Clockwork Dragon

re: Game profile information |

A synopsis of the game.
Back in the days of yore, when Sony's PlayStation, Nintendo's N64 and Sega's Saturn battled it out, the latter of the three suffered badly, despite having some gems that would have drawn in the punters under different circumstances. The Panzer Dragoon series squeezed in amongst these special examples, providing on-rails blasting action that harked back to the days of Sega's Afterburner (although obviously in a totally different setting and a big chuffing dragon rather than a fighter jet). The follow-up, the RPG inspired Panzer Dragoon Saga, was far removed from the original shooting genre, but still managed to be perhaps the best example of the series. Now it's Xbox's turn to get a slice of the Dragoon pie, taking the series back to its blasting roots. Set a good few decades after the original trilogy, the game follows a young woman called Orta who has been held prisoner by a new and dangerous empire that has recently arisen. However, having been freed by a dragon, she then sets off presumably to help the Resistance movement against the Empire. There are ten levels to take to the skies and battle in, where you control Orta's dragon, shooting enemies and destroying property. There are also huge bosses to take on, multiple routes to go through and NPC's to interact with. Things aren't as simple as they first seem, though, as there's plenty more here than meets the flying lizard's eye. Your dragon is equipped with a deadly berserk mode that acts like a smart bomb, dispatching all foes on screen. Most impressively, your animal can morph into different variations of its original form, effectively letting you customise you fighting style to fit with the way you play. There are a total of three initial forms, the boosting various attributes of your steed to make it faster, stronger, better without the need for Steve Rogers type bionic implants. The real show-stealer of Panzer Dragoon Orta is the graphics, which are amazing. There's astonishing detail within the game, with some sublime lighting effects, smooth framerate and animation and luscious environments that show off a pleasant diversity that ranges from sweeping forests to a teaming city. It all looks very fluid and for those looking for next generation eye-candy in their shoot 'em ups, it's a veritable Ben and Jerry's Haagen Daz combo feast. Sweet. Combined with a host of extras such as unlockable sub-quests that let players experience the story from the Empire's perspective, Panzer Dragoon Orta seems like a scrolling blaster fans' fully cocked and loaded gun, albeit with a large fire-breathing scaly thing instead of a small metallic shooter. Expect more information and a full review to eventually 'dragoon' into Games Domain later this year. Hows that for some info? ~CD~ ------------------- Not just another FF game. | |
