She kept her feet in the boiling water, it bubbled comfortably, but Piplup disliked it so jumped onto Dawn's lap. She placed her hands behind her back and tipped her head back, knowing what to expect. "You froze the lake right?" Paul blocked the sunlight above with his head, though still some made her squint. She could still see his amused smirk. "Well done." She eventually felt her feet as they were warming up. "Well Weavile can't aim well. I wanted it to go over the other side of the pool." She looked over. There was ice there, starting to melt due to the heat of the water. "It is over there." She said plainly, looking back upwards to him, observing his reaction. "Still got you didn't it?" "Well yeah but..." "- Then it wasn't aimed." She sighed, "it seems you aim too high." "I like to push myself." He said bluntly, looking over at the remaining ice. "Maybe your pokemon don't." He didn't reply, for once he had no comeback. "Paul?" She asked quietly. He 'hmmed as a sign of recognition, still concentrating on the ice trickling down to the lake. "Why do you train the way you do?" He snapped quickly, "I don't want to talk about it." She twisted her body slowly and carefully. "Sorry..." She said sarcastically. She remembered her Mother's wise words; Everyone deserves a chance, whether it's a first chance or second... She smiled at the thought, then grabbed his trouser leg. "Come and sit down, I'm uncomfortable with you above me." He rolled his eyes and sat on the rock they had battled by before. "So where's your friends then?" "We're not friends at the moment. I had an argument with Ash and I know who Brock would choose if it were him and me to choose from." Paul smirked, "friends do nothing but slow you down." Although it seemed nasty, the way he said it wasn't meant in a nasty way. She pondered over it for a second. "What do you mean?" No reply, Paul suddenly looked worried. "Paul?" She waved her hand in front of his face. He wafted it away and stood up, taking another glance at the completely melted Ice. He started walking away without a word. "Where you goin'?" He stopped and looked over his shoulder, "for a walk." She nodded and looked back to the rippling waters, "bye then." He nodded slightly, she noticed he used gestures a lot more than words, as if he used to be silenced a lot. It reminded her of an old friend at the pokeschool, she was an elective mute. The only person she would speak to was Dawn. She tilted her head thoughtfully, and began to stroke Piplup. Daydreaming of the good ol' days...
She wondered of what to do next and sighed. "Plup?" She smiled at her friend. "You don't slow me down, you quicken the pace!" "Lup?" It said, not understanding. Dawn giggled to herself. "What can we do now? I'm not going back to say sorry. I was the one who was right!" "Pipluplup." She nodded with her hands on her hips. She looked over the lake and spotted a distant Paul walking away. "He's obviously got somewhere to go." "Piiip." "Let's follow, he might be heading to a town." She said, feeling very accomplished she had thought of something so great. "Pip-piplipup!" It said excitedly. She stood up, holding her Piplup tightly like a hug. Her feet suddenly felt the cold, so she looked to Piplup. "Let's stay here a while longer." They both smiled to each other and Piplup dived in.
They eventually arrived in the town Paul had unconsciously lead them to, the pair walked happily around, looking around at the cute buildings. Whilst looking up, Piplup shook trying to get her attention, but she ended up clashing into someone instead. "I'm so sorry. Dawn!?" She had one arm around Piplup and the other on her head, she opened one eye and lifted her head. "Zoey!" She smiled. She held out her arm and Dawn gratefully took it. "You here for the contest too!?" Dawn smiled, "don't you know it!" She lied, it wasn't blatant, so Zoey continued. "Cool. Err... Where are the other two and Pikachu?" Dawn looked down sadly, she didn't really want to talk about it again. "Ah." Zoey said quickly. "Well we'll go together, 'kay?" Dawn nodded, her eyes glistened in the sun, though she squinted a split second after. They walked through the town, talking about recent events such as their past contests. Dawn suddenly yelled, "hey Paul!" Zoey turned, then gave a friendly smile, which wasn't returned. Paul looked reluctant to join them, but Dawn had already walked over. "What you doing here?" She asked, still remembering her mother's words. He smirked his usual smirk which meant something sharp was about to comeback; "wondering what you're doing, you?" She giggled nervously, tapping her feet trying to release anger a different way. The fact that she had been outsmarted angered her. Zoey had already noticed this. "We're going to the contest. I take it you're not another rival of Dawn's?" "No. We just know each other." He said in his monotone, plain, unamused voice. "Uh-huh." Dawn agreed, Zoey repeated what she had said, but in a different tone. "Why don't you try contests?" "Yeah! That would be funny!" Dawn snorted sarcastically. Paul snickered, "they're pointless." Both Dawn and Zoey gasped, "only because he's afraid we would beat him." Paul just smirked, deciding not to give them the satisfaction. "Well see you around Paul." Dawn smiled, Zoey added on; "wish us luck." He walked in the other direction, sighing from the waste of time.
