I haven't played any of the games since AOD. Will I be able understand everything that happens in the game, or will I need to go back to the previous games in order for this to make sense?

If I'm not mistaken, this game takes place after the events of Tomb Raider: Legend, which was a cliffhanger. There will be some confusing things in this game, if you haven't played Legend, than again, I think there are some things that comeback from even earlier in the series. I'd recommend at least getting legend before playing.
