Not So Incredible

Oh man. What might have been. This game had all the potential in the world of being a Hulk fan's wet dream. Next Gen graphics, actual Manhattan setting, and the foundation for an awesome game already laid out from Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.

Hulk looks amazing, as do all of the other secret costumes available to you to play as. But once you get over the cool factor and see a couple zoom ins, the sad truth that this game has horrible gameplay is overwhelming.

The framerate slows down a ton at times, and currently Im on lockup number four during intense missions with multiple enemies chasing me.

Choppy framerate issues aside, the combat system has been completely aborted. All of the sweet combos and moves that were in Ultimate destruction are non existent here. You get a vanilla combo system of about four hits with hand to hand. Grabbing your enemy performs a few hits and then a throw.

No weaponizations return save for the steel fists. Now, I havent finished the story, but Ive looked at all the upgrades on the list and nowhere do I see the ability to do any sort of slams to enemy soldiers or hulkbuster units.

So no side slams or gamma bombs off the top of a high building. THAT SUCKS.

No ripping apart a rocket launcher and throwing the missiles. No Cyclone skyjack where you grab a chopper and ride it into a fiery crash. No smashing a bus into a shield and surfing it down the street. No shockwave smash repeater where you just pound the ground constantly causing a massive shockwave to branch out and take out your enemies.

Yes friends, everything that was cool about ultimate destruction's combat system has been left out. This game is very tedious, and very very annoying.

The game forces you to complete "feats" before a upgrade is given to you. You cant just build up smash points like before and buy what you want. No, you have to complete these tedious tasks that are mostly repetetive and time consuming, and at the end of each is usually an objective that must be completed in one of the story missions. So the game not only decides what upgrade you get, but they also force you to play the main story to get it as well.

Sandbox style games are great because they DONT force the player into playing the main story. Had these feats been something that could have been done in free roam, I might have been less irritated.

However, when it takes me 25 minutes to complete enough feats just to learn how to do something so simple as sprint, thats freaking stupid. Hell, Im about four hours into the game and Ive just now learned how to swing a pole weapon more than a single time. I learned how to do a 3 hit combo. WOW. I finally got to the part in the story arc that allowed me to complete that story objective, and now I can actually swing a pole in a combination of up to 3 hits. What the hell kind of upgrade is that??

Ok, heres the deal. Imagine everything that was good about ultimate destruction and throw it away. Make the graphics outstanding, but with so much crap happening at once that the framerate drops so low youre risking a lockup, throw in a few flashy extra costumes, and base it in Manhattan and youve got The Incredible Hulk game.

Good:

Hulk looks amazing, as do the extra costumes.

EVERY SINGLE BUILDING is destructible. Level an entire neighborhood to get an achievement.

2 new supers. Once you unlock them after a few hours that is. One is the ability to completely regenerate all your health for 4 rage blocks, which is cool, and the other is the ability to rampage, causing you to do triple damage for a short amount of time. Ground smash and sonic clap from UD remain, but on the ground only. Cant do em from the air.

Collectibles such as comic covers, gamma cannisters and fury cannisters have SOUND, so that when looking for them you can actually hear them and know one is close. Makes the search much more fun.

BAD:

Weaponizations are gone. Steel fist and turning a tank into a mace are the only two ive seen so far, and its just not nearly as much fun.

Combos are vanilla, repetetive and mind numbingly boring. Theres only so many times you can press X X charge Y, Charge Y before you get bored to tears.

Feats required to unlock upgrades are tedious and boring. Defeat 250 enemies with the same boring ass combo. Destroy 100 buildings. Accumulate 1 full hour of being airborne. land 2500 melee attacks. smash 10,000 things. score 1 million points. This crap takes forever to do and the reward is hardly worth the trouble.

Complete and total lack of any type of slam move once you grab an enemy. Just throws. No slam, no gamma bomb. BS.

No riding aircraft into a crash. Just punch them once and they go down. Yawn.

Same style of mission introduction as UD had, a little bit of voiceover to tell the basic object of the mission, very few cutscenes. Cheap and easy way out on presentation here.

"Unstoppable Movement" is gone. No more running grab, no running attacks, and sometimes even a small ass little car can slow you down when you sprint into it.

Hulk is slow when using cars to smash things with. In UD you could just go off and bash the hell out of things repeatedly, but in this game everything seems so slow.

When the first strike team comes, Hulk is encouraged to "escape to the subway" to clear the threat levels. No more jump points or markers, this time its the subway that is used for travel points around the play area.

No air supers. Air sonic clap was amazing last game, but now its gone. No elbow drop from the building, no air ground smash, just stay on the ground and do the ground based version. A real drag.

Bottom line here guys is this. The game sucks. If you have a copy of Ultimate destruction, continue to play that game which showcases the green goliath in all his glory. Dont waste your time or your money on this. Only the most HARDCORE of Hulk fan need give this game a second glance.

Everything that was good about Ultimate Destruction got discarded it seems. Whatever development team Sega had working on this pile should have to issue a public apology for this travesty.

I have to agree with you. So many cool things from UD, lost thanks to Sega. I'm glad I rented this instead of buying it. I just hope that Sega will let go of trying to make Marvel comic based video games, for both our sakes.

re: Not So Incredible

yeah its pretty lame TBH. i discovered that for me it only freezes when im using an alternate costume, but its fine if i just use the default IH skin.

i didnt play UD, but i can tell that Hulk isnt as powerful as you would think he should be. he should be able to level 4 or 5 buildings with 1 single charged up Thunder Clap, yet he cant as the shockwave isnt that big.

also, damage should be increased due to gravity whenever he is performing a slam move from any surface that he changes to a lower elevation for the landing, i.e. jumping off a building and pounding the ground. if i jump off the Empire State Building and perform a fully charged Rage ground slam (holding down Y), i want to make the ground below me shake for at least 5 seconds and i want to see a HUGE crater in the ground. that wouldnt be very hard to do if they had spent longer on the game rather than rushing it out.

re: Not So Incredible

Sad, but true. While being able to destroy all buildings is a plus, the lack of any interesting or unique moves makes the gameplay a grind after a few hours. The billboards were kind of cool, even if every window looks the same. Hulk looks absolutely awesome, but all the people on the streets of Manhattan break down into about 5 or 6 different types. With lame dialogue and reactions to you. I HAD to buy it because I love the Hulk, and UD was a great game, but this one just falls short for me. Too bad, because it had the potential to be..... well..... Incredible.

It's a league game, Smokey.
