessary images or chatter is preferred.
  • Proper punctuation should be a given, but with RolePlays sometimes quotation marks get lost in the mix; do remember to use them.
  • Make sure not to go out to the extreme in your submission; keep your involvement within reason and not unrealistic measures.
  • When you want to talk to another member outside of the RolePlay use “OOC:” (Out of Content) at the beginning of your post when you wish to say something to another participant.

    Gallery

    Gallery

These types of threads come in multiple forms. Members may make their own Pokemon or their own Trainer Cards. Each of these graphic forms have their own threads appropriately called Sprites Gallery and Trainer Card Gallery. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind while participating in a Gallery:

  • Constructive criticism is again a must.
  • Do not put down members if you feel their work isn't up to your standards; instead give them advice and help.
  • Avoid over resizing your images; try to resize something as few times as possible.
  • Do not call someone out for "stealing" your work and calling it their own unless you have sufficient evidence; Report the post if you do.
  • Do not constantly bump your work asking for comments; asking once in a while is fine, just don't overdue it.
  • Do not post multiple rows or columns of sprites, instead put them on one large white background image scattered around so the image loads quicker.