"And now! Up last but one is Dawn! What can she show us that we haven't seen already!?" She ran on in her usual pink dress, smiling and waving happily, in her comfort zone. "Ambipom! Spotlight!" Several hearts escaped the seal, and Dawn planned on using them. "Push them together with Double hit!" It smacked the hearts to form one big one then jumped on top of it, waving Cooley. "Double team!" Many Ambipom flew around landing in a circle around the heart, the original stayed on top. "Furyswipes on the floor!" "Wow! The copies of Ambipom are doing all the work! Whilst the real one sits on it's falling heart! I think Dawn has done this on purpose!" "Swift into the heart! And then Focus Punch!" "Would you look at the speed on that!? Just like it's name, the swift attack can barely be seen! And what's this last attack going to do!?" The heart cut open by many stars was destroyed by the massive punch. Red dust was scattered everywhere and tiny gold stars twinkled between it. When it had risen, Dawn stood with Ambipom by her side, both waving. "All I can say is wow!" "Uh- Err... Remarkable!" "What a beautiful unique way to show off so many moves! I speechless!" Dawn smiled, and the two walked off hand in hand.
"That was amazing! How did you think of that!?" Zoey looked shocked, but in a pleased way. People gathered her, waiting for her secret. "Err... I followed my feelings, I guess..." She nodded, then smiled, "the most beautiful sights come from within." She concluded, quoting her wise mother's words. Only just realising what this one meant.
Many people talked to her due to her amazing appeal, she was distracted during the last appeal, which she usually watched for competition reasons. Little did she know, there was a last minute entry, far better than many other contestants. "And now for the results of the first round! Only four may go through to the next round! This list shows the order they have come by. They shall then be shuffled for the next stage!" The beeps sounded and people stopped talking and glanced at the television. Dawn. Zoey. A boy named Dominic. "Paul!?" She yelled, which was interrupted by a snort. "I came to prove you wrong." He smirked. She sucked in anger, but remembered her Mother's calm words once more. She wasn't sure how many more times it would work. "Well, you did well to get to the last four!" "Only just, Torterra didn't do as well as I'd planned..." She gasped, "all you can ask is for their best!" "What if I don't want their best!? I want more than their best, I want the best." This time even her mother knew her words wouldn't stop her. "What's wrong with you!? You're sick! Your pokemon crave your approval because it's rare, if that! I'd say it was non-existent!" "How dare you insult my way of training! I work hard so why shouldn't my pokemon!" "They do!" She shrieked, by this point people began to turn around. "What do they have to prove for it!? 4th place? Even you don't settle for anything less than 1st, so why do you think I should!?" She was taken back by his anger, never had he replied so harshly, "because I love my pokemon, there's a difference." He glared at her, "love is what makes things hurt when they let you down." He sneered. "Theres a fine line between gyms and contests. Gyms are all about strength, and don't get me wrong, you are a genius at that, but Contests are about appeals, and how pokemon and trainer work together. That's why I'm determined to win. To prove you wrong." Zoey finally approached, "come on we're up. Let's see your best." Dawn smiled as they walked towards the exit with their arms hooked. She kept her head hung low, and felt like she was going to cry, unable to distinguish whether it was for his poor pokemon, or for him.
