On the cover of the game it said that it was based on the true story. Is this really true. i tried to look it up on the internet and no luck.

from what i know is that the mansion is real. it is located somewhere in Japan. the rituals are real too, they were certian religious things that went on at that mansion many years ago. thats all that i know about the true nature of the game, i've been looking myself to find the total story to it all. but a friend of mine said that in order to truely understand all of what happened you would have to be highly into Japanese religious history shintoish.

True Story? I read from the developer that the "Truth" was more to terrify the player, and build suspense before getting into the game. The rituals of torture were real, the mansion is not. well not in the fact that it was used for evil. Its funny that Fatal Frame 2 is using the same MO. It states "based on a true story". I feel Amityville is closer to the truth than the story behind Fatal Frame.

*sigh*
The game is *NOT* based on a true story. The rituals did NOT happen..there is no mansion where two psychic teenagers got lost in. What the game is 'based' on (and I use the word based loosely) are two Japanese urban legends/ghost stories. When the game was originally released in Japan, Tecmo never used the tagline 'based on a true story'. They mainly used it in the US to boost profit sales and interest in the game. http://www.cameraslens.com/himuro.html http://www.cameraslens.com/ffrituals.html Shinto religion btw considers blood and fore to be a defilement. While their are stories of hitobashira rituals (ie human sacrifice) there is very little archeological evidence they exist (where in China there is evidence). Hitobashira rituals also usually involved water or fire, which are seen as purifying elements in Shinto. Soo..yeah..no tearing people limb from limb in Shinto, especially near a shrine or temple. Why it's in the game? Think of it as a scare factor, similar to having a blood soaked Christian altar or something similar to that effect. | |
