On this chapter in story mode the task is to make friends with the other castaways, they where all in the "shaded lagoon" where i served food however i had to save and exit. When I returned they are no where to be found anywhere on the island...

I believe what the other poster meant was have you tried to click on the portal and choose to Move out? Before you do any of that, take what you want, the steamer trunk and anything else that you might want from the house. I'd leave the bed and stuff there, just if you bought anything while being there. Take that and put it in the inventory.
Hope that helped and it's not too late. Maybe you've deleted that game by now. In case you haven't that's the option that I'd try, or go back to the Castaway beach then go back to the shady lagoon, maybe travel to the market and the valley harbor.
